Where to eat...or not! / Re: Gioma Taverna
« on: October 02, 2012, 09:39:07 PM »
Have visited Plakias many times over the past ~20 years, and every year since 2002, yet managed to miss Gio Ma completely until the last couple of years. The food is both excellent and plentiful.

My favourite is the grilled Octopus, closely followed by red mullet, but possibly not everyone's thing!

The place retains a genuine feel, the staff are attentive and, I think, attentive without being intrusive. The spot is wonderful, nicely sheltered from the wind but with wonderful sunset views.

Definitely in our top three and possibly tops!

Never really 'got' the various re-vamps, liked it when it was relatively basic in the mid 90s. Shame really, nice place once and probably still could be.

Plakias / Re: How is business in Plakias?

Ntice that things in general are a little quieter, since 08, in fact. Let's hope that the current Euro problems sort themselves out (can't count on most politicians, after all!!).

Plakias / Re: First timer to Plakias 26th June :-)

Was taken to Plakias by 'mistake' in 94 (then taken to Amoudara....), went back in '95, then every year since '02, calculate that I've spent 1% of my life in Plakias now.

Travel the world on business (just back from S America for second time this year), and holiday elsewhere at least once a year, but I really LOVE Plakias and environs. Wouldn't miss it for anything. Might seem boring going bck to the same place each year but Plakias has everything that I look for.

Cheers, Richard

Plakias / The wind!

Well, we've never had force 8 but it has been pretty gusty on occasions. Sandblasting can be a problem on the long Plakias beach (can't remember name) but Souda suffers much less in this respect. We tend to visit either in May or September and wind tends not to be a problem, perhaps it's worse over the summer? Don't know.

Our second visit, many years ago, was late in June, however, and on the couple of days that the fairly steady breeze stopped, the heat became unpleasant.

Whatever, we booked our own flight/accommodation et.c. this year rather than using an agent, to allow us to stay for 10 days, and we will certainly do this again next year, staying at Skinos once more. Lovely spot.

All the best, Richard

Where to eat...or not! / Favourite Eateries - 2009

Hello,

Taken to Plakias by mistake in 1994, what a stroke of luck! Have been there many times since; 1995 and then every year since 2002, hope to be there in a couple of weeks' time.

Can't really remember a very disappointing meal in Plakias. My favourites (an almost comprehensive list of Plakian tavernas!);

Siroko: fish, fish, and more fish but very good daily specials/meats

Lysseos: v. popular, arrive early!

Harakas: great outdoor 'barbecue'

Christos: lovely spot beneath the trees, on but above the beach; excellent for lunch

Sofia: all good stuff but great meat casseroles. Try your Greek here. Even my pathetic efforts met with some approval!

XXXX: can't remember name, but hidden behind Alianthos Beach Hotel and worth mentioning; facing away from beach by mini-roundabout, hotel on left, walk past hotel, follow road round to left, taverna on right. Really nice people, lovely food/surroundings. Again, try your Greek here.

Mousses; used to enjoy lunch here, was very good, haven't been in recent years, no particular reason, worth a try.

Kri Kri; very good for quick bites at lunch-time.

A couple whose names I can't remember but definitely worth a mention:

The fish taverna adjoined to Christos, to thw western side, Souda Bay direction

The fish taverna to the south of Sirocco (next-door but one?), towards the harbour

The bakery close to Ostraco Bar et al. sells very good pastries et.c.

All are friendly, and genuinely so in my opinion. This lot can easily keep us happy for a fortnight's hols, we usually go somewhere different each year also but I never really tire of Plakias.

All the best, Richard

Gossip / How did you first find Plakias?
« on: September 23, 2007, 03:27:46 PM »
Hi Barny,

After my first Greek holiday on the island of Aegina in '93 I immediately booked one for '94, at the Albatross Apartments in a place called Amoudara.

Checked location on a map before we left, looked to be about 15 mins from Heraklion. After about an hour in the taxi I was getting concerned but assumed I'd misread the map. To cut a long story short, we were dropped off at the Albatross Studios in Plakias, the only problem being there was somebody else in 'our' room!

Walked into the village and found the holiday rep., who organised a taxi back to Amoudara, which is a noisy suburb of Heraklion which happens to have a beach. This was a huge disappointment after seeing Plakias briefly, but I've been back to Plakias many times since. This Albatross was a lucky one for us!!

Cheers,

Richard
