Well, we will be back in September, for a little longer than in May (a last minute decision to go with Olympic, that I really regret, see rant elsewhere on this site!).

Perhaps there will be time this time after all. Can't wait either way!

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Lysseos
« on: July 10, 2013, 09:43:32 PM »
I have also 'tried' to make Lysseos a favourite, having had it highly recommended by regulars that pre-date my firt visit to Plakis in the mid-90s, but I can't rave about it. The food is good, but always leaves me thinking that there was something that wasn't quite right.

Kleftiko is an old favourite of mine and while it was good, the local Greek resstaurant in the village that I used to live in in the UK made a better one. I like quite highly spiced food and perhaps this is where thing go wrong, for me at least. Not stupidly hot curries, but loads of flavour. But, given Kleftiko's origins perhaps this is how it really should taste.

I suspect that this is merely a case of my liking for Plakias leading to too-high expectations, but all the same... I could certainly recommend Lysseos, all the same, and given the lack of seating after 19:00, I doubt that I would need to.

If this is the one behind Alianthos Gardens/Beach, near the bakery, the taverna that my wife and I call 'round the back', then we had happy experiences here 2010/11.

The service was a little slow but very, very friendly - perhaps more so than average in Plakias - and the food was certainly up to the standards that I'd expect; reasonably priced, too. The grilled meat was lovely, as were the staff.

The only reason we didn't visit this year was too much choice and too little time. We are quite sentimental about where we eat and we simply didn't discover this place until we'd been visiting Plakias for a number of years.

Where to stay / Re: Good hotels?

Stayed at Stella in 2003, haven't been back since but not for negative reasons, just chose to do things differently. Very good breakfast, rooms fine, nice people too. Would be happyto stay there again.

Is this place next to Tasomanolis, 'round the corner' past Gio Ma?

Agree re sense of humour and lovely spot, but be careful how much you order.

The LOVELY garlic bread is almost a meal in itself and helpings of everything else are massive, in my experience. I simply couldn't finish lunch (chicken souvlaki) earlier in the week.

Fantastic value for money, genuinely nice people and lovely food!

Holiday Companies / Re: Olympic 2013 Holidays
« on: June 01, 2013, 08:09:19 PM »
Wouldn't trust Olympic again. They informed us, one week-ish before the holiday, that rather than the day flight that we'd chosen, because of my wife's health issues, we were on the night flight. Some people were, allegedly, informed while they where in Plakias.

Phoned Olympic to try and redress things, but the utterly charmless person who I spoke to completely ignored comments re my wife's health issues and quoted us a ridiculous price to fly out at roughly the same that we'd originally booked.

Apparently, this is OK if one reads the small print. However, I saw elderly/infirm people arriving at Gatwick in the early hours of the morning.

To say that I hold Olympic beneath contempt is an understatement. Apologies for the ambivalence for some of the statements, but I don't trust Olympic an inch. I assume that they will have lawyers prepared to explain away what I feel is their shoddy behaviour. It seems to be, these days, that 'it was in our Ts and Cs' excuses any sort of underhanded behaviour.

PlakChat / Re: Plakias-On My Own ?

Nearly happened to me this year, because of stress caused by all sorts of things, although in the end, we went together. Went OK.

I would have gone alone, all the same, having been taken there by mistake in 1994, visited on and off since 1995 and regularly since 2002. Plakias really does feel like my old friend, however daft that sounds.

Don't want to preach, but if I were you, I would go; obviously, that is your choice.

Good luck whichever way you choose to go. Hope things work themselves out.

Richard.

Where to eat...or not! / Gorgona
« on: May 26, 2013, 04:06:32 PM »
Went to Gorgona a couple of nights ago, after not doing so for a couple of years, for no particular reason; just sort of 'forgot' about it.

Great evening, loads of regulars there as far as I could make out, friendly greeting and lovely meal. Same chap running it as I seem to remember from well over 10 years ago (although do the Tavernas swap owners?).

Plakias / Platia Bar
« on: May 26, 2013, 03:59:35 PM »
Does anyone know what has happened to the bakery and Platia Bar? Both apparently closed-down?

I think that the Platia Bar tried too hard to be something that it wasn't of late, as opposed to the 'basic' feel it had in the 90s (which I liked) so perhaps no surprise, but I really liked the pastries etc. from the bakery; good for walks in the gorges and to take on the flight home. A shame in both cases anyhow.

Totally agree with Mike, I have never felt pushed in Plakias in well over ten years' holidays there. This is in contrast with more 'touristy' locations.

That said, many of the Taverna owners recognise our faces now and give us a warm welcome, which is really nice, but they make no more fuss than that. Each year I spend the Winter looknig forward to two weeks of good Greek cuisine....

Hope you enjoy Plakias, we are here at present:)

Well, we are in Plakias at present - arrived Tuesday - and I can't remember such a mixed bag, weather-wise. Generally good but noticeably cooler than previous years, and a fair amount of cloud.

It should improve after Tuesday evening, when we head home....

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Harakas !

Ate there last week, and it is still one of my favourite tavernas.

Owners are always friendly and give us a good welcome each year when we return to Plakias. The portion sizes are just right for me, I find too much food off-putting and wasteful; spoils the meal, fo me at least.
