Where to eat...or not! / Re: Sirocco Restaurant
« on: March 23, 2014, 10:23:49 AM »
I think that my meaning wasn't immediately clear and so have added some text to clarify, Daniel.

With regard to choice of post, I was responding to similar comments above.

I do not have a 'problem' with Christos, it has just disappointed me often, so I don't eat there any more.

Sirocco was a fine taverna under the previous owners, fish in particular was good; haven't eaten there under the new management but it still looks popular. I will likely give it a try in May.

It certainly is, in my opinion at least. Ideal location, good food and excellent service. We will likely spend some time there when we return to Plakias in May!

Having somehow overlooked Gio Ma for years we have made up for this over the last few holidays. Love the place!

Is it something about time of day? I have just left a post re my complete disappointment with Christos but we only ever had lunch there. I prefer to give people the benefit of doubt but became disenchanted with Christos, despite 'trying' to like it for sentimental reasons (had first meal in Plakias there with lady who is now my wife).

Are evenings different? I would love to be wrong on this one.

Re comments above about Christos. We always had lunch on our first day for sentimental reasons, but I am afraid I have to agree with the comments above regarding the service. Consequently we don't bother any more.

I do not like to criticise unduly, especially as in some ways the staff in question can mot respond, but I have found some at Christos to be just plain rude, typified by the disdainful response to my efforts to try some Greek. Elsewhere, taverna staff/owners seem delighted, or at least pleasantly amused by my efforts . Just cut-off mid sentence at Christos. Happy to say that this is the only experience of this nature in Plakias and Greece.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Traditional Greek Tavernas

I agree that retsina is a lot less 'resiny' than the early 90s, to my taste at least. I wondered was I simply becoming accustomed to the taste but I don't think so, not entirely at least.

We have eaten at pretty well all the tavernas in a Plakiaa, including hose with the salmonella tanks, thankfully with no ill-effects (well, not from the food at least, but occasionally from overly-enthusiastic retsina sampling!)

Where to stay / Re: best bars

Nufaro gets my vote, for an early evening aperitif at least.

Used to frequent the Platia bar but it seemed to go downhill a bit, and not sure it was actually still open on our last visit if it returns in its previous form then would certainly give it a go.

Skinos is also a good choice in our experience, lovely views as it is on the Souda road just outside the village and literally yards from the sea. No breakfast but a couple of places that do breakfast literally a two minute walk along the road.

Manolis and family, who run the place, are very nice people. Rooms are clean and airy, and the new apartment on the second floor is fantastic. Essentially, it is on the roof and so almost the size of the entire floor below it and has views right across the bay to both headlands. I could almost have spent the entire holiday there. Back in May!

Many thanks for this, didn't think to Google it.

U-boats in Plakias though! Hard to imagine now. though it makes sense geographically

Went for a walk beyond far end of the beach last year, beneath the 'coloured' cliffs and heading towards the Kalypso. Found a tunnel with what looked like limestone chips on the flor. Didn't have a torch with me so gave up after fifty yards or so. Does anyone know where this leads, if anywhere?

Plakias / Re: Plakias in slow decline

Thank you, JUA, for a very constructive intervention.

I have no intention of justifying my desire to return (although I know what you mean regarding the perceived need to justify!), it is a personal thing, certain aspects of which I (and others) choose to share in this forum, and other aspects, perhaps not.

Agree that advice on how to help, rather than pessimistic forecasts, might be the better way forward.

Well, at the weekend we booked flights and an apartment at Skinos, for 11 days in May. We may well return later in the year also, went twice this year for the first time and certainly didn't regret it!

There have been changes over the years, some we like and some we like less, things move on. But, we both still love Plakias, and personally, I can't wait to be back.

Richard.

Plakias / Re: Plakias in slow decline

We are relative 'newbies', first (accidental) visit in '94 and first lengthy visit in '95.

Plakias does not seem to have changed that much since my first visit, in some ways at least; perhaps the major changes occurred early(ish) on and then changes have been incremental since then? What do people think?

I remember the coastal road as a track, for example. We walk to Souda at least as often a Paligremnos, when staying at Skinos, as a result.

I do miss the little cake / pastry shop on the corner opposite Ostraco. Seems to have closed for good.
