Gossip / Dare You bare All
« on: May 30, 2004, 09:27:47 PM »
This week's Mail on Sunday (30 may) travel pages have a feature with this topic title enthusing the pros of Skinny Dipping (to quote them). Amongst the 10 best beaches highlighted for "this purpose" is Plakias beach.

Plakias / Road to Selia - newly blacktopped
« on: October 20, 2003, 09:04:31 PM »
The blacktop boys had nearly completed quite a wide road from Plakias to Selia in mid October 2003 - via the old track which goes via that concrete water tank. Not sure how they are going to complete it at the Plakias end as it is exceptionally steep at that end. However it is now quite a major highway except for that last bit.

You can see it on my photo together with that other new unfinished carbuncle building at :-

Plakias / [split] summit of Timeos Stavros
« on: June 17, 2003, 08:13:03 PM »
Karen said "why not go one better and take the walk up to the summit of Timeos Stavros and check out the 360 degree panorama from there." I did just that a couple of years ago and the photos I took - five displayed below show the fantastic views available. Apologies if they are a bit slow loading etc.

Holiday Companies / 2004 Offerings - none from 1st Choice
« on: May 03, 2003, 05:33:33 PM »
Just seen the 2004 First Choice Greece brochure (I like to book WELL ahead) and they make no mention of Plakias as a resort in Crete. Looks as though I shall be joining the independent travel brigade to Plakias. First Choice was an ideal carrier for us people using Newcastle airport - until now difficult to beat their prices from that airport.

Where to go / Plakias - Argiroupolis - Asigonia - Imbros -
« on: November 06, 2002, 02:24:48 PM »
This trip we have done before but now the whole route is tarmac. It is a beautiful journey from Plakias to Asigonia which lies at the head of a VERY deep valley with mountains towering above. Lots of villages to visit especially Argiroupolis. A superb quality road now zig zags up the head of the valley out of Assigonia to the top of the valley - utterly incredible. then a fabulous journey over desolate countrieside via Kallikratis and Asfendos - very high up till one eventually looks DOWN on to Imbros village way down far below to which the now rather narrow but tarmac road descends. Then down the Imbros Gorge road to Hora Sfakion. By now it will be late afternoon and the views between Sfakion and Plakias along that coast road are more than spectacular and I think the best in Crete - especially in late afternoon sunlight. This journey for us has to be the best in Crete. OK for motor bikes as well in good weather. Very exposed on the tops. The rough guide is out of date re the route from Asigonia - I have updated them. All excellent roads - jeeps not required but a good head for heights is required.
