Title: Plakias Map
Post by: Ploppy on September 03, 2006, 05:40:12 PM
You may have seen that I have started working on the Plakias map.

It uses Google Maps and places an overlay of places in Palakias over the top.

You can see the map here. Plakias Map (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://www.plakias.co.uk/Plakias.kml&ie=UTF8&t=k).

If would be great if we could get more places added to it. I can't remember exactly where everything is so I need your help.

If you feel like helping take a look at this article (http://forums.plakias.co.uk/index.php?autocom=articles&code=showarticle&id=2).

Thanks,

Paul

P.S Is Ali & Daves shop right? Is it a tad further up?

Lots more places added now. Starting to look a little crowded!

Thanks to John Page & John R for their assistance.

There is also a link to the map at the top of the page now as well.

The future? A 3d interactive Plakias created from all our Photos.
Not as far away as you might think. Photosynth (http://labs.live.com/photosynth/whatis/).

Wow Ploppy - I did nothing - just gave you one coordinate which you fixed for me. All the thanks are for you in managing this super useful project. May look a bit crowded but things get better when one zooms in. Terrific job.

I just think this map is SO good. Congratulations are just not enough for Ploppy (alright with some help as well) Ploppy DO seek me out for a Mythos or two after my arrival 26/27 Sept. I reckon Tourist companies would pay big money for something like this and it really makes me proud to be a minor part of this superb forum.

For me , one zooms in and then uses the menu at the left and the overcrowding problem becomes insignificant with the map moving from place to place at the clickof a mouse.

Just think - in just under 3 weeks time I'll be able to do all that on the ground  for real - counting .................

Ploppy - I'm capable of walking past my wife in the street and not noticing (Pathetic cause she is beautiful) so if you see me then grab me and demand those Mythos from me. And for the rest of this forum - please don't all pretend to be Ploppy.

Thankyou for the kind words John. We usually go to Medousa for a few meals so we are bound to meet up even if we don't see each other on the street.

As for the icons, one can make them smaller in Google Earth but G Maps doesen't honour this yet along with folders. I could make new separate icons but I think I'll work on some articles first and some links between the articles and the map.

Paul.

If you feel like buying me a Mythos then common decency dictates that I don't refuse such a gesture    Whatever the consequences

I totally agree John, there isn't an 'GOOD' adjective that decribes this, I've used a few and they all seem inadequate, and I do feel really chuffed that I can add some minor input.
We don't want to lose this or the forum, so let's not speculate financial gain... although the images have got to be better than those, ridiculous, hand drawn with biro maps of the area that the reps hand out... Ali??

Hmmmm

The trouble is that we have run out of space on our hosted account, I didn't notice when I uploaded the new map file (it failed due to lack of space).

I think our account must have changed as we are now massively over our quota, struggling to get it below. Will probably need to upgrade our quota.

I'll keep you posted.

Paul

Paul - Until the problem is fixed, one option would be to post the map on another site eg. Flickr, then provide a link to it on the forum.

Yep got it working over the weekend after I sorted out some issues with our web hosting.

Should be ok now, on top of the new registrations as well so hopefully we can get some new members posting.

The map looks to be very good.

In view of one of the other postings I've seen today, perhaps we should do have the doctor's surgery on there. I'm not sure exactly where it is. Perhaps somebody who knows where things are could add all the other essential serices, e.g. the post office and the other cash machines. I see the pharmacy is already there.

Yes , good idea.

I think it is directly next door to the Pharmacy, I will update the map so that it says Pharmacy/Surgery or something along those lines.

The Surgery is the red/brown roofed building opposite the car park. The Pharmacy is the grey roofed building immediately south west of it, across the alleyway and adjoining the back of the Hotel Lamon.

My balcony overlooked the alleyway!

I notice that there is only one ATM listed on the map (one at the end of the main stretch sandwiched between Kyma bar and the Alianthos Beach).

Unless things have changed there in the last nine months there are in fact three in total-one opposite sofia restaurant (part of the finikas Municipality building) and the other close to the Livicon Hotel half way down the main beach road.

There is also a supermarket close to this ATM on the main road that is also not featured-is there any reason for this?

Otherwise it is a great idea!

Yes it is very much work in progress, the reason for the ATMs was at the time I couldn't remember exactly where the others were.

I'll stick them in later.

Hiya,

Yes you're right I did do an article. I have the old DB dump at home and I am going to try and put them back in manually at the weekend.

In the meantime if you have Google Earth then you could give me the co-ordinates to put in.
Or you could just describe where it is, I know most bits in Plakias.

Cheers,

Paul
