Title: are holiday companies pulling out of Maleme?
Post by: john39 on August 26, 2005, 07:08:28 PM
Hello

I've just returned from two weeks in Maleme. I've heard rumours that holiday companies are pulling out of Maleme? A couple of locals told me that they thought this was the case.

Has anyone else heard this?

Unless I am very wrong, all this guy is trying to do is promote the web site he is advertising in his post. It wasn't a serious question.

The best thing we can do is to ignore him.

I have suggested this link is removed to the Admin.  I think if these people had spoken to the admin of this site to get a link set up it would have been a much more kosher approach and maybe they will learn from this.

This is a serious post. I've been coming to Greece for the last 16 years. I've been unable to find out if its true that companies have been pulling out of Maleme. I thought that I would ask around on a few forums (including those not directly linked to the resort itself). I'm just a bit surprised about your objections to my signature. If I was spamming the forum I could understand it.

Its your choice whether to click on a link or not.

Er, where is Maleme?  And what has it got to do with Plakias?     I'm with Ali & Dave and all my other fellow-Plakformers on this one.

according to the Rough Guide, it's on the north coast of Crete about 15km west of Hania, and the nearby airfield saw much of the early fighting in the Battle of Crete in 1941.  They don't give any indication as to why anyone would choose to spend two weeks there, however.

As a travel agent there is some truth in what John has asked.
Aren't you guys being a bit harsh? Has anyone looked at his website?
I have and to be honest their is not much difference between his forum and this one. They're both about greece and people that love to travel there. I can see your point of view about advertising but I didn't see any complaints when ukplakias 'advertised' the fact that he uses Travel counsellors or when links are added to other websites? Perhaps This bloke didn't realise he could use that in his signature-he seems to let members do it on his forum? And I've seen it on other forums too. I agree with Ali&Dave and I think a good idea would be to state  somewhere when you join, that it's not allowed.
But lets not turn into bullies now! It must seem very unwelcoming?!

There are other places that have been discussed on this forum apart from Plakias!

In fact recommending other resorts was a forum topic last year (and quite useful it was too, as many of us go to other places apart from Plakias).

See [a href=\"http://forums.plakias.co.uk/index.php?PHPSESSID=7c91d610a82d32806f16145c18bbd356&showtopic=383&st=0]link.[/url]

Hi fraoula

It does seem quite unwelcoming.

Using a forum such as this and others is an excellent way of getting info from people who actually go to the resorts. I was mearly asking a legitimate question. Tour companies have been pulling out of many Greek resorts recently. I thought that some of the regulars on this forum may know something.

I'm surprised by the reaction my post has caused. Using your signature to include links is widely known. I wont sink to silly remarks about resorts I havent heard of, or been to.

Dear John39,

It is a matter how you approach a forum. If you had started with:
" I know this question has nothing to do with Plakias, but perhaps someone of this forum has some information about this subject.  I would appreciate to receive any information on this."
You would not have seen such negative reactions.

Question: Which tour operator(s) are you referring to???? and were recently active in Maleme??

Regards
Beachcombers

I don't own the site so I cannot give an official response, I'll ask Ostraco when we catch up for beers at the weekend in Plakias

My personal opinion is that personal links are ok (lots of people use them in other forums) especially when it is for something non-commercial and in this case somewhat related.

Perhaps because we are a non-technical forum there are very few sigs with links in (heck I can't even be bothered to put one in to my Plakias pics!) so when one does come along people think toes are being trodden on.

Cheers,

Paul... who has just passed his exam and will be flying home tomorrow (thank god.. as nice as Philly is 5 weeks is too much) ready to come out to Plakias Friday evening... Hurrah

Well said Paul - I have no problem with links - what I would find annoying would be animated graphics in signatures, whether or not they were advertising something. Congrats on passing the exams. Hope to see you in Plakias (possibility of us having to cancel   - will know at the weekend)

Hey Ploppy

Congratulations on passing the exams.  We'll just have to celebrate at the weekend.

Graham and Karen, very sorry to hear you may not make it. Hope things get sorted for you.

I know Maleme and it's surrounds very well as we usually meet up with friends there for Battle of Crete commemorations in May. (yes it is a long drive from Plakias)

Its a small town with a unremarkable beach, and not a lot going on. I haven't any information about tour operators pulling out.

I rather suspected that it will get eaten up as Platinias expands westwards down the coast in the Hersonissos manner. Already the gap between Platinias and Gerani is disappearing..Maleme next.

Searched and asked around, could be true. North Crete is now being equivalent with Turkish tourist resorts. Package flights to Turkey (year around) are  much cheaper.
Competion is fierce due to still increasing tourist developments in Turkey.

I imagine that recent events in Turkey are going to hit their tourist trade very badly this year

(worryingly I sneezed when I wrote that..... :'( )

I hate to ruffle everybody's feathers but I suspect this problem will hit more that just Turkey (the country that is) before the end of this season.
