You'll be pleased to know that Gina is still in Plakias.  She has managed to find a couple of part time jobs and I am sure would love some custard powder if anyone is coming over but not 1000's or we may have to have a custard party next winter!!

Gossip / Planned building in Plakias
« on: May 04, 2005, 06:38:22 PM »
Hi Shinaria

Good news, meltemi is still there and they still have not started building.  There are a few changes, the 'car park' by the Alianthos Hotels is being landscaped which will hopefully improve the approach to the village and the Mrytis Hotel at the back of the village is being excessivly extended, don't know when it will be finished.

The beach at the far end of the bay is still nudist by the family from Palegremnos have built a small beach bar just in front of the Taverna.

There are a few changes in the restuarants, the Tavernaki (which used to do mexican food) has been taken over by Nikos who used to serve in the Kafenion Yiallia over the last few years.  And up in Mirthios Wolfgang no longer has Panorama but it is now run by Georgos who has worked there for years and the food and atmosphere is great.

Daskaloyannis, I think you got the situation correct completely.  I know there are many people who want to live here because the country and people are excellent, unfortunately we also have the others.

Jim, pleased to hear you are having a good time, keep those pedals goings.

Gossip / A Place In Greece
« on: April 05, 2005, 11:09:28 AM »
One of the things I find amazing are people who have moved to Crete (not just Plakias and not just British) who do not like the Greeks.  Makes you wonder why they don't just stay in their own countries!!  On the subject of where to find land etc, I will try and get a list together of agents from some friends who are busy looking at the moment.

Where to stay / First Choice Pull out of Plakias!
« on: June 26, 2004, 11:44:18 AM »
We have been told that Apollo apartments are being taken over by a British tour operator next year (currently mainly czech) and seperatly we have been told that Kosmar are going to start coming to Plakias.  No idea if the two are combined.  Argo Travel also come to Plakias at the moment and have a couple of rooms at Apollo.  Have had bad reports about Argo e.g. people having to pay £109 for the transfer and then having four people in a taxi.  Olympic are also being really bad on transfers, many people have turned up in the middle of the night and have either by dropped in the main square or outside apartments and left to find their own rooms.  Olympic have no rep based in Plakias this year but First Choice have an excellent rep this year, a guy called Gary, who is very committed to his job and trying to ensure problems are sorted as best he can.

Ploppy, may be able to get you an apartment where we will hopefully be living soon, it is at the end of the beach behind Parigremnos (can't spell tonight) is that too far out?  Let me know the dates and I will speak to the guy who rents the apartment if you are interested.

Hi Barny

As John says, we run a minimarket, it is long hours in the summer (we don't spend all the time drinking, honest)  but well worth it to be able to live here.  The Greek is getting better but sigar sigar (slowly slowly).  We are just renting an apartment for now, so haven't fully investigated buying although quite a few people came in the shop last year who are buying land to build.  Seems to be complicated and you need to good consultants to help you.

Will look out for you when you are over later in the year

Plakias / Has work started yet?
« on: December 01, 2003, 02:20:04 PM »
Hi folks.  The new hotel is not yet underconstruction.  Phillipos has decided to go to court to try and keep Meltemi open.  No news at the moment what is happening but we still don't have the club to go to on a Saturday night as they are not allowed to trade whilst it is going through the court.  Will keep you posted.

Plakias / Crowded Plakias?
« on: August 13, 2003, 06:31:17 PM »
Ploppy,

We aim to shut the shop around 11.30 but it's quite often later than that.  Just in time for everyone to be finishing their meals so we can join them for a drink!!

John,

Desperately missing real ale so if someone could bring out a barrel, it would be great!!!  Definitely not missing the rush hour but we are missing Tescos Veggie Burgers.

Looking forward to seeing you

I think we need an even number so let's make it 22.  Either Dave or myself will come along unfortunately leaving the other in the shop.  Ploppy finishing in Meltemi sounds like a very good idea (until the following morning!!!)

Dave and I have just moved to Plakias, came out on the 1st March.  Having been in love with the place for a few years, we decided to take the big step and took over the Agora Minimarket opposite the Yallia Kafenieon.  We're pleased to say after an atrocious spring the weather is finally improving.  The Flowers are lovely and there's been lots of interesting birds.  If anyone is passing the shop we would love to hear what's going on in the outside world, although it is very easier to forget that it exists.
