Yes you can pass with a car now, the road has been re-built and stoned but no tarmac at the moment but this is due any day I am told.

Plakias / Update
« on: March 17, 2019, 10:52:57 PM »
Things are slowly getting ready for the new season here, still a lot of damage by the flooding with many roads badly damaged, it has not rained here a lot for a couple of weeks but there is still a lot of water coming down the mountains and running at the side of roads showing how much water there is still seeping through the ground.

The road by Preveli bridge was badly damaged as further up the river could not take the extra flow so it formed a new river running parallel to the main one going around rather than under the bridge taking the road with it, work has stared on the repair of this so should be finished for the new season.

The beach itself was also badly damaged as the river now runs straight into the sea and not curving at the beach this new outfall was so wide it washed away a good 1/3rd of the beach so I am guessing they will have to get a machine in there somehow to try and remodel the beach, the palm trees seem largely unaffected.

The road at the entrance of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge was completely destroyed and will take at least another 6 weeks to repair so all traffic is having to use the smaller Kotsifou Gorge.
There was a significant landslide caused by the rain just outside the new harbour, this blocked the road completely, it was quickly cleared but still is a big mess with piles of soil both sided of the road.

The ATM next to the fish spar was literally blown up a few weeks ago by a failed robbery attempt causing a lot of damage to the ATM and the front and side of the Fish Spa, I guess again this will be replaced by the new season but is just boarded up at the moment.
The new development at Palegrimnos has been put back a year so no change.

A bit of building work going on but no major new developments just the odd house here and there.
I’m sure it will be all put back together before the main season starts.

Charlie is getting older now and slowing down a bit (our dog) our niece is now living with us and we have also her Pug called Bella so you might see them both playing in the sea.

Life is good here we have many good friends and enjoy every day !

Plakias / The Maltese Falcon
« on: November 15, 2018, 08:39:15 AM »
The superYacht the Maltese Falcon was moored up just outside the new harbour  the other day, its is one of the biggest and most expensive yachts ever built 88m long with 2400m2 of sail  area and 3 number  66m masts, all rigged and controlled electronically , the statistics are amazing if you google it but that's what you get for over 100 million !

Me and a few local friends when out on my boat to get a closer look, and its a long story but they asked if we could take someone back to the port which we did, and in thanks they gave us a tour of the boat and invited us on board for a meal, a once in a lifetime experience.

Plakias might be quite now but it never stops to amaze me the things that happen.

All the tourist have gone now and it's nice a quite plans have been made to build the second phase of the Plakias suites at the far end construction is due to start any day they are just sorting out the last bit of paperwork reportedly.

Have a great winter everyone.

I will post updates now and then .

Very unusual for this size and type to be so close locals said its the first some of them have ever seen.

Dirty Laundry!
For people that did not know there is a woman Desuela in Plakias that will wash and fold your holiday clothes, so that you can bring less especially if you are coming for two weeks or more or just get the washing done before you go so its less hassle when you get home, she is very good very friendly , and speaks good English and is cheap, most things are done for the next day her phone number is  30 697 5831107, just call her the day before you want anything done any she will arrange to collect the washing from you.

Yes the dust in the air was very bad the worst locals have ever seen, in the photo you should be able to see the new harbour, some of the hotels had just finished cleaning and sprucing things up just to have to do it all again as the cloud left a layer of orange dust everywhere, it has returned again tonight but nowhere near as bad and will probably be gone by tomorrow.

On a better note the road works have all pretty much finished and Plakias has a new tarmac road from outside Kri Kri past Ostricos and right up to the top of the hill before on the rocks, also a new foot bridge has been built over the river in between the two main front car parks. And we have new street lights on the main road down the hill into Plakias.

It waa the independence parade today and it felt like the whole of Plakias had come out to see it, a real family and community affair.

Plakias / Re: Open restaurants?
« on: February 27, 2018, 07:55:33 PM »
As an overview it averages about 15 in the day dropping to about 10 at night, the coldest has been about 8 in the day and the warmest about 25, so compared to Uk at lot warmer although last year was a lot colder going down to 3-4 deg some days.
Not much else happening -  the road works are still working towards the new harbour just got past Tasomanolis Taverner leaving a wake of destruction in the badly stoned trench they have left behind starting outside Kri Kri, further to my last post on the Creta Mare they are having new glass balconies handrails and they have made the rooms about a meter bigger and with new wider patios to get a better look at the view ! A new development has just started next to Plakias Suits at the far end and I have been told it is 14 apartments and 3  or 4 houses I think they are for sale once complete rather than to be rented.

Sifi, and Throubie open all the year round only closing for a week or so for re-decorating but both open at the moment, the souvlaki restaurant on the main road is open most days, I think Mouses will open in a month and Merastri at Selia was opening Fri, Sat and Sunday not sure if they are still doing that and Taverna Mariou at Mariou is open all of the time, Stells at Lefkogeia is always open day and night, so plenty to choose from some of the smaller places have a limited "winter menu" .
Oscraco`s and the coffee shop up from Tasomanolis are open all day.
Its a great time of year to come but the town is a bit of a mess at the moment with all the pipe laying works going on, where were you planning on staying ?

Just and update on the CretaMare, they have constructed a metal frame in the balcony of each room see photo attached and have now formed a plasterboard around this steel which will form the new patio door opening giving each room an extra 18inch to 2ft, it seems a lot of work for a little gain but am sure they have there reasons.

I'm not sure about the building to the rear of Plakias Suites, I guess they were just making that resort a bit bigger but I might be wrong, If I hear anything I will let you all know.

Quite a bit of rain yesterday and today with an onshore wind the waves were very big 2m high at least depositing stones and a bit of debri on the main sea front road.

Still digging outside Sofia Taverna so one way road still completely blocked off, making it very difficult for lorries to get the new harbour side of things and they are having to go right around and drop down in from Selia.

No the car park is a builders yard for all the equipment and materials they are digging it up in places to lay new drains and manholes but there isn't a building or anything being constructed, I guess it will all be back to normal before the tourist season starts.
There was a concrete lorry outside the Creta Mare today and they have concreted new front kerbs to all the balconies, I will take a photo and if I can work out how to reduce its size I will post it up here.

Well its all happening at the moment here on sunny Crete !
The main car park outside Kri Kri is now a full scale building site you can just squeeze past with a car but the road is closed at the corner by the Pharmacy so to get to the road by on the rocks you have to go through the car park at the back of the Apollo  down the dirt track and out the back coming back in just up from the Carma Rooms.
For those staying at the hotel Lemon it is having major work to the ground floor reception and is completely gutted.
The hotel Creta Mare now looks like is has been hit with a bomb and has no front, all the balconies have been smashed down including no patio doors or glass.
The building at the back next door to Manolis Apartments has been a concrete shell for many years but now is well on the way to completion  a new 5 star hotel I am told, they have squeezed a big swimming pool in between the two buildings and it looks set to be open for this season.
Weather is great at the moment a few windy days last week but now in the 15deg mark with sunny but sometimes cloudy days.

The apartments have been a concrete shell for about a couple of years now, look like four boxes about 50 yards past on the rocks  towards the new harbour, they are up a short track about 10 meters higher than the main road.

Charlie is fine still running around like a mad puppy at 11 years old.
Sorry for the delay, its been a busy time here in the last few weeks with building our house, everything is good here, a few changes... Manolis from Manolis Apartments at the back is building a new house/apartments next to the camping site, he and his family will live there all year round and also rent some rooms in the summer, he currently lives in Rethymno in the winter and comes to Plakias every day to feed his chickens round the back by the Youth Hostel.
A bit more work has gone on with the new apartments just up from "On the Rocks" but work has stopped again so who knows when they will be finished.
The road just up from Tasomanolis is about to get obliterated with two 30 ton diggers parked there and some blue marker paint on the road so it looks like we are in for some new drains, the car park opposite Kri Kri is now a builders yard with 60 odd tons of stone and gravel and a few machines waiting for the work to start.
We went out to Sifis last night and can report that there new log fire is brilliant, they have also enclosed the front with some new glass doors and removed the old white ones so the place has now doubled in indoor seating, he said that they will remove the log burner in the summer though so some of you might not see it.
Most of the boats are out of the water at the moment and parked around the new harbour.
A couple more houses are being built on the road from Plakias / Souda to Selila.

Weather wise most days are around the 15 deg mark some a bit windy with showers but some like a summers day getting into the low 20`s in the sun.
I love this time of year as locals are more relaxed now the Olives are done and they have time to sit and chat and drink plenty of Greek coffee and Raki of course.

Thank you Charlie's mum and dad, we all would be delighted for any snippets and updates when you can !  How old is Charlie, did you bring him with you or is he Greek?  Sorry, probably being too nosey but lovely that he enjoys a swim - sounds a perfect pooch !

Charlie is 11 so 77 in dog years but still bounds around like a puppy, yes we brought him with us by road as he would have hated flying and big noise and he runs and hides, it can be a bit embarrasing around easter here as people are always randomly setting off fireworks and we have to go and rescue him from under the nearest table he can find, often to the bewilderment of the people having  lunch or dinner at that table.
He has made a lot of friends around here, we pass people in the road and they say "hello Charlie" and we haven't a clue who they are ! People remember him not us , but its all good and he is pretty well behaved and we take him with us most times we go out.
