Plakias / Re: Still fantastic
« on: December 06, 2017, 09:41:30 PM »
I presume is the taverna in Mariou

Yes sorry my spelling mistake, yesterday was a sunny day got to 25/26 deg but rained a lot today and even had some hailstones, good day to go to the bank and sort out paperwork like car tax and insurance things that I normally put of until the last minute, been living here just over a year renting in Lefkogeia at the moment and building a house overlooking the new harbour, we have a white Labrador called Charlie who loves it here even more than us, hard to keep him out the sea he can often be seen swimming by Ostricos.
If anything happens of note I will post it up.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Selia tavernas
« on: June 23, 2017, 09:27:50 PM »

To my knowledge there are 5 taverna’s in Selia, so I guess it depends on what you want.

As MickyDripping said Elia`s run by Nickos  is good, quite upmarket, but good food although I thought a little expensive, you then have Menastri which has the same views as Elia`s and is run by Yogos and Annie a brother and sister, they serve modern Greek food with a twist.

On the way out of Selia towards Rodakino you have another Taverna owned by Nicos I can’t remember the taverners name but it has large glass windows and is on the right just as you get to the end of Selia, Nicos has been a chief in and around Plakias for the last 25 years and his menu is a bit less adventurous and more traditional and his prices reflect this.

Then again I can’t remember the name but there is a taverna on the lower road as if you were going to the cheese factory again this is very traditional and mainly barbequed traditional meats and dishes, I have only been once but it was OK.

Then there is the one in the centre opposite Elia`s, I have been a few times good basic food with prices to match.

So Take you pick and bon-appetite

Plakias / Re: The Beach

The yellow boat is a rib owned by the people that own the forum shop, it was moored just a few meters off the beach opposite the forum for a couple of days but now has been moved to the harbour.
So no need to panic that water sports have spoilt the beach :)

Plakias / Re: Building work ?

Most of the building work is now finished, the hotel lemon has had a major overhaul and they have gutted the top floors re-built all the inside walls and new balconies etc,  I think it is just about finished now.

A new block of apartments has sprung up on the road to the far end opposite Alianthos Beach, just in the plastering stage now so maybe  finished in a month or so.

The new Taverner opposite the cosy bar is called "Throumpi" and is very good, its more of a traditional menu and Manolis the owner goes into the mountains most day to collect the herbs and greens that they serve and free dives in the season to catch octopus.

Manousis taverner at the back of Alianthos Gardens has had a overhaul with new decor, toilet block and updated menu, new staff, a must visit for regulars I would suggest.

Sifis is still as good as ever, Geo Mar has had some work done, but not sure exactly what there was just some building materials outside for a few weeks in Jan/Feb.

A few new houses springing up on the Selia / Plakias road overlooking the new harbour my house being one of them.

The taverner on the right just as you drive out of selia towards the small george ( I cant rember the name ) is good, Nikos the owner/chef has been working in the Plakias area as a chef at many taverners for the last 25 years and is now open again for his second season.

Its getting busy in the main town now, I must admit I prefer it when we were just about the only "foreigners" in town on a night and people has time to chat, but now we are in the mid 20s I can't say I miss the winter weather.

Happy holidays everyone ... and Yamas !

No snow at plakias, a lot of rain and seaweed knee deep on the beach by the taverners.

Not sure exactly what you are looking at but no major building work going on in the town, the road has been dug up for the new sewerage pipework from the new harbour towards Sellia, and at Sellia it has been closed off now for a couple of weeks at the narrow bit as you go into the village.
A new Taverna has opened opposite the Cosy back yard,  used to be a supermarket, very good food and Manolis the owner is very friendly, nice decor, and a small local produce shop at the back, he is open now I think to get things running and be ready for the main season.
Some serious rain at times,  Preveli bridge road impassable to traffic as the river is running like a torrent and would wash a vehicle downstream if you tried to pass, some big waterfalls have appeared, pity I can not upload a video to this forum as quite impressive.
A nice time of year, quiet and people have the time to talk, the road to Rethymnon is closed today due to snow, its quite a bit colder that side.

Hope the weather is as forecast ... sunny next week, as we are back to Plakias on Tue for a week, mind you we have been there before this time of year with some big storms and its quite something to watch almost none stop lightning and rocks the size of your fist being washed up across the sea front road.

It will be good to go Olive picking and Raki making and of course it would be rude not to taste it !

No that would be far to organised !

When we left on Sat ....

Ostrico has a steel frame which has been painted an off greyish colour, and is waiting to have glass bi-folding doors installed similar to the ice cream place over the road.

Muses is a glue-lam frame (timber) structure with wooden slats to the roof and a glass atrium which would have been installed by now but was made 200mm the wrong size so has gone back to manufacture for alteration, glass panel sides with wood panel at the bottom.

Sofia, galvanised metal frame covered with  a white washed wood effect plastic trim.

We are back end Oct so will take a few pics of complete structures and post up here unless someone else beats me to it.

I have to say I still think it looked better when there was nothing.... still once they are all finished it will be better that what was there before, makes me wonder if the fire was an "accident" !

Hoping our house sells in UK soon then we will be permanent residents of Plakias ( or just outside, half way on the road to Selia )

Frank.

Muses has a structure with glass going in on the next few days
Ostraco has a steel frame and Sofia's has a steel frame being welded on site today so things are moving on I guess in a few weeks they will all have sheltered tables !

Hi
Although this is my first post and we are relative newbies to Plakias and have only been going for the last 5 years, although we do go at least 3-4 times a year so I guess that's 15 years + in real terms IYSWIM :)

Taverna Manousos is a great place to eat, Manousos himself has goats, Chickens and lambs, he has his own fishing boat moored at the new harbour and goes out at least a couple of times a week, so the meat is always good and the fish fresh, and you know were it came from, and its all fresh not frozen.

We often go there and ask him just to give us a meze of what he has and the food just keeps coming and its always good.

It is a bit tucked away and not flash tables and décor like the new Taverna next door but for real Greek food its great, and there is always a warm welcome from him and his daughter Maria and wife Desula ( not sure about spelling ! ) ,  its a real family business.

As they say " You should not judge a book by its cover"

We are back (4th time this year you can`t get enough of a good thing !) end of Aug and will definitely be paying Manousos a visit !
