Well done, Chris, great idea and perfect timing ..............

I've just (part) created my first Flickr photostream of Plakias.

Please note: it's not quite how I want it - display is in reverse order, for some (unknown) reason!

Travellingran: better not to react to this person, in computer terms it is called: 'Don't feed the troll' cause if you do he will just go on and on.....
Btw, I wonder if it's technically possible to block this site for certain IP adresses, would be great if it could be done cause it's very annoying to be confronted with such negativety and cynicism all the time.............

Hello Chris,

I think we should be very careful about banning people for expressing a contrary opinion. If people are acting illegally, selling things, or "phishing" then fair enough, but it is still a free country (relatively speaking anyway).

I would go along with  'Don't feed the troll' though. Sit on your hands, TravellingGran!

This is just a personal opinion, but the last Dimitri post seemed a reference to the Cretan independent spirit, which I think many of us find to be a major attraction of the island.

Do we really want to flame members or bar them just because they have different views to our own? Can we not put our counter views without making personal attacks?

Again, a personal view, but I cannot remember any posts from Dimitri which would put him into the troll category. I have experienced real trolls on other sites.

Mike from Sussex is trying to excuse the disgraceful behavour of Dimitri with the defence 'he is an independant spirit.'  Oh , is he really !.
It is interesting that the people most offended by his postings are female -whether in Forum postings or in private PM's .

The male members springing to his defence are almost as bad as him by re-inforcing his bullying tactics. The greatest problem Dimitri has is his inability to understand and write the English language. He does not understand humour or irony ,nor does he reply directly to postings but just fires off more self indulgent hatred and selfishness at will.

I will continue to be annoyed by him as I am one of the 'stupid people' to which he refers. The Forum should  continue to be a '  friendly and relaxed  place -' albeit without  Dimitri and anyone else who dresses up insulting postings as humour , when in fact  male chauvanism and bullying is their intent.

I think you reacted logicaly and sensibly and I entirely agree with you sentiments. Its not too difficult to see that the TROLLS posts are usually offensive and intended to wind folk up.

Relax Gran, and ignore ALL that is really intended to upset you. Thankfully this forum has an abundance of friendly folk so ONLY respond to them and the POSITIVE posts that abound aplenty.

Madam,

You deliberately misquote me and also try to turn the debate into a war of the sexes, for no apparent reason.

Since you are a lawyer, I find this most disappointing.

Whilst I do not know Dimitri and have no reason to defend him, I have found about 70% of his posts and the only personally targeted post was his latest addressed to you, which I do not condone, but can understand.

His posts in the Ali & Dave store thread were not personally insulting to them, though definitely insensitive.

If you do not like something which is posted, you can either ignore it or post a reasoned reply. Starting an escalating war of personal insults will destroy a friendly forum rather than preserve it.

Sir,

I made only one mention of Ali and Dave .This was in a private PM to another member. Why has it appeared on the public forum ?. Thus I am sending this to the public board and not as a PM.

Every reply I have made to Dimwitri has been very reasoned and controlled and your finding fault with this has re-inforced the problem you appear to be having with finding sexism to be the root of my objections. Leaving the real reason to go about his nasty work.

It is unfortunate that Dimwitri has been allowed to escalate his hateful comments - long before I first replied to his postings .

You find my reaction to all this 'disappointing' , given my profession. I would not expect anyone , whatever their persuasion , to sit back and enjoy others being subjected to such tirades of abuse which have been aimed at everyone , whether men or women.

As you do not condone personal attacks I am left wondering why you think fit to do same to me , unprovoked.

That is the very last  posting from me on this subject if you wish . I sincerely hope my other private PMs will not appear here.

Graeme,

This memorial is slightly to the west of Ano Viannos.  I remember the time when a resistance leader, not a part of Viannos but inland from there was led to the impression, wrongly, that the British were about to invade and liberate the island. He conducted an attack on a German patrol in the mountains and killed around a hundred of them.

The reprisal for this attack was conducted by General Meuller  and centred on Ano Viannos and the surrounding villages. The Germans moved into Viannos and murdered everyone, men women and children, that they found there. They continued into several villages around Viannos with equal ferocity.

When I was there there even in 1966 there was a strange air of uncertainty, of fear.

you are, of course, referring to Kaptain Bandouvas, when hearing about the deception plans for the invasion of Italy but not given the deception bit, attacked german forces in kato syme, much to the annoyance of the local SOE guys. he was hounded out of his 'home' area by the germans looking for him and driven west

IIRC and this is off the top of my head, his independent action caused a huge problem with the resistance and he was demanding being taken off crete at one point
