I'm confused, I've never seen any builders on Crete wearing hard hats, and they don't appear to be get a lunch hour.  Are you sure it wasn't 'The Village People' on holiday??

Holiday Companies / From Heraklion Airport to Plakias by bus
« on: August 08, 2008, 09:02:15 PM »
My brother used the company when he visited in July, he paid for the shuttle service about 20 quid each way and was driven down in a taxi.  The taxi driver was very accomodating and dropped him at the Beach Bar (4.30am) on the way down and only had difficulty finding him to go back as the office had put the Lavicon (??) Hotel.  So being the same driver he checked in the Beach Bar first and then checked with the local taxi drivers.

Obviously Mike was lucky he could have been on a minibus dropping along the north coast first.

Where to eat...or not! / Vegetarian food

On my recent trip, I found that Minoiko (near Ali and Dave's shop) offers more imaginative vegetarian fare than the standard array of Briam, Imam and Gemista.    Of course they still have a plentiful choice of carnivorous meals.  Also Niko's Souvlaki place apparently does veggie curry.

I agree with Rodger, Minoiko is now excellent for veggie food.  We went there last week with my brother (friends looked after the shop) and they now have a veggie section on the menu which included some of the usuals plus moussaka and some other different and interesting dishes.  Great prices too.

Also, Ariadne used to be down the road from our shop, currently being totally renovated, not sure of scheduled opening date, this year or next I guess!!

Holiday Companies / Escape the airport and live a little

It's very easy to get from the airport to the port, 1 bus, you need to get you ticket before you get on the bus.  Unfortunately they now only have the fast boat going to Rethymno which is costing about 70 euros a trip so not quite the cheap transport it. It's possible to find the details on the Anek Line website

Plakias / FIRE
« on: July 16, 2008, 08:58:25 AM »
I think the people fighting fires deserve big thanks.  Apparently the helicopters and pilots are Russian and the locals are totally impressed with their skills; flying in very difficult conditions and knowing exactly how to release the water to obtain maximum effect.  A fireman told one of my friends that they really appreciate the help of the locals when fighting fire in the Finikas area as everyone comes out to help and they are shown all the water supplies.

So top marks to everyone fighting the fires    and black marks to people who don't care what they do with the cigarette ends

and again we are witnesses of the fire... There was a fire near souda and there is a report with some photos in a greek magasin showin some UFOs around the helicopters...
With best regards live from Plakias

This magazine article is very weird.  It's a magazine called Third Eye and is about all the weird happenings around the world.  Lots of photos of helicopter both filling up at sea and over the land with the company of 2 flying saucers.  It's strange how people who spent most of the day watching the helicopters never saw anything and nobody else seems to have captured the same pictures.  But it's kept people entertained here.

Dimitri,

I know exactly what you are talking about, and in fact, think I know the guy from Mirthios who you are talking about.  With many of the local people if you treat them with respect you will get the same treatment in return.  There are many guns around but it is only isolated cases (e.g. the two recent incidents in the news) are they used against other people.

I have never felt so safe in a place before, even wondering home by myself in the early hours of the morning and know there are many people here who would help me anytime.

Unfortunately it's usually the bad stories that are 'newsworthy'.

PlakChat / Beer, Beer we want more beer
« on: June 28, 2008, 09:57:55 AM »
Hi

A bit out of touch with the prices as with the new job not going out nearly as much, don't swoon those of you who have known us a few years!!

Some of the Tavernas are certainly still doing Mythos as 2 euro but the bars tend to be from 2.80 up.  With draft at around 3.

If you're wanting different beer for a change, don't forget 'On The Rocks' which has the draft beer from the Craft micro brewery in Athens.  Well worth a taste and whilst it can be a bit expensive, the bar is a great place to relax and have a chat and the beer is definitely worth trying.

Unfortunately we had another fire in the area on Saturday.  It started between Sellia and Souda, just below the level of Sellia and rapidly spread towards the Dragon's Head.  Again we had really bad winds, but not quite as strong as 2006.  They were able to use the fire helicopters and the planes.  The pilot of the helicopter should be given a medal for his flying abilities.  As I say, it was very windy and he was doing a round trip of filling up in the bay and emptying the water over the fire every 10-15 mins.  To keep the helicopter steady in the wind we had whilst filling the bucket was so impressive and scary to watch as you worried each time whether he would get back up.  The planes were mainly used when the copter had to go up to the north coast to refuel, and in fact, the planes were taking on water up there as well as the wind was too strong down here.

Luckily apart from a few minor burns and sindged (?? spelling??) hair I don't think anyone was hurt, no houses lost although again some olive trees have been destroyed.

Anyone know the cause of the fire Ali, we all know the last one was a bit suspicious?

Probably cigarette out of a car window.

This is a bit worrying.  It had been suggested that maybe some people had started operating from another area when an ATM got pulled out of a wall (previously three stolen found in Zoniana).  It's of great concern the way they seem to have such willingness to shot people.

What worries me is that some reporting i.e. BBC World, make it sound as though the whole island is run by mafia when it is actually a relatively small number of people with in isolated places.

Plakias / Worrying Development
« on: June 15, 2008, 10:48:16 AM »
Hi Steve

The development goes from Paligremnos to the Beach Bar.  I not sure why I thought the building was white, walking in just now I looked at it and thought, mmmm, not much white there!!

Hi Dave & Ali,

Thanks for the info, just to clarify.

Am I right in assuming that you mean the gap between Antoni's Place and the Paligremnos?

Or is it the gap between the old Meltimi nightclub and Antoni's Place?

Plakias / Worrying Development
« on: June 14, 2008, 07:56:17 AM »
Hi

Couple of points:

1.  Yes, the foundations are this deep, when you are building on sand you need to get down the rock underneath.

2.  No, it will not get as far as Adonis' Place.  The development goes as far as the white building opposite the beach bar.

Other news is that Plakias Panorama has now been painted a stoney colour so does not stick out nearly as much as it did.
