There's not much wind today but the last couple of days a breeze has been coming in shore hence the waves.  Very nice weather at the moment.

Didn't realise these webcams were there, good views.

Unfortunately the weather station doesn't appear to working at the moment which is very frustrating as I've no idea just how hot it is here at the moment.

Saw the first gig last year which was great.  Missed this years as I had to work but everyone seemed to have a really good time.  It's amazing how many talents come on holiday to Plakias.  Billy please, next year, make it a Sunday night so I can come along.

I know for sure you can get a SIM card in the main Xristodoulakis supermarket in the middle of the village.  To get a phone card you now have to register it with prove of id i.e. passport.  If you go to the supermarket between 10am and 4pm Mon-Sat they can register your phone and get you up and running.

The new sandwich bar is great for snacks some different things on the menu but you can get the old favourites: cheese and spinach pies.  Also do great crepes.

You can get fresh bread in all the supermarkets delivered daily early in the morning.

Whilst the tavernas may be becoming smarter, the atmosphere has not changed and the same friendly service is being offered.  They may have modernised but you can't expect a country to stand still.

Sounds like an interesting price.  Does this include free kilometres and fully comprehensive insurance (i.e. tyres etc) and a second driver?

Happy New Year to everyone and despite world economics we hope to see you this year.

Good news to start the year is that Dave has a job.  He'll be working in the supermarket next to our old one in the evenings from 4 onwards.

It is a great relief to us to have both of us in employment so I'll be in Alianthos Car Hire from 3 and Dave working in the supermarket from 4 and it will be great to see any of you when you are here.

I guess we will just have to go to the beach in the morning

i was doing a little   searching on the net and came across a lovely review of Plakias on the holiday truths site

Holiday-Truth Readers Reports

mr & mrs jones from liverpool travelled to Plakias in 9/2006

mr & mrs jones rated Plakias as follows:

mr & mrs jones Posted this report and said:

the resort we stayed in was lovley and very central, the bus service was exellent, the main resorts of hesonisis and malia were in walking distance, the people were as usual very polite and very freindly, the weather and scenary was beutiful as we expected it would.

holiday truths

and i thought i'd done some decent walking around Plakias

Love it.  Had customers who had no idea where they were but they didn't try and walk to Malia.  Roll on 'Holiday Truths'

Plakias / Worrying Development

good to see their still keeping up with the tradition of ripping off total mugs.An old Cretan tradition,as i have pointed out on previous posts.
serves them all right for being so stupid, has no one ever seen what they build houses with on Crete? I built some of the rent rooms in plak and a fair bit of two of the hotels on Damnoni. The things cost nothing to build in terms of materials, the labour was done by a lot of dumb backpackers, now you lot pay silly money to stay there and complain when they build a new development. You are the source of the problem your moaning about, cut out the wailing and give the locals some more money.

Let's please put this in persective, let's face it all over the world building projects have failed.  Yes, no one wanted this in Plakias but world economics effect us the same as else where.  Again Dimitri comes up with 'us and them' why do we keep having to  listen to this.  If he has ever done any work here, bravo,  but I do not believe it.  When I see the difference between the Plakias Resorts site and the Appollonia Villas Site (which is still going ahead) the only difference is the management and believe me the Plakias Resorts management is so much better (tidying up rubbish, controlling work flows etc.).

This guy has not been in this area for years he does not know or understand (and I believe has never understood) the locals

Dimitri

It's obvious that whilst you were here you never got to understand the local culture and maybe that'swhy you left.  When you said you wanted to run a 'taxi' service to the airport only during the day, are you talking about actually going through all the licensing required for proper taxi drivers or just trying to scam some money.

We are not hated here and after 6 years of a lot of hard work there are many people here who have huge respect for us and we will continue to live here.  Yes, I could go back to UK and earn 3 or 4 times the amount but the quality of live here, for me, is much better and what is money at the end of the day.

You constantly put negative comments on the board and I know talking to people during the summer we're bored of it.  Maybe you could keep your negative comments to yourself and let the rest of us enjoy the Plakias we love.

Hi

Just a quick note as we lose phone line today.  Firstly thank you to everyone who has sent PMs, unfortunately due to time restraints I can't answer them just yet.

But Dave and I will definitely be around next year and as George says we will hopefully be able to socialise a bit more.

Will hopefully be back on line in a couple of weeks.

Hi

Thank you all for you kind comments and firstly I would like to thank everyone of our customers over the last six years.

As Chas said we were getting ready for a winter of paperwork to change the shop into Dave's name so that I could claim unemployment benefit next winter after doing my second season at Alianthos.  We had discussed signing the new 3 year lease with our landlady being in Dave's name. But then a couple of days later we were told that if we wanted to sign a new lease we would have to put in all new windows and doors and metal shutters on the front of the shop as a friend of the family wanted to open a pharmacy and they were willing to do this.  We were given until that evening to decide but it actually only took 5 mins as we do not have that sort of money and we would never get it back.

The ironic thing was that as we were standing outside the shop in stunned disbelief a lorry reversed up the road with a new CocaCola fridge for us.  We have only been trying for six years to get a new one!!!!  So they ended up taking the old one away.

It has been a bit of shock and whilst normally we would now be winding down and get some rest we are working our butts off trying to get everything sorted as the leases ran out yesterday, but they are going to have to wait a few days.  All the remaining stock is going this evening and then we just have to sorted out all our personal junk we've been storing in the shop.  All with two weeks notice

However, if we get Dave sorted with a job for next season, we may get a life, may actually get to the beach next summer and may even be better off!!  So hopefully it will be the start of much better things.

As Chas also mentioned once we leave the shop we will loose our internet until we can get something sorted out home so our contact will be fairly erratic (never was very good  )  So again thank you from us both for all your support and we'll see you next year.

Where to go / Events in and around Plakias
« on: September 07, 2008, 08:49:47 AM »
Hi Graham and Karen

Just checked a Greek Name Day website and Sept 14th is Timeos Stavros day.  We've never yet made it to Kali Sika, partly due to work and partly due to the fact we only ever find out about it after the event.

Advertising for events doesn't seem very popular here, apart from Paligremnos, any live music seems to be advertised 2 days before.  We decided not to go to an event on Souda Beach at the end of August due to lack of warning and have regretted it ever since.  Can't remember the name of the lead man but it happened to be on one of the windless nights in August and we could hear the music from our apartment behind Paligremnos.  Lay awake listening to great Cretan music and when we got up at 7.30 the next morning it was still going.

Next year we're going
