I'm not happy to see this either, as I don't believe it will enhance Plakias.     I can't exactly work out where it will be though.

I don't have too much faith in Greek planning restrictions either.

Still, looking on the bright side  there is plenty of space in the area one would have thought.

I agree. I think It would spoil Plakias. Seeing  the north-east side of the Island when there were only a few villages/towns and Malia was covered in Banana  plantations and then Rapidly grow in size in just a matter of a few years, you would've thought the Greeks had learnt their lesson  . Keep Plakias traditional,  I hope it doesn't turn into another Ag Nik!

I'd also like to add that if this development brings profit to the locals (by creating more jobs and tourism) then that really is a good thing. However I hope it's not some greedy millionaire contractor aiming to make profit out of the locals-poor wages etc etc...

When we were in plakias in May I asked a few of the locals about the proposed building on the front. Manolis from the Meltemi who now runs the beach bar knew there was going to be apartments built soon, but seemed to think it would be a few years before a big developement went ahead because of the cost of the land. From the looks of the plans on the website it looks pretty damned big to me! I know some of the locals including Yannis from Ostraco's would welcome the extra trade such a developement would bring and who could blame them. I just hope it won't destroy the fantastic atmosphere of the village. When we talked to Adonnis at Mousses you could tell he was a little concerned about any future developements on the front. He didn't want the place to lose its charm. I think its inevitable things will change eventually. Best make the most of it now, we're already planning our next trip. Anybody reading this in town say hello to Yannis(ostaco's) and Spiros Pipi(from Talos). Have a drink with Manolis at the beach bar and have a raki or three with the boys in Mousses. Also say hi to Ostraco. We met him in May and I've got a nice photo to prove it. I'll post it if I ever find out how to!  ....Yammas

I expected some building planns in that area...but also I had never seen anything of it yet. Has anybody found any other sites where they mention this project. I requested info on this project on this particular site...have not received any answer though....

I am Dutch. From Amsterdam.
After 12 years of summer holidays in Plakias.
This Year I have started, together with my twinn-brother Erik, father Rein and mother Meta a diving school in Plakias: Dive Together Crete.

You could try www.plakias.com, which I found by accident a couple of days ago.

We returned last night from two weeks in Plakias during which we called in at Georgeopolis on the North coast, between Rethymno and Hania.

The heart of Georgeopolis is solid with cafes, trinket shops and estate agents and the surroundings are a desert of apartments like those planned here.

In my view, this is the beginning of the end for Plakias as we know it and it makes me depressed.

It´s a nightmare! Maybe some officials of the Finikas area would be interested in the results of a quote like "Will you visit Plakias again if this plans come true?"
Who is the investor? Seems to be a British Company? Or is it the Alianthos-Group - then we may ask ourselves if we should frequent their hotels, car-rentals and "the train" in future...

Marianne (of the Alianthos train) told us of a new development of apartment to be built at Souda (Sweetwater).  Are these the same ones as mentioned on this site, or are there separate plans?  Does anyone know?
