Holiday Companies / Re: Les' replacement

Unfortunately, it is no April Fool.  The good folk of Chania will be benefitting from his humour.  The replacement has a hard act to follow, but let's all be welcoming and give him or her a chance.

No Souvlaki House and no Les - what are things coming to in Plakias!  It is good to see from the webcam that at least the sun still shines in Plakias.

I had heard that the Souvlaki House was being demolished, along with the outside space for the supermarket, but the grim reality is quite shocking!

However, I'm really pleased to hear that they are opening up elsewhere.  Any news where?  It won't be the same if you can't sit on the road in the evening with the traffic squeezing by.

We stay at Costa Chrysoula and I fear the widening of the intersection will actually make the corner more dangerous, as cars may come around the corner faster.  That's progress for you.

It looks like Manchester in Plakias today - that is looking at the weather.  The similarity stops there.

Happy New Year, and thoughts for all those who are starting out the new year in less than happy circumstances.

I'm counting my blessings and looking forward to Plakias in August - see you there, Dave&Les.  You will be around Plakias long enough to meet just about everyone on this forum!

Plakias / Booked for 2016
« on: January 02, 2016, 08:03:50 PM »
Hello and Happy New Year!

The Arnaki family plus one will be back in Plakias in August 2016.  We are going from Manchester and the prices this year are a bit eye-watering, but I found I couldn't do it independently any cheaper.  Not long before we are no longer tied to school holidays....

I did get my loyalty discount which amounted to a grand total of ..... £12!  It represents a contribution towards a meal out for us I suppose, but not a huge discount on a holiday for four!

Top tip: if you don't like arriving at 5am and hanging around roomless on the final day - Olympic website shows only one flight from Manchester leaving at around 1800hrs from Manchester and departing from Heraklion at about 0100hrs, with Germania.  However, if you phone to book, there is a Germania day flight, currently at £10pp more.

The sea looks a bit rough today, even if not as dramatic as the circumstances that Jackie reported!  Still, I'd rather be in Plakias than here - looking in on the webcam....

We were there for the last week of the (Olympic) season two years ago and had glorious weather with lovely swims from the almost-empty beach.  I hope it picks up for people out there now.

I love interesting wildlife (so long as it is not in my bed or my food).  I've only seen hummingbird hawkmoths in the past.  I'll have to look out for the oleander version.

I had a close encounter with a very mean looking spider on our balcony in Costa Chryssoula - I haven't found a picture of it when I've searched the internet to try to identify it, but I am sure I have not found a completely new species, so it must be there somewhere.

The souvlaki hut is To Obelisterio (spelling?), and does great gyros. The grill house you mention is on the front on the stretch between Livikon and Lamon. It is always busy with Greeks and is good by all accounts. I haven't eaten there, more to do with a high step (I'm disabled) than the food or ambiance. It looks cheap and cheerful.

Enjoy - I've had my Plakias allocation this year, sadly.

enjoyed all the times in Kyma, Antonis Place, Harakas, Lyseos and especially my room at Stella Studios.

Hi Barny,

Sorry we didn't manage to meet up.  It seems that you go to the places we don't, and vice versa!  Each to his or her own.  The "trouble" is that there are more than enough tavernas to go round for a week

We don't usually go so early in August, usually the last two weeks, so were expecting it to be really busy.  However, although the beach was pretty busy during the day, partly due to bus trips stopping off, we were surprised that the Far End and Plakias itself weren't busier.  We often had the place almost to ourselves at 9.00 or 9.30, even at 10.00 on day.

A week without wind was bliss, even if that meant the weather was very hot!

I quite enjoyed eating and drinking in the proper outdoors at the harbour tavernas and bars, but it is not sustainable when the Plakias wind blows, or the weather is chillier at the beginning and end of season.

Enjoy your holidays those who are still waiting.

We are here now, and Elena is still running tours. She has a minibus, and the tours go to different places than the big bus tours.

Thanks. I'm glad it's only the website. They are lovely people and we've had some great trips.  Our query will wait until we get there.

Plakias / Elena Tours
« on: July 31, 2015, 10:00:50 PM »
Hi,

I want to get in touch with Elena Tours, but their website does not seem to be working.  Can anyone in Plakias confirm whether they are still up and running please?  They are based on the right hand side of the road beside the Souvlaki House (with your back to the sea).

Many thanks

PlakChat / Re: Parking in Plakias
« on: June 22, 2015, 12:49:40 PM »

As I'm disabled Dave asked a policeman if we could park using my blue badge but he said no, only in a disabled bay & as there are no disabled bays in Plakias, that was it we had to abide by the rules but he said if you do get a ticket take it to Rethymnon traffic police with the blue badge & they would tear up the ticket!! (only in Greece)

Here is some useful information about using the blue badge in other EU countries.  http://www.theaa.com/public_affairs/reports/blue_badge_abroad.pdf.  It depends on how you interpret: "Do not park on roads where parking is prohibited" and "In most areas you may park without time limit on roads where parking is free but restricted by time."

From what you originally said, parking is restricted to 15 minutes, but you don't want a ticket or a trip to Rethymno, it sounds as if it is best to do as you are told.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Paligremnos
« on: June 16, 2015, 01:36:52 PM »
We've eaten at Paligremnos at least once every time we have visited.  It used to be for lunch when we set up ourselves up on the beach with the tent when our daughter was small.

Last year we had a great, raki-filled evening with our friends who stay there, which will no doubt be repeated when we visit again in August.

It is a shame they no longer have the music night.  At least I have the CD for memories still.
