Happy holidays everyone! I have to wait until August, but the wait will be worth it.

Plakias / Re: Gavdos
« on: April 14, 2017, 03:56:45 PM »
A few years ago a ferry was brought in which sat in the new harbour waiting to sort out paperwork that never came through. That was intended to go to Gavdos.

Ask at Smerna Bar. There is a trip advertised on the small harbour but when we enquired, we were told that it needed something like 15 people (and calm weather I expect).

Turn up to Plakias in hope rather than expectation. Otherwise do as Hugo says and look at the main ferry timetable.  Please report back if you manage the trip.

And it's happening again! Flight originally 6.15am from Manchester, now moved to 8.15am, still with Enter Air. It's not a major change and at least means we won't have a ridiculously early departure from Plakias for the mystery bus tour back to the airport.

Holiday Companies / Re: Olympic Loyalty Bonus (or not)
« on: February 07, 2017, 11:07:14 AM »
I recently booked a holiday to Plakias with Olympic and asked about the loyalty scheme they used to have. I was told that they hope to introduce another scheme shortly. I thought the news might interest people here, if it does come about.

I'm booked for August from Manchester, with transfers.  As far as I can tell from Manchester it is only the ASLFrance and EnterAir flights that have transfers - and I assumed that's because they are Olympic's own charters. I think I would go independently if there were no coach - and don't really mind the magical mystery tour - due to additional cost of taxi (and cost and wrecked nerves of hiring a car).  So I really hope that there is a transfer when summer rolls around.

I was booking online but I had to phone up because the site crashed when I went to the final stage.  The price the nice man gave me was about £200 more than the price I had online. I took a quick screen shot in case I had to argue; fortunately his online search brought up the same price as I had; it was already top of our budget and I wouldn't have paid any more, even for Plakias.  It's happened before. Very odd.

PlakChat / Re: What is it like in Plakias in November?
« on: November 13, 2016, 03:54:22 PM »
We had a lovely holiday at the end of October once.  Usually it is isn't possible to get away to Greece at October half-term (sorry being very parochial - I should say the time when most English schools have half-term).  After this year we won't be limited to school holidays, but for the sake of others, it would be good if the last package flight back could be after the half-term holidays.  After that I think that the locals deserve to enjoy the beach, the sea and the weather to themselves. They need a break too.

Lucky you!  I have been to Katelios twice and Skala once.  When we went to Skala it was quite small, but has grown into a large resort now by comparison.  Perhaps my view is coloured by the fact I had seen it much smaller.

Katelios I love, and we went in 2002ish and 2013ish.  There have been only a few changes in that time.  It remains small, with a good number of tavernas, several on the beachside.  The accommodation is all low rise and spread out, so it feels green and airy.  The resort itself is fairly flat but surrounded by hills.  The beach isn't much to write home about, but there is a small harbour.  There is a clifftop walk over to the next beach, where turtles nest.  I am disabled and we didn't hire a car, so this is out of the question for me.  If you are a Far Ender, opportunities in the Katelios area are not great.  There is a bay in Skala which is/was naturist, but last time we went (on a day out from Katelios), cliff and beach erosion made it impossible to get round without swimming. I think the turtle beach may have opportunities, but don't take my word for it.

There were several buses from Katelios when we went first time, but more recently buses were extremely rare and at the wrong time.  We went on an organised coach trip to Skala for about 7E per person (I think).  Apart from that we wandered in the local area. We were there at half-term in May, but in high season I understand there is a water taxi to Skala and Poros and boat trips out.  Otherwise, a car would be very useful.

This website has useful information and a walkabout:  http://www.justkefalonia.co.uk/katelios.asp

We stayed at Efrosini, which are lovely apartments with large balconies, large rooms, well equipped with a large pool.  It also has lots of cats but we managed to show them that they weren't welcome and they just walk over our patio and on the next one, giving us a look of disdain.  The feeling was mutual.

Katelios is a small, quiet, laid-back resort with plenty of good restaurants and a few bars, and good walking opportunities.

On the other hand, a second trip to Plakias isn't a bad idea!

Plakias / Re: The "real Donutman" passed away.

Hi mandmshow,

Just so you don't get a shock if you go back next year, and are served doughnuts by the same person as this year, the "real" doughnut man became too ill to continue a few years ago and had to give up.  The current doughnut man you would have met this summer is a relative, I believe, and I assume is still alive and well.

Saddened to hear the news.  We had been missing his cheeky comments ever since he had to stop a few years ago.  Rest in peace.

We've only once had a four hour transfer. We've also been lucky enough to be given a taxi both ways when we went late in the season. I've found that the trip back does usually tend to be longer than on arrival. We landed early today back in Manchester. I think they must over estimate the time to avoid having late arrivals and consequent compensation issues. Funny and a bit scary that the flight was absent without a trace! How odd.

Yes, sadly just got back. The flight came into Heraklion on time and we were boarded and away on time. Great flight, lovely informative captain. I can't say anything against them, except that they've flown me back to reality, a pile of washing and work tomorrow!

By the way the transfer was 3 hrs 15 mins each way.

Have a lovely holiday when it comes.

Holiday Companies / Re: Olympic rep saga
« on: August 27, 2016, 03:02:58 PM »
Actually, Les is currently the rep for Plakias on an emergency, part-time basis, as yet another rep has been and gone. He is doing this along with his main job in Agia Marina. There have been some communication problems between Olympic and the accommodation providers. Kostas was told a couple were here for a week, so allocated us their room. When we arrived, there was great concern that they had gone off for the day without vacating the room. However, when they returned it turned out they were here for two weeks. I have also heard that this week people turned up at Dora only to find that Olympic hadn't told Dora that they were coming! I assume this communication problem is to do with main office, rather than Les, but it all feels very shambolic.

If you have any specific accommodation requests, I'd advise you to contact Kosta Chryssoula direct. They have a website.

So the saga continues....

Plakias / Re: Water sports
« on: August 20, 2016, 04:27:12 PM »
Your eyes were not deceiving you. There are three jet skis I think. There are buoys out in attempt to keep swimmers and jet skiers apart, but this limits the free water for swimmers, and the jets circle round in the small harbour, close to boats. I agree that it doesn't seem compatible with blue flag staus. However I suppose people are trying to make money in difficult times. The only problem is that it can be self defeating, if the original customers take against it and go elsewhere. I'm trying not to feel like an old fuddy duddy, but I think water sports are more suited to Damnoni.

Such is progress.

Gossip / Re: This time yesterday

I was here yesterday, and I'm still here today - yay!

We ate lunch at Antonis a couple of days ago. Lovely spinach omelette for me, and proper retsina by the carafe. Yes, it's the first taverna on the beach road once you're beyond the village. No wind at the moment, so a perfect spot.

What's so good about duty free?  At the moment people can bring back pretty much as much as they can pack, and bought "in resort" is usually cheaper than Duty Free ever was.  There would be limits on how much could be taken duty free.  I see it as just one more trolley to go up and down the plane when you want to sleep or go to the toilet!  But then I'm a curmudgeon (and not a smoker).
