Plakias / hello from Canada
« on: April 01, 2006, 03:57:57 PM »
Hi  guys
sorry its been soooooooo long since I posted.

hectic life travelling here thereand everywhere since
I married last april 9th in las vegas.

have spent nine weeks in my future home of naples florida
since last october.

I  really like naples but I LOVE  souda bay  to the west of plakias.

my american bride  Jules and myself had a lovely drive from hania
to souda, we came  via  selia, to show her the view.

had a lovely week , it was 5 years exactly since my brother Thomas
was tragically lost to us while he journeyed from
the secret nest  to  Iraklion.

Julie and myself laid a memory of Tom on the sisses road where the
catostrophe occured
With the  marvellous help of Toms friends in the area we arranged for a
touching stone memorial which overlooks  souda bay.

it is just metres west of souda mare hotel.

if you are passing take a few minutes to sit and toast
'THE MANCHESTER RAMBLER"   Thomas  J Murney

you can sit on the stone ledge and even leave  mythos in place.

all the best

Roger Murney   Toronto  Canada

soon to be  us resident in Naples florida

but will always think of  SOUDA.

ON A CRUISE THAT DOES GREEK ISLES THIS AUGUST BUT NO  KRITI.
will  ask captain when we are close to  the enchanted isle.

my best wishes
to all at souda mare hotel, gallini tavern, secret nest, etc etc

Zak  I am sorry that we missed each other last July
hope you and Nicholas are well.

Stellios  Kaoudis will phone you in next week

cheers   red d

HEY  UP  B L
just been lazing with a few reptiles in the everglades florida.
They were smacking their chops at the thought of moi.
anyhow sorry bout your AA flight.
My American wife and  I , were in Athens and flew to Hania
in late July.
It  was a very pleasant and friendly flight
compared to our BA  flight  Toronto to  Heathrow
and our not so happy , OLYMPIC  heathrow to athens.
we paid top dollar for the 2 long flights
but our AA  to Kriti  from Athena  was  very reasonable.
and we got  time for  a drink and snack.
Have just flown  West JET  fro florida to toronto today.
really super flight and crew plus live satelite tv
watched the l/poool  v chelski game live on my personal screen.
it wasabout  175 pounds return flight.

NOW  last year  I was over in europe and had the misfortune to
book one of your summer package flights to
Iraklion from gatwick  with brittania.
what shit you  Brits put up with, snarly flight attendants
excessive price for a COFFEE??
tHAT  was my second package flight from UK to  Kritii
never  EVER  AGAIN would I subject myself to this
cattle herded degredation.
now I am born and bred in England  but way back in 1975
after many trips abroad  I decided it was time to lleave
the so called  "green and pleasant"
green I can agree with that but pleasant ??  arf

anyhow  I  am moving down to Naples florida very soon.
but will still keep in touch and visit plakias.

maybe next summer we have a group of 20  cruising
greek isles fro m venice and back
will check if aegean fly from venice and hopefully spend a week
with my  friends in plakias.

roger murney   toronto      yammas

ps perhaps its a good idea to book just from brum on aegean ??

Plakias / Plakias in the 80s

Hello all,

I am new to the forum, but not Plakias!  I thought I would drop a line or two and gather some info re Plakia and intoduce myself a little bit.

I first arrived in Plakias in 1983..Myself and my friend Ian walked there from Rethymnon!....we then walked to Agia Galii via Spili, then got lost and ended up in Lasithi!

I last visited Plakias in 2002 as you may gather things had changed dramatically, however, it still had that dramatic beauty and lovely feeling of isolation, added to that most of the Cretans in Plakias come from Sphakian origins and they are renowned for their, shall we say indomitable spirit!

I remember the Youth Hostel being in Mirthios and there was little else but a couple of tavernas in Plakias, however, I did meet my first Greek Scorpion there - sleeping snugly in my boot.

Anyone else who remembers that Idyllic era please share your memories with me.

Hello!  I visited Plakias two times in the 1980's -- 1986 and again in 1988.  Sadly I have not returned, though I have never stopped dreaming of Plakias and the magical time I spent there.  I stumbled across this forum while trying to track down a Plakias local -- Stellios Kaudis.   If any of you run across him please tell him that Terri from Seattle (and the 80's!) says hello.  I will definitely return to this forum when I have more computer time!

was lovely to see all my brothers old mates from last 25 years.

had a couple of top nights'
first the semi final and then greece winning it all.

arranged for my brothers memorial stone to be carved by
a rethmynon stone mason. hope to have it placed overlooking souda this year.

had a graet day in the mountains with stellios kouda,
he showed me lots of out of the way places, and was instrumental
in arranging for this stone carved memorial.  thanks Stellios.

btw  avoid rethmynon in the near future
USA are taking over track area at university for their team

will be security nightmare

Susan

c,est la vie

tried chatting once with guys on here
but to no avail, got a impression they ignored my connection.
like plakias is just fun in the sun,not REAL LIFE.
mountain men coming down to the ocean to amake a easier living
of  touristas.

reckon I know more about the way life ticks
but thats for me to    enjoy and find comfort.

yeah sad but inspiring story.

the "TOTAL CATASTROPHE"

Kasantzakis  knew the ryhtm of life
so as I said theres more to life  than

bars and beer!!
but I love that too,

thxs for your reply  cheers roger

seems a few established on here were worried
that they maybe upset the locals by talking with me

sad misguided souls
locals have no  probs with me  .
will be among them sooner or later.

the place is not in your eyes, its letting the "penny drop"

I witnessed  a major thunderstorm over gavdos last may 2003.
it was my last evening in Souda before retuning to Canada.

I was for many reasons , to visit the place and  people
who my brother loved and vice verca.

he died on route from plakias to iraklion in 2000,
in a freak taxi crash.

was there for thr trial of all concerned last may 2003.
Zak who was a good friend of my brother ,
was the taxi driver, after the trial he drove me from iraklion to souda mar hotel.

we are very connected now and I look fwd to seeing Zak and his lovely
little boy Nikolai ,when I arrive in late june.

thankfully the judgr ruled 100percent guilt to the truck involved,

so I scattered my parents ashes on stormy souda that night.
they both passed after Toms tragedy.

so now they are together in souda  = deep water.

had a few rakis with my brothers close friend Stellios Kaoudis
has we sat in his garden on the hillside just above gallini tavern.

thats what I love about KRITI
the people are loyal and hardy,
are very straight, luckily I have passed the test.

so that was a big storm that blew in from gavdos.

next day  ZAK picked me up at dawn .,then drove me to Iraklion
I was on hellas high speed for a visit to santorini then on to see the
PARTHENON.

what a nightmare on that ferry ,never again
was not feeling so hot after a night of  CRETAN music & hospitality,

had a few RAKIS  with Stellios, Manolis of Gallini, and mihalis of souda mare.

then it was asuprise when Zak drove me ,he was supposed to be away.
anyhow he slowed to a halt where Tom died,
I did not ask him to do it ,but it was very spiritual between us.

we had already had the shock of persomnal tragedy the month before.

my mother and Zaks   English wife  Kelly
were both cremated in england on the same day and Hour,

coincidecnce is very strange.

so souda is where my heart will always be.
I hope to spend many sunsets there when I retire
counting the hrs

cheers roger murney   toronto canada
will be there  at souda mar hotel june 27 to july 7th

always at the gallini for lunch.

hope to chat with any who are there at same time
like to get into town in the evening for a couple of brews

cheers roger murney

PlakChat / Sad news
« on: May 03, 2003, 06:57:18 PM »
I am so sad to hear this tragic news
please pass on my sympathies to Zak and his son.
there is a connection between Zak and myself.
sadly he was the last person to see my brother Thomas alive in july 2000.
Myself and my parents who have recently died
never held any bad thoughts toward Zak.
I was in Plakias july 2001
and we passed at the secret nest.
I let his relatives know that he could speak to me anytime
but that I understood his difficult position.
I will be in plakias on may 21 .
we both have lost so much lately .
my mom and dad were shattered by my brothers death
and never overcame the shocking news,
so now I am bringing their ashes to souda
Zak can meet me whenever he chooses
it will be good for him to hear that I have
no bitterness toward him .
and that my heart is sad for their tragic loss

astri  mi  mellonta {excusespelling}
stars dont be angry at me
