Holiday Companies / Bargain Package
« on: May 08, 2007, 04:52:11 PM »
Yes they are selling quick, as of todays date there are only the larger rooms (2/3) left, and the price has risen a bit to £449 for 2 people. Still a good price, I hope I don't water down my Mythos by crying too much.

If anyone is considering a last minute to Plakias, try the Olympic web site ( I know about the Transfers!)
I cannot go myself, but I nearly cried when I saw 2 weeks self catering at the Costas Chryssoula, leaving Gatwick on 5th. June, (good flight), for just £393 PER COUPLE!!!!! Yes under £200 each, including all taxes, duties transfers etc.
GRAB it while you can, and have a Mythos for me when you get there, and say hello (yassou) to Babis at the Sirokko.

Holiday Companies / Why so expensive in September?
« on: August 11, 2006, 07:57:33 PM »
Just a quick addition to my topic - of note to anyone not yet booked for September 26th. 2006 at the Kostas Chrysoulla, Olympic web site has now DROPPED their prices!!!! 1 week self catering, flying from Gatwick on the 09.00 Monarch flight, for 2 people to the Kostas Chrysoulla appts. is now £450! (£225 each, all taxes and sircharges included).
Should be a busy week! Hope they got enough Mythos in Plakias to satisfy the thirsty throng.

Holiday Companies / Why so expensive in September?
« on: June 28, 2006, 05:55:59 PM »
We spent a wonderful 2 weeks in Plakias in June 2005, and were considering a return visit (rare for us) in September 2006. We have been suprised (should that be horrified) by the price Olympic and Kosmar want for 1 week on 26th. Sept. to the Kostas Chrysoulla,  £700 for 2! We only paid slightly more than that for 2 weeks in June, both here and in Lefkada (Lefkas). What is the problem? Is it anything to do with ALL the forum members going out at the same time, (will there be room at the Livicon/Ostracos etc.,)(Will the Mythos supply be sufficient?) Why is it so expensive? We would like to meet up again with Babbis and his Dad from the Sirocco, and watch the sun go down over Souda Bay as we eat (and drink) our meal.
Please help an impoverished (old) couple

Plakias / 2006 season in Plakias
« on: June 26, 2006, 07:41:42 PM »
The Train has gone? finished? to be no more? - SHAME - My wife and I enjoyed the evening trips to Mirtios, and also the day trips out, they were a relaxing, peaceful way to enjoy the countryside without the exertion of walking. The Monastery trip was excellent, especially the lunch stop in Lefkogia, we were planning to do the trip again, and stay on at the village taverna for an extended lunch, taking a taxi back to Plakias when we had emptied the place of Mythos, house wine and ouzo.
Is there an appeals system? Can we get the train back?
Perhaps there is a case for a vote on the forums to see what the overall view of the train is.
Untill September

PlakChat / New to the Forum....

Bicycles? Nooo, get a Motor John! A motorcycle or (at least) a scooter, pedalling uses up too much Mythos!
Good luck with the intended move, if this forum is anything to go by, you will have a crowd of Brits following you out there!

Holiday Companies / Is September 26 06 a good time in Plakias?
« on: February 23, 2006, 10:09:19 PM »
We went to Plakias last June and LOVED it, just as expectedfom the posts on this forum, but now are considering a cheap return visit, if only to go to the Sirocco Taverna and continue our friendship with Babis and his father. Is this a good time to go? What abut the wind? (No,not the beans)Raki Festival? (although I love Ouzo) Will the weather be good? Do we need a swiming pool? Went to the Costas Chtysoulla last time and found it good for our needs (Close to Tavernas and Beach) Any advice apreciated, will buy youa Mythos in return for advice! Throw in a Gyros for discount info!

I agree, last year independently was a little more expensive than First Choice could do for us. However lack of the tortuous transfer makes up for that

the worst i ever had was a half hour trip that took four hours because there was a drop every mile down the road  :'(

Hi, we have just got back and would like to warn everyone travelling with the tour operators that the transfer took nearly 4 hours!!! we stopped at bali and every place in and outside of rethymnon(at least it felt like we did!)including a small hotel near the harbour. The transfer was on a double deck coach which had no end of problems getting into and out again of many of the places.Although I undersatnd the economics of it, it was horrendous so be prepared and make sure you have food and drink before you leave the airport.

Marmaliser, you must have been on the same Olympic transfer as my wife and myself, June 7th. We arrived on the Gatwick flight, and yes, it was 4 hours, made worse by the new driver who didn't know where he was going, we sailed past one big Hotel ouside Rethymnon and reversed back along the dual carriageway! BUT I understand others who had arrived on earlier flights had already spent over 1 to 1 and half hours on the coach waiting for the Gatwick flight before the 4 hour journey started.
The return to the airport was  not as bad, except for the fact the Olympic rep deliberately lied to everyone by stating that the coach was going direct to the airport, when she knew full well that there were several pick-ups to be made, but, as she was not travelling on the coach, she would not have to put up with the complaints about lying. I will not be travelling with Olympic EVER again, and will pay more to another operator, or go independently just to hit Olympic where it hurts, in the profits!

Plakias / train timetable
« on: June 23, 2005, 07:58:18 PM »
Hi, Just returned from Plakias 21st June, GREAT time!
Alianthos Express time table: (Available from the stop opposite the Forum)
Mirthios every evening, leaves at 19.00, returm leaves Mirthios at 22.00, but this is a later timetable, when we were there it left at 21.30. 5€ return.

Monday AND Friday - Donkey Sanctuary 10.00 from Plakias, then on to Damnoni, return at 13.45. 10€
Tuesday AND Sunday - Back and forth to Damnoni and Souda Bay a couple of times each way, 5€ Return, but check with the driver what time you are returning, he will come and pick you up, possibly in his own car if low numbers don't warrant the use of the Train.
Wednesday - Preveli Monastery, 10.00 Plakias, Return at 16.00, 15€, Lunch at Taverna Stelios in Lefkogia, not included in fare, but 1 litre of wine is 4€, and an Ouzo 1€, who needs to eat?
Thursday - Walks and villages, Plakias @ 10.00, return @16.00, 15€. Kotsigou Gorge walk, lunch in Taverna by gorge
Saturday- Kourtaliotis Gorge and waterfalls, Museum of Papa Michali in Asomatos. Lunch in Lefkogia.

We did the Mirthios evening and the Preveli Monastery, an excellent way to see, smell and touch the countryside, nearly wore out the video camera! At about 15Mph gives you time to appreciate it all.
Great Place but see my later posting about the NIGHTMARE Olympic transfers to and from Heraklion airport

Where to stay / design your own accomodation
« on: April 10, 2005, 02:59:42 PM »
It's great to hear of someone prepared to make the move abroad, good luck with the venture, my wife and I would certainly be interested in booking when it is all finished (the british definition of finished, not the Greek!)
A swimming pool to cool off in is a definate need, as is Air Conditioning, a MUST HAVE, although we are willing to pay for the use, sleeping at night in the summer without A/c would be impossible, not to mention the intrusion of mosquitoes and other bugs.
Good luck!

Where to stay / Kostas-Chrysoulla Studios
« on: February 06, 2005, 12:49:30 PM »
Thanks for the responses, deal done, will be arriving in Plakias 7th. June, flight from Gatwick at 09.00, civilised travel!
Booked with Olympic, brochure says 5 units at Kostas Chrysoulla, but in the old FC brochure it says 42 units, so it isn't as small as I thought, but hten that explains how and why I can get rolls and coffee for breakfast.
Only 4 months to go so I will now be taking notes from the forum for the best places to eat & drink, but on first glance there doesn't appear to be any bad choices in Plakias - could this be paradise found? Roll on June!

Trying to book a 2 week holiday to Plakias in June 05 (because of good reports as a quiet, Cretan resort) but can anyone quickly tell me if these studios are any good? Where do I get breakfast?
Thanks

Holiday Companies / Too Late to Book?
« on: January 27, 2005, 05:49:32 PM »
Just tried to book the Lamon Aparthotel for June 7th. with Kosmar - plane seats all gone! We like Crete, and were hoping to find a quiet Cretan village and spend 2 weeks sunbathing and eating and drinking Cretan style (not the Raki!)
Where else can we go? or who else is there that goes to Plakias? Should we go independantly and book a flight, Taxi and try to book the Lamon over the phone?
Any help appreciated.
