Plakias / Re: Just Returned

I don't like the way this thread is going.  Can you please keep your derogatory comments/opinions to yourselves.  Doubt you'd be brave enough to say anything to the lady herself and doubt she would care anyway.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Lysseos
« on: June 08, 2013, 09:06:24 AM »
Again I don't get the comment.  Never once heard a ping in all the years I have frequented the restaurant.  It is such a tightly run ship with Lito at the helm that there is no need to attract the waiting staff's attention - they spend most of the time in and out of the kitchen anyway with Lito front of house.  And if a dish is ready to go out and staff busy elsewhere Lucas the chef will bring it out personally.  They take great pride in what they serve.

Anyway I've had my say and would suggest people give it a go and judge for themselves.

Sorry don't get your comments.  Near the kitchen where exactly?

I can assure everyone that the food in Lysseos is freshly sourced and prepared and of the highest quality.

Gossip / Re: Severe drought predicted 2013

Yes the middle of May was very odd.  I wouldn't say it was bad just very unsettled - no 2 days the same.  Got caught in the storm walking between Damnoni and Plakias - had to hang my euros up to dry!!

Chill out indeed!  I remember the days when there were no beds on any of the beaches in and around Plakias and we all survived.  Much better if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure Lysseos offers vegetarian versions of dishes on the menu.  Certainly worth asking as the food in Lysseos is the best I'd say!

Is the Gavdos ferry up and running,or not? Anyone know?????    Alex

I understand from the Sfakia forum that the larger Gavdos ferry supposed to be running from the new Plakias harbour never got started due to non compliance with regulations. No idea about the local smaller trips from Plakias

I found this on the web site of Gavdos-Star:

"ANNOUNCEMENT
We would like to inform our dear passengers that PS Gavdos Star is ending, with immidiate effect,
it's ferry service from Plakias to Gavdos.
We are sorry for any incovenince caused and we thank you for your understanding."

O well, Thanks Kerstin, and john, for your help....Alex

just get Fran on a lilo when the wind is blowing and she'll soon get there!

Anyone been to Plaka, how far is it from Plakias, Alex
Was there about 20 years ago when staying in Elounda.  It's up on the north east a couple of hours or so beyond Herklion.

Are you thinking of banishing Fran to Spinalonga?

Hi Alex, not much choice from Scotland this year as far as I can see.  Best I can see is Tuesday 2nd June for around 280 each.  We're out on the 4th but the price for this seems to have gone up to over 500 each.

If i find anything else i'll give you a shout.

Holiday Companies / Flight or Flight ?

Hello all, I just looked on the Olympic site for a flight only, next July. They can do a flight for me on a Monarch for £359. I then looked on the Monarch site and the same flight is £10 cheaper but you have to pay it all at once. In view of all that is going on at the moment could anyone advise as to the safer bet? And I know it's Monday ! but.....

                            Barny.

have you tried flythomascook.com?

I've managed to get Glasgow Heraklion next June for £300.  More than I'm used to paying but by far the best I could find (from Glasgow anyway).

I see XL airways have gone into administration this morning.
I hope all those affected can get alternative flights sorted out quickly.

One outcome is that flights into Crete next year are likely to be more expensive.

Didn't George travel out on XL? Hope he gets sorted out OK.

I have been watching the situation since Barclays declined to extend their facilities for XL. Managed to book an Olympic holiday with cheapo room in Malia starting next Friday. We will just tell the guide we are not using the accommodation and drive down to Plakias. Red eye flights with Monarch - ho hum.

Flights with Sleazyjet were over 400 pounds more expensive than the package holiday    They couldn't be taking advantage could they?

I've had a narrow escape - as an independent traveller I've used xl.com for flights to crete for last 4 or 5 years and had it not been for a 50th birthday trip to USA this year I'd have been caught up too for sure.  As it is I'll need to claim the flight booked for next June back on my credit card.  Thoughts go to all those who are affected.

I too phoned XL today.  Tickets with 15kg allowance have been sent to me but they will reissue at 20kg.  Seems to be that they will try and get away with the 15kg allowance if they can, but change it on the customer's demand if the booking was on the old basis.

So worth a phone call (I'd only a couple of minutes to wait).

Ian

I usually weigh in at around 12kg  - down side is that my hand luggage has lots of heavy stuff in it  and I'm wearing more clothes than I would normally
Got the ok today for 20k as it was booked before January.  Alex
Good news Alex, that's Fran's smalls taken care of!

see you
