Title: What I'd like is...
Post by: George on February 07, 2006, 01:18:49 PM
We all know want we like about Plakias and we all comment on the good, the bad and the ugly at times, but is there anything missing that you would like to see. Perhaps more of what's already there, or something completely new?
We've discussed the likes of Macdonalds, and the thought's of speeding bananas being dragged around the bay was screamed at by all, so let's not go there.

In my opinion, there's not much missing or, that could be improved.
My only thought's were that there could be more 'authentic' local bars and tavernas, not that there's anything wrong with the ones that are there.

As it's quiet at the moment, I thought this might be a good idea for discussion, there again...

A weekly market would be fine. With fruits, herbs, raki, wine from local farmers, fish and meat,  arts and crafts. And maybe a small dancehall with the right music for old men like me...    But we didn't miss much at all yet and the more things they add the more we fear that it will change the place in a way we will not like so much... For our childrens welfare we were sometimes happy to find the doctor and the pharmacy right in town.

I'd like to see a permanent site, as well as the beach outlet for Lefteris, the Donut Man.
As a far ender  , I tend to leave the beach before he gets to it, and I get withdrawal symtoms   when I don't get my extra vitamins  .

Are you sure it's nothing to do with the Viagra effect?

Ti, ti, ti;
Donut Man?  Please tell me what I've been missing and when.  I have been to Plakias for the past 4 years now, twice a year, June and September and have never seen the Donut Man.  We normally go to either Souda Bay (which I love) or Shinaria (the scenery on the way is stunning) for our daily swim, although we have also spent time at Plakias beach.  Where is he located?

I agree, and it would be good to see more watermelons on sale, right off the pick-up truck.

I would also like Greek elections to be held more often, as the mobile loudspeakers liven up the place. (just joking)

I quote (free translated) from a Dutch travel magazine “Reizen” February 06:

Quote:
Plakias:
Without doubt we stayed there much too short for an honest opinion, however when we say “tourist train”, you know enough……………
Festos is on top of the hill. We leave the archaeological site and drive in the direction of Plakias. No “concrete” tourism however empty beer tins on the beach, which do reveal our worst expectations.  ……………………..
Unquote

Conclusion:
Plakias needs following improvements:
No litter on the beach: I.e.: Littering tourists should be stripped naked and deported to the far end.
Tourist train to be camouflaged   (preferably by olive tree branches)

The only remarks we have:
the hardness of the Cretan mattresses. Slightly softer is preferred.
sometimes an electric kettle, a shower hook, and
dry toiletpaper after a shower.

the one thing I'd love to added to Plakias is to be linked to the south coast ferry route

at present it runs from paleohora, souyia, agia roumelli, loutro, spakia

IMHO it would be great for the town

maybe it could stop at Frangokastello as well.

Failing that, they should reinstate the bus to sphakia.

Agreed - We've only used the train a few times but found it an interesting and relaxing way to travel. A Poll would be interseting - I'm sure everyone has an opinion on it.

What are you guys on, I'd been away for four years and the fountain was the first thing I noticed as I got off the bus 2 years ago. You cannot miss it (although, that's not true, obviously) it's directly opposite the Forum by the bridge.
Looks pretty, but it is a bit of a joke when the wind gets up. The water goes everywhere but where it should!

and as for the abstract wall....its anybodys guess if i notice it.......i'll probably be typing in 3 years "what abstract wall" i'll blame it on my age

yes - not a patch on the meltemi in my opinion.  different atmosphere and music - or maybe i'm getting to old.  we only ever went a few nights and that was enough for me - we spent more time going between the ostraco, smerna and the beach bar

Been the last couple of weekends.  Had a great time.  It was mainly Greeks in there with a lot of greek music being played, which I now prefer.  Not sure what is like out of August, I know Meltemi got very 'Greek' at this time as well.

Guess where you're taking me on Saturday night Ali!
I certainly agree with you about Greek music, there is a really good current pop scene in Greece, which is great when you get into it - and when you can find the tunes!  Look for artists like Anna Vissi, Sakis Roubas etc.

I was in Finikas on its opening night a few years back - that was a great evening. Went in a few times after, but it was mainly full of drinkers, not dancers, and the atmosphere was totally different from Meltemi.

Now that it has no competition, I'm hoping it will really take off (and it's a shorter walk back my room!). By the way, any dancers are always welcome to warm up upstairs in Ostraco!

I`m an ecstatic wanderer to Plakias for the past 18 or so years, and loved the Meltemi.  However, it sounds like the Finikas is now THE PLACE TO GO.  Was in Plakias in June, but did not see it!   Rather like a fellow contributor to this site who did not see the fountain, I`m putting the cause down to not only raki but wonderful home-made feta in Myrthios!!   Will be wandering to Plakias Youth Hostel in a few weeks`time so please tell me where I can find Finikas!

I think now the Finikas is the ONLY PLACE TO GO, since the Metelmi is closed

Going back to what John said about Greek pop music, I have a few cd's that Pavlos gave me in August but would like to get some more "chart"  hits.
Any idea where i would start to look?
Just sitting here at work playing some now and wish i was there!

Hi Barny
If you go to Rethymnon, go to the car park at the entrance to the old town and facing the archway take a left, there's a good record shop just down on the left hand side.
I recommend 'Orama' by Vasili Salaes amongst others that he's done, not exactly chart stuff but it's puts me in the mood. It was done with Vangelis.
The women who works in there will be very impressed with you when you ask for it.

Sorry Barny, just read this back and you've already been, perhaps next year. You can't get this in the UK!

Being a sad internet shopping and Google freak...
You can buy and download it here (http://www.emusic.com/album/10858/10858070.html).

Or you can get the CD from here (http://www.greekcity.com/music/music5cont.taf?_function=detail&gcvvideo_uid1=1425), shipping is a bit pricey though from Canada.

If you like greek music a little bit off the traditional "tourist sounds" you should have an ear on the great work of "pyx lax" [or: pix lax] one of the most famous modern greek groups and George Dalaras. Together they perform on the live album "Iera Odo".

After his success with Eurovision, Sakis Roubas is worth a listen to - and Anna Vissi has become a favourite with me too.

I was in HMV in Oxford Street a few weeks ago - they have quite a large selection of Greek music - and are usually happy to let you listen to a few tracks before buying (although I do find some of their imports a little expensive)

Also - we did check out Finikas on a saturday night. It was worth the visit! Interesting to see a very local scene, with a good proportion of Greek music being played. There must have been a waiter from every taverna in town there! The music was very loud though - there was no chance to chat. With Meltemi, you could pop outside to give your ears a rest and have a quiet drink and chat, but that's not possible at Finikas.

We walked past what's left of Meltemi several times on the way to Manolis' beach bar. We had several great (and very late) nights there. Manolis is using that building across the road for toilet and storage facilities - one wonders - could this be the next Meltemi? We decided it would be perfect!

What i'd like is to find somewhere in england where i can get hold of some raki!
We ran out last night and Ruth needs her evening "nightcap".
Any ideas anyone, or do i have to go back to Crete?
I found a shop selling Mythos !

george

that's turkish raki, rather than cretan

it's really just like ouzo, it tastes of aniseed and clouds up when mixed with water

i imagine the cretans use the same word as crete was once part of the ottoman empire
