Title: Webcam
Post by: boxerlover on June 05, 2014, 04:22:24 PM
For those of you who cannot get enough of Plakias, you will be delighted to know that two webcams are up and running as from today. One pointing at the far-end and the other at the harbour.

Here are the links

Great - now I won't have to peek at the Chora Sfakion Webcams to get my daily fix!

Thank you! I've been pining for a view of Plakias. Like Daza, I've been looking at Chora Sfakion to get my fix. I enjoy surfing the Greek webcams on Webcams Galore during my lunchtime, particularly watching ferries coming and going in some of the harbours.

The resolution on the Plakias cameras at least means everyone's privacy is protected. Some high quality ones must feel quite invasive.  We won't be able to recognize our friends, or be spotted ourselves, staggering out of Livicon after a beer or three.

Roll on August and our visit to Kostas Chryssoula!

I've been thinking...would it not be an idea to put (links to) the webcams in a more prominent/accessible place: say as a tab at the head of the page (along with Home, Help, FAQ etc.)?

Didn't realise these webcams were there, good views.

Unfortunately the weather station doesn't appear to working at the moment which is very frustrating as I've no idea just how hot it is here at the moment.

Love the new webcams.

Can anybody please confirm that there are sunbeds at the far end this year as usual - can't quite see this far on the webcam. Is the doughnut man still around?

Looking forward to a week in Plakias in the middle of August after 4 days in Siteia and 4 days in Ierapetra.

Hi Jane

The sunbeds are in their usual position and the beach is looking exceptionally clean, thanks to Tollis.

The doughnut man is still making his regular daily visits.

Enjoy your holiday.

Interestingly, despite the waves, there doesn't seem to be much wind.  The trees don't appear to be moving much. Someone out there at the moment may be able to tell us different.

There is an excellent real time weather station at Plakias - http://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/plakias/ (http://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/plakias/) which I think is the one linked on the useful links on this forum. (My ipad bombs out on that link). This is showing not much wind during the last couple of days of rough sea. However a week or so back, before that weather station went down (now up) it showed very strong winds indeed - northerlies with 80kph speeds - perhaps not so unusual for Plakias.

There's not much wind today but the last couple of days a breeze has been coming in shore hence the waves.  Very nice weather at the moment.

It looks as if there is a storm brewing over the village, but bright sunshine at the far end.  I expect the camera is in an inaccessible spot so it's not easy to clean the lens.  I really love having the webcam - even a murky view is better than none at all.

Looking forward to seeing Plakias face to face in a few weeks.

Hi Arnaki - Asked David to get up there and polish it for us all. Sadly I won't be returning this summer - Off to Kefalos for a couple of weeks in September. I'll comment on the prices (see other topic) when I get back for comparisons sake. I will return!!!

We have just come back from there, try Magic beach, fantastic with lovely views from the taverna.
Also Paradisco beach, drive up and through the village and follow the signs. The track is rough in places.

We'll be "doing the rounds" and checking out the whole island IF we can get our fat *rses on a 50c.c. moped(?) or up the insurance  and c.c. before we go! Either that or maybe a car (boo hoo!!) for a few days.
Is Paradiso (the one over the top of the mountains) do-able in/on anything other than a meaty bike or 4x4?? (There's a lot of weight to get back up a dirt track on a 50c.c. you know!)- FAIL!!!

Are you on about 2 of you on the 50cc?

Honestly, I wouldn't do it on a 50cc on my own, with a pillion on the back it may not get up many hills.

Lowest I'd do it on is a 125, that should cope with 2 people on.
Title: Re: Webcam
Post by: triton on July 28, 2014, 07:32:28 PM
Yes, over the mountain takes about 30min you will definately need 125cc especially if there's two like us.
We hired ours from Katerina's (a black Typhoon, piagio motor.) At the bottom of the hill before the climb up to Kefalos village.
Another quiet beach is Kata, same direction. When you get to the T junction instead of turning left to Paradisco Beach, turn right signposted for the Monastery.

Yesterday went from a gorgeous morning with the sea as flat as a millpond,  to a sudden increase in temperature and humidity,  and increasing cloud developing in the hills. It did not rain and the clouds cleared up. This morning was humid, relatively cool and rather cloudy,  Sadly we left this morning, so can't say more about the rest of the day, but there was no cloud on the north coast. There is some rain forecast in the next few days, but I hope it does not spoil your holidays.  Forecasts are not always accurate.

Just back from Plakias (30 Sept to 14 Oct) and the weather suited us perfectly: not too hot for walking during the middle of the day, but still warm enough for the beach and swimming in the sea on lazy days. Plakias is often windy but while we were there the wind was often very strong during the night but it usually died away by 8 or 9am. There wasn't a single day when we thought we'd be sand-blasted on the beach. The other thing we found different to other years was that on several occasions the weather up the gorge looked pretty nasty but thankfully never threatened to reach Plakias.

It looks as if autumn has arrived in Plakias today, and judging by the forecast, for at least the next few days.  It has to rain sometime, but when it does, Plakias must be a very different place from how most of us experience it.

It's great to see the view of the village again, now the camera has been serviced and the angle tweaked.  It'll be the only view we get of the Plakias this year, as we are going to the Peloponnese this summer instead.  On the up side, no Heraklion airport to contend with.
