Plakias / A not so worrying development

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the correct thread as I have found all the proposed development plans for the town somewhat confusing.

I was hoping someone who is either there now or who has been recently can update us on what has changed since last year. For instance, has the land behind the walk to the far end seen anything of the proposed development yet? Are all the old favourite tavernas likely to be open this year? What about the new harbour to the west of the town?

I know that some forum members have visited during the winter but I guess the numbers will increase markedly once we get to the end of the month.

Mike
I'm sure that the majority of the bars and restaurants will remain the same although there are always one or two that change or come and go. Whatever the developements are I can't see them affecting the local businesses much at this early stage, unless anyone local knows any different i.e. Santa or Dave and Ali.
I shouldn't think the new harbour will affect the town very much, I heard they were moving the fishing boats out there to give the pleasure boats a bit more room.

I, like you Mike are looking forward to the 2008 reports coming in.

george g...
I agree with George about the harbour. As regards the developments towards the far end I too hope not too much has happened so far. I don't want 2008 to be my last visit but will look elsewhere if the place is spoiled by them.

One thing that may affect the Brits this year is that the £ has fallen against the € by about 20% since last year, at a time when many are under financial strain at home caused by the credit situation. Fortunately for the service providers of Plakias many tourists are now from the euro zone.

Mike

Yes the £ is in a bad way against the euro. Does this mean 1 Mythos a week less on holiday??? ( I think not ).

although the end of May wasn't too great in Crete last year I believe.

Mike

Oh dear,  and I've just started arranging accomodation for my first holiday on Crete in May! :'(
The weather often is very good in May in Plakias. In 2006 it was over 30C and too hot for some. I'm just pointing out that it isn't so reliable early and late as it would be in July and August. Many (George excepted) find the temperatures pleasanter in May. The pros and cons of early/late season compared to high season have been listed many times on this forum. I'm sure you will enjoy.

Mike
Hi I do think early season in Lesvos weather is more iffy than Crete. Anyone been to Sigri there?

Hi Keef

Went independantly last year and found a place that I much preferred, although the previous three years I did stay at the Dora. (Nice to see your paying attention Mandy).
As Mandy said it is a basic appartment and I had no complaints about it, although I did have a good room in a good position.
There is a private house in front of Dora which means that some of the rooms have a view of a concrete wall. The other downside of Dora is that there is a lot of building going on around it and it is beginning to get a bit 'hemmed in'.
There is also a steep hill that one has to climb to the entrance and then three small flights of stairs to get you into the apartments, so if the pins are a bit dodgy I wouldn't recommend it.
It's a bit of a shame really, Dora, who runs the place is delightfull and a bit shy, so with all the building going on around her I don't think the apartments will survive much longer.

Check out the 'Article System' (top of page), Keef there might be some more info.

George thanks for that, it's back to the drawing board.

Hi Happy New Year. Looking to book for this year as anyone stayed at or any info on Dora studios?

Cheers

Keef

Stayed there a few years ago.  Dont think we will bother again.  Its okish.  Basic.  Had trouble with hot water as I recall and had to get on to the rep it was so bad.  After we complained things got better.  Its clean and simple and if that's all you need then you will be ok.  I think George stays there and finds it ok.

Thanks Mandy i think we will give it a miss

Cheers

Where to eat...or not! / Medousa
« on: June 24, 2006, 11:40:36 AM »
On our fisrt night we tried the Mendousa. We had a very good meal and paid what we thought was a slightly pricey bill. This did not put us off and went back the next evening much to the joy of the owner who told us he had given us the wrong bill and owed us 12 euros. Needless to say we eat there a great deal. Does anyone r
emember this happening in England?

Hi, just got back from our first but not last visit to Plakias. We had a great time and the weather was excellent. We had no problems at all apart from the idiot in the Ostraco bar that tried to rip us off twice in the same evening!
Many thanks to all the forum members for their help.

Plakias, does seem to have a good selection of beaches, most of which have plenty of beds, bars ect. Are there any that are quieter, not worried if we have to take our own rations and shade.

Thanks

Hi Graham  Karen

the resort of Arillas on Corfu is ok. Turn right when facing the sea walk for 10 mins, nice easy walking flat sand plenty of space and a good few people all nude. No beach bar, but only a short walk back for the beer. The resort it self is only small but all you need.

Cheers

Yes in May 2005
One of my best memories. and thus back this May again.

Warning:
Most likely Plakias has a strange virus, which is not identified yet. I am going to investigate this further in depth.  Code/nick named "Plakianitis".
When will you be there?
