if you aren't sure about catching the airport bus from the port bus stop where you are dropped off

You catch it from Eleftherias Square although it's a bit of a hike to get there.

Thanks Noopsy -not sure if I ever knew the name - I've found the bus stop in the daytime but when I have travelled back at night it just seems easier to get into a taxi for the last leg - and there are usually a whole load of others doing the same so its easy to share,usual advice applies - get an agreed price for the journey - these guys are going back and forth to the airport all day so they know how much they should be charging you....and asking for the price shows that you do too.

Both times I've been to Plakias with Olympic I've been lucky enough to be provided with a taxi transfer rather than the coach so certainly couldn't do it cheaper independently.

I know that it doesn't always fit in with flight times but I always use the bus(es)....massive savings and comfortable air conditioned coaches for the long ride from Rethymno to Heraklion....if you aren't sure about catching the airport bus from the port bus stop where you are dropped off you can always catch a taxi for the last short leg of the journey....

Where to go / Resorts similar to Plakias

We are intending to return to Plakias for a week next year, but would also like to stay at another resort that is similar to Plakias elsewhere on the Island, so that we can experience another area of Crete.

In the past we have stayed in Georgioupolis, but that is nowhere near as nice as Plakias and it has gone downhill since we stayed there 4 years ago.

So does anyone have any ideas, so that I can then do further research.

You could try Soughia...its much smaller than Plakias but has a similarly laid back feel and is in a good area for walking...some good food too - the web-site is here:

You can also get the ferry to Loutro or Paliochora quite easily if you fancy a change..

as much i know    there is no fixed itinerary ship to Gavdos ... here are some photos from my friend Gas Leclair http://www.plakiasontherocks.gr/gavdosuk.html ...enjoy!  

Any idea when the boat stops going out to Gavdos from Plakias?

Hoping to spend a week or so there early October but I'm prepared to have to come back to Crete via the ferries to Chora Sfakia or Paleochora.

I think you wil have to ask Lefteris from the Smerna Bar, I think it depends on the weather and how many passengers he wil have.

Thanks Steven - I thought that might be the case - sounds like its pretty windy at the moment! maybe there is more chance of a crossing in October.
