not really a sea view but i have stayed at the medousa for my last few visits and i think it's wonderful place, not cheap and cheerful but i really think its value for money

If the sea view is a must i have heard great things about the livicon as well

i suspect we will all have our special places to stay

Not sure if this book has been mentioned before but having missed out on visiting this last two years I have been reading some of my old books, the first is In Sfakia, passing time in the wilds of crete by Peter Trudgill published by lycabettus press

it is a wonderful story of his journeys to and around Sfakia from 1963 (IIRC) until the present day, it is full of lovely stories of the people and their history , which peter , as a greek speaker has been able to correlate exceedingly well

I found i was able to relate to many of his stories and enjoyed the book immensely

there is a much fuller review on Erno's Sfakiia site here  books about sfakia

i have always enjoyed staying at the KC and am waiting for s report from our friends who are there now (pete and shirl)

I have only ever watched tv on rainy days and it seemed Al Jeezira was the best reception then .... ::)

Gossip / Re: May be it is time to licence gun ownership?
« on: June 26, 2012, 11:05:39 PM »

Police have released CCTV footage of a getaway car used in the shooting of a man at a pub in Greater Manchester.

Mark Short, 23, died when a masked gunman opened fire in the Cotton Tree Inn in Droylsden Manchester on 25 May.

Two other men suffered gunshot wounds to their legs and a third suffered a wound to his back in the incident.

This is (of course ) where guns are illegal......

Hi Matt

there's no doubt it's in a beautiful location but to my mind that sometimes makes it's own problems ie too busy

good to hear you had some great meals ther!

Plakias / Re: First timer to Plakias 26th June :-)
« on: June 21, 2012, 10:06:13 PM »
Like many others I travel to Plakias alone every year and I guarantee you will love it. It's such a relaxed and friendly place that you will certainly meet others. Just get talking to people when you're walking to and from and on the beach.

I think Bertie has hit the nail on the head, don't be afraid to chat, there are loads of interesting and friendly people in the town, locals and tourists

have fun!

Just read "Sniper One" about an army unit based in Iraq (covering the episode where Pvt  Beharry gained his VC). I would strongly recommend it as a great read and on a sombre political note why we should support our troops in Iraq irrespective of whether we feel the war was justified or not.

Tony

superb book  heartily recommend it

Quote
the must-read that I enjoyed last year was Christopher Somerville's excellent 'The Golden Step', which recounts his walk east to west across Crete.

i have been looking for this book
