Where to eat...or not! / Re: Where to eat 2012 ?

Hi John R. I wasn't complaining about the distance to Kastro. We spent some very pleasant days walking in the hills. Merely the danger of being creamed by a local when walking back down in the pitch dark! The baklava was really good though!

Plakias / Re: How is business in Plakias?

We were there from June 14-28. Quite quiet we thought. Of the tavernas we went in Gio Ma and Gorgonas were the two busiest. We stayed in Anthos apartments which was only full on about 5 days. Saturday 23rd the village was really quiet. We had a brilliant time and can't wait to go back so we leave it up to everyone else to keep the tavernas open until next year!

Hi John, The new bridge will be above the old one so it cuts out the 2 or 3 hairpin bends go up to the west side of Rodakino. It doesn't look as if they are bypassing the whole village though.

Had stuffed squid at Atlantis last month and it was beautiful. They also do a mixed meze starter for 2 which includes pickled (I think) squid which was great as well!

Gossip / Road Works
« on: July 05, 2012, 03:55:46 PM »
Just a short note re road works. We drove out to Frangokastello while we were in Plakias in June and had a super day, but the road needs some care! My poor wife was a nervous wreck by the time we got back (actually, I quite enjoyed myself!).
Rodakino is dug up from one end to the other. A new bridge is being built over the gorge and the old one is now reached by a steep rough track on the east side and a steeper, rougher, windey track on the west side. The new bridge looks like it might be some time being built.
Travelling back from Frangokastello, the camber of the road means you can't actually see where the road finishes and empty space starts and as bits of the road have fallen away in places it pays not to go too fast!
Quite impressed with my trusty steed though. Never driven a Micra before and it was alright.

Plakias / Re: Back to Plakias

Hi Bille, Just came back last week from Plakias and we had a brilliant time. It had been 25 years since we were last there. Don't know why, because we loved it the first time and loved it again this year.
We were advised before we left to take cash in small denominations, which we did and we had no problems. The cash machines all seemed to be working OK and you could pay by credit/debit card as well. We arrived 3 days before the elections, but everyone seemed much more interested in Euro 2012!
We spoke to a French lady called Christina at what used to be Manousos' studios just outside the town. She lives in Plakias and she felt that the rural areas like Plakias would be OK because people would just swap the things they grew in their gardens and return to a sort of barter economy!
Wind still a bit of a pain but the beaches are great. East end of Plakias Bay, Mikro Amoudi and east end of Souda are all still nude beaches and now provided with sun beds and umbrellas as well as donuts!
Best meals we felt were Gio Ma, Atlantis and Gorgona, but everyone has their own favourites. Peligremnos great for lunch if you're on the beach at the 'far end'.
We stayed at Anthos Studios which were really one bed apartments rather than studios. Clean, great staff, comfortable and free wi-fi. What more can a man need? Oh yes! The wife enjoyed it just as much as me - apart from the road works at Rodakino!!!!!

Gio Ma was really good this June. Especially the mixed meze starter.

Just got back from Plakias to the cold and rain! Popped into Kastros for a coffee and the wife decided to try a piece of Baclava. If the rest of the food is as good as the baclava it should be a real treat! Didn't go for an evening meal 'cos I didn't want to drive and the road up there is a bit windy and narrow with no footpath for walking.

When I saw some of the cheap deals that members had got, I began to regret DIYing my holiday and using Easyjet but I'm feeling quite relieved now! We've got a daytime flight from Manchester in 3 weeks 5days and 14 hours (approximately  :) ) Hope everyone manages OK!

Really helpful. We go in 5 weeks. Can't wait. Hoping to do some walking and a lot of lying on the beach. 20+ years since we've been in Plakias. Hope we still like it.

Plakias / Re: Airport transfers/Bus
« on: January 20, 2012, 03:48:15 PM »
Hi All, Just registered and thought I might chip in my 2.5p worth. We're in Plakias in June 2012 for 2 weeks and we've hired a car from Alianthos in Plakias for 3 day at the beginning of the holiday, picking up at Heraklion airport and dropping off in Plakias, and three days at the end picking up in Plakias and dropping off at the airport for 190euro. Plan is to crash on the beach (far end) for the rest of the holiday!
Really looking forward to the hols. We visited about 25 years ago and have been meaning to return, but France, Menorca, Peru (memorably) and several other places got in the way.
