Off to Plakias tomorrow, and just wondered if you can phone the UK on a mobile from there.

Sure you can.  I do on my Vodaphone network, but mostly I text (cheaper)!

I can vouch for that as well. My Orange phone worked fine. Mobile phone reception over the whole of Crete including some quite isolated areas is more than excellent. Make sure before you leave that you are set up for international roaming etc.

I can also confirm that the Orange PAYG (Pay As You Go) sims also work in Greece which is handy because they don't work here in the US    (Just got here for a 6 week training course, Marge is not impressed    ) whereas a contract sim would work in the US.
