The first time we went over that bridge I stopped before going over to have a look down into the gorge and to behonest we were a bit apprehensive, until a truck came over from the opposite side.
The wooden slats were bouncing and the noise was to say the least off putting, but we went over anyway, very slowly, with my eyes focused on the other side.
I have been up there on numerous occasions since and love the place!
If you have any height phobias that you want to get rid of 'DO IT'
I'm up there again this year and really looking forward to the peace of the mountains.

Best of luck Chris, if I see anyone walking the gorge when I go over the bridge, I'll give you a shout!

The weird thing is one can hear the people below you talking

well....  here's a bit of sad news i picked up from the sfakia site regarding the bridge

German tourist dies following 80-meter fall in Sfakia, Crete

A 40-year-old German tourist died yesterday after falling from a bridge in Sfakia, Crete, police said. Officers said it was not immediately clear what had led to the man falling some 80 meters from the Aradaina bridge. The German’s body was recovered by rescue workers and police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Hi George!
Could you please tell me the way to reach the bridge?
My idea was not to do the whole walk down to the gorge, but just to park the car, visit the abandoned village (don't rember the name!) and walking the bridge!
Then, after doing that (if I'm successful), coming back to the car...
Isn't it bad?

Alex

you take the road west out of plakias to sellia, from there you head further west through rodakina heading to chora sphakion ( sfakia), from there you head up to anapolis

after going through the village centre ( with the statue) you turn left ( sign posted to ) aradhena, probably a two hour plus drive

but worth it

you can drive all the way to the bridge and over it!

if you park your car in anapolis it's about an hours walk to the gorge, there's a taverna in the square (with rooms to rent)  the lady there speaks english (not sure she speaks italien) but there's good food, cold beer and good local wine

we'll certainly be back i september

cheers

Yessss! I love those "mountain" places where you can eat genuine food! And drink home made local wine!
I remember one also in Milia, west Crete... (see the picture at the bottom!)

I've seen also your "old" post about the photos of the forum members... No more updates for that work? It would be nice to have your photos, so I can recognize you in my trip at late September...

Bye,

Thanks Alex
I've had a lot of trouble getting that in there, and I've been doing everything right.
It just needs shifting up a bit now!
BTW it's taken from the other side of the bridge just to prove I went over it.
There's a great little bar behind me all made from olive trees so anyone can have a snifter to settle the nerves if they make it.

Yes, maybe the picture had to do a shorter trip from Italy rather than from UK

George, is the bridge 1 hour walking from Anapolis ?
And what you call the "little bar", is that the taverna which told me harribobs ?

I'm not a 'walker' Alex so wouldn't like to say, I sure someone can answer that question.
The little bar is a 'little bar' not a taverna, it used to be a mobile but a hut has be built out of olive and there's a couple of tables and chairs outside, very basic!

uh! Thanks! 1 hour walking... and another hour for the way back!
Better to say that, like George, I'm not a walker! (as my grandfather says "young people was better in the past")
...so I think I will visit Anapolis, then take the car to reach the bridge and try to pass it only by foot...
Then coming back to the car... after a good couple of raki in the little bar

Hello Alex,
"a good couple of raki" for the road from Anopolis to Chora Sfakion?!
Don't take the shortcut to Loutro... The road is a litztle bit frightening even with only a bottle of Zaros inside...

No no... I mean using the "raki-way-of-thinking" (= drinking 2 or more raki) only to pass the bridge

errr... yes, I don't want to do the same as the german tourist
(although I've heard that was a suicide...?)

but how do I do with my vertigo?!?

BTW, before I was joking... I usually don't drink alcohol, especially superalcoholic, during the day...
and I want to take some spectacular photos from the middle of the bridge!

Bye,
Alex

Wise Man, I don't either during the day, maybe the odd beer or two, I tend to find it spoils the day.
Brave your vertigo Alex, and take the pictures.
