= Compage, 20 September, 11.43pm.
Trade was down last year and even further down this year, except for September.

John's (Compage) news, this aspect anyway, is disappointing for the locals trying to earn a living. First Choice pulling out could accelerate this trend. Makes one wonder why the resort needs a big new development, as has been reported recently.

For some reason that I can't fathom, Greece doesn't seem to be as popular as it once was.

Ian,

What John R says may sound cynical but I'm sure there is a lot of truth in it.

SeeFirst Choice pulls out of Plakias for 2005.

My experience was similar to John's; see above link with its multiple posts. On about the third call from me they contacted their accommodation team who knew that FC have pulled out of Plakias totally for 2005. Trouble is the word has still not filtered down to the telephone Help Desk. The annoying thing is that the decision was clearly taken at least 2 months ago.

My advice is to do what John and I did, insist on getting your deposit back now, so you can rebook. Someone has already reported that Olympic has already taken quite a lot of bookings for Kostas Chysoulla for May.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone from First Choice, reading all the negative posts, would respond. Is that a pig I see flying by?

Has anybody found any other sites where they mention this project. (Paul).

You could try www.plakias.com, which I found by accident a couple of days ago.

Djeessh this Forum is really active!  (Paul)

Paul,

If you think the forum is active now, just wait a week of so. Many of the regular contributors are in Plakias now and when they return I confidently predict the number of posts will markedly increase.

Paul,

In addition to the companies Fraoula has told you about, First Choice is there for the remainder of the 2004 season (but has pulled out for 2005). It was said in the forum that Cosmos is there for 2005, in the second edition of their brochure.

For the more independently minded traveller Susan K and others have recommended Anso travel (use the search button at the top of the page).

I'm not happy to see this either, as I don't believe it will enhance Plakias.     I can't exactly work out where it will be though.

I don't have too much faith in Greek planning restrictions either.

Still, looking on the bright side  there is plenty of space in the area one would have thought.

It was the big reunion dinner in Plakias last night, organised by John (Compage), and I'm sure a good time was had by all.     There has been only one post in the last week so most of the regulars are presumably in Plakias now. Should be some interesting posts on their return.

I'm impressed that Paul (Ploppy) is well up in all things meteorological as well as computers, as the former has long been an interest of mine (in a very amateur way).

Hello Susan,

I tend to use Yahoo for weather as you get a 10 day forecast. This says that your first 5 days will be sunny and not too hot (around 28 Celsius).

Try the link. 10 day weather forecast for Crete.

Weather Underground has more places in Crete for which it gives a forecast. Do you use the forecast for Rethymnon or Ierapetra? The former is nearer but the latter is on the south coast.

Hello Jos,

It's good to have a postive report on the Kostas Chrysoulla as I'm there in May.

Don't like to hear about the cats though.

Can't contribute anything to this topic as I don't undestand much of it.

Just a thought, for those not in Plakias at any one time (i.e. most of us) wouldn't a webcam be great? Imagine looking at it on Christmas Day or any other day in winter! Just pie in the sky I guess though.

As I understand it the meltemi is a summer wind from the north caused by low pressure over Asia Minor generating an anti-clockwise flow down the Aegean. This means that islands around Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, etc are less affected than Crete. As it is a northerly wind, imagine what it must be like on Crete's north coast! That said, the local gorges around Plakias probably have a funnelling effect.

In May and October, when I holiday, it can still be extremely windy at times but it iis from various directions. Wind can temper the heat in high summer but is less welcome early and late.

Putting "meltemi and wind" into Google produces a host of hits.

Kirsty,

Try the contributions from Noopsy 500 on 15 and 17 July and by Greecemad on 16 July.

Link to transfer by buses to Plakias.

It wouldn't suit me- too unadventurous. Have settled for the tour operator option, at least while there are good bargains to be had.

Hope you maange to make it.

Hello Compage,

You misunderstood my message. I meant that rain is very rare in Crete/Rhodes etc in July and August. It certainly isn't in May and October although I still believe that they are the most reliable parts of Greece for weather early and late. Thanks for the info about Thassos. What resorts did you stay at?

There was an earlier comment about the temperature of the sea in May. Admittedly it is cooler than September, but I still find it pleasant enough to stay in a while. I guess it's down to personal preference. I find May air temperatures very comaparable to October's.

Looking at the calendar, things are going to be a bit quiet on this forum for much of next month. As a matter of pure interest only (I wouldn't intend to use it when there in May) are there internet facilities in Plakias?
