Plakias / Re: October ?
« on: May 13, 2020, 02:18:48 PM »
I look at the webcam everyday from the Livikon and not a deckchair or umbrella and we feel choked at not being their. As you say I hope they are coping without the tourists unlike over here I am sure they wont have a furlough scheme. Let us all hope that they all survive the lack of customers. October cannot come quick enough I hope we are not being too optimistic. Take care everyone we know when we are out their and the ones we don't know.

Hope you are correct Daniel we lost our holiday to Plakias for the Greek Easter. All the people concerned with our holiday have been very kind, from Best cars at the airport they are carrying my booking over to October if all goes well. Also Maria and her son Gianni at the Helios apartments (part of the coop).
Easyjet who I was flying with have transferred our flights to October at the same price, so here is hoping.
We got cancelled last October because of Thomas Cook so very upset about not seeing the place for almost 2 years.
Let us all hope this deadly virus goes away and lets the world get on with our lives.

Plakias / Re: Winter is here
« on: January 03, 2020, 11:43:46 AM »
As Richard says remember when you could walk to Souda see no houses, walk along towards Plakias bay hotel no developments. We are not stick in the muds but the place will defiantly loose its appeal. I agree the people are the most friendly I have met on any holiday but it is the extra tourists that put the money in there pockets so I don't see them complaining.
Instead of visiting 2 or 3 times a year we will visit the once out of season. already looking for somewhere down the coast from Plakias that is less spoilt. As for 2 hour journey by coach simple if you drive hire a car, not that expensive if shop around.

Oh how things used to be. My big worry is that it may drive away the people who used to go for the laid back atmosphere and quaintness of Plakias. Yes I know progress happens but at what cost. If they send traffic around the back of the forum they will have to do something with the bridge by the youth hostel, I don't see that lasting too long.

Holiday Companies / Re: Car Hire
« on: October 12, 2019, 11:55:55 AM »
For the last 4 years we have used The Best car hire. Pick up at airport for our journey up to Plakias. you pay 50% when booking the rest when you arrive. We have used a lot of car hire companies and found these thee cheapest and the best.
We had our holiday cancelled because of the Thomas cook fiasco on the 4th October I emailed them the said no problem we will save your deposit for our visit in April 2020. I was paying 259euro for 3 weeks hire and they are fully comp full tank to return full.

Holiday Companies / Re: Olympic and Kostas Chrysoulla 2020

I can understand hotels getting fed up with Olympic they are a bit shoddy the way they treat there customers. We due to arrive 4/10/19 staying at Dora studios I was made to cancel due to the Thomas cook fiasco. I went online 2 days later my holiday up on Olympic website on sale for 5 times the price I was paying. Granted it was flying 2 days earlier. I wasn't offered the option to fly 2 days earlier. There is supply and demand and there is profiteering.
I also have asked Olympic about next years accommodations on offer but as yet no reply. Looks like traveling privately.
We must all hope that another company steps in to do package holidays to Plakias. We been going to Plakias for the last 27 years and this is the first time we have missed out GUTTED.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: No more Harakas ?
« on: December 31, 2018, 02:19:02 PM »
Does that mean a huge empty space where the Harakas is ? I would have thought that maybe Martina there daughter may have thought about running it.
I know Lambros had been looking very tired of late,he said as much when I last talked to him.
Maybe he will have more time for fishing I used to see him on the beach out the front of the Harakas sometimes in the early evenings.
Wow what a shock I also wish them a very happy retirement.

my wife and I will be arriving on the 10th April don't get in till 2000hrs. I have hired a car which we always do even for the 3 weeks we will be there it is cheaper than a taxi both ways. A friend of ours Barney from Dublin goes to Heraklion for the night and gets on the local bus to Rethymnon and then to Plakias. Last year at same time Olympic didn't even let Dora at her studios know about us coming. We wont arrive in Plakias until late evening this time we are waiting for a right palaver. Hey ho   Olympic wont care.

Gossip / Re: How did you first find Plakias?
« on: September 09, 2017, 01:11:22 PM »
Started in the early nineties first visit was to Elounda very nice but will have changed I am sure. following year Peleochora . We liked the island so much we looked in brochure and said Plakias sounds just up our street. Stayed all over plakias first was Appolo the rep was called Jassinta it is a bit different now. We like to stay at Doras now quirky but so peaceful and she carnt do enough for us especially the raki topped up every day.
We have made so many friends there not a bad one have we found. My greatest friend being Niko Brokialakis you will all know him from the fish and chip shop. I go up to his house when we are over there. I miss all the nights in his restaurant ,also the character's who used to go in there .
My friends back here say why do you keep going back to Plakias , difficult to explain until you have been around Greece and hit upon Plakias.
I have met a few Cretan people on my journeys around Greece and the really are a cut above the rest , I don't mean that in a bad way but they are so proud of where they are from.
Was in Plakias in April absolutely fabulous first time that time of year cannot recommend it enough back in October it will be so different .

Seen it many times when at the far end of the beach. I think you have the only solution to the problem, take there towels off if no-one around. I am sure they leave them overnight. How inconsiderate of them.

Got back on the 30th April been going the last 26years sometimes twice a year never for Easter I must say that it was one of our best visits so far. Truly amazed at the greenness of the place and totally gobsmacked with all the flowers . To anyone who has never been to the area in mid April I can surely recommend that you give it a try. Far end of the beech a few chairs and umbrellas nobody bothered about them so free the whole time of our stay.
Some tavernas  not open but getting ready for the holiday season but still plenty to choose from. We had one shower whilst there not much though then it got warmer and warmer until we sadly had to leave. Hey Ho back in October cannot wait though I am sure everything will look different.

The wife and myself are back in Plakias again in April and October we have booked a car for both holidays, if you shop around you will get it cheaper than a taxi.
Same old problem last year Olympic trying to save money.
Going out for Easter anyone had a Plakias Easter, would appreciate any info about if it is as good as the rest of the year?

Hi all fellow Plakias lovers. Just got back from 2 brilliant weeks there, miss the place already, The wife and I have been going for some 26 years or so both in May and September/ October. On arriving back home she couldn't resist going in to the travel agents to ask about going out at Easter.
Many of the locals and friends out there say it is a good time to go can anyone comment on this? The weather are the tavernas open do they have a festival etc. My wife wants to see the Easter festival and I don't want to have to drive to Spilli though that is my second favourite village in the area.
Sue and Paul from Carmarthen if you are looking on this site don't worry we will be back again in October it will be nice to see you again.
Any info about a Easter holiday in Plakias will be appreciated.
