Alianthos Hotel does currency exchange. A few years ago we took Scottish notes in to be changed and they had to phone a bank to check they were real! As they are an exchange, they may well do your travellers cheques.

Platia was closed when we arrived on the 9th of June. It opened again about a week later and wasn't very busy but the town was quite quiet. Had a very nice breakfast there last Saturday.

air con is five euro per night but we didn't use it as had a fan although it is getting hotter now so may have used it if we were still there. Ostraco's is your local!

We arrived back today after a fortnight at Sophia and would definitely go back again having previously always had self-catering in Plakias. Agree with everything saftie has said and although the balcony is a bit narrow, ours was very much in use. The large palm tree helped with privacy - this was at the back of the hotel looking into the dive centre. It was very hot in the morning but perfect for beers after the beach in the early evening. The staff are very friendly and the cleaning is superb. Take the chance!

Look at the Thalassa section on www.interkriti.net/hotel/plakias/horizon. We stayed in the smallest one twice and although there is a wall to the next apartment on the balcony, they have a huge terrace to go to anyway. The top one is really private. The views are fantastic and worth the dosh and the owners are very nice people. Cash not cards btw!

Get in touch with Stavros at the Horizon hotel - he has a website with photos but have lost bookmark though should be easy to find.The new building, not the hotel, has three very spacious apartments with excellent balconies looking straight to the sea. They are very popular though and we couldn't get in last year as only there for a week. Easy walk to town!

There is a list of taxi prices in the baggage claim area and in the airport itself so you can find out the fare before you get in the taxi. Three years ago, we just walked out to the taxi rank and took the first one, which happened to be a brand new Merc. The other drivers had fun shouting "Bon voyage" and "Have a nice drive"  to our man when they realised where we wanted to go. In the end, he really enjoyed the drive as he hadn't been south for ages and had forgotten how beautiful it is. The return trip was arranged through the owner of our studios who got her cousin to take us. After that we decided we would prefer to have our own car and have always had a car waiting from www.pangosmio.gr who will turn up at the airport at 3a.m to meet you. As we always stay a bit out of the centre, the car  has been really useful and you can also explore a bit if you want. Cretan taxi drivers drive the same as any other ones and I've never been bothered by the overtaking on double white lines as on our first visit in 1992 (to Matala), the driver explained that other drivers expect it and will get out of the way. It's certainly less scary than being in a taxi going at 50 mph on a single track lane in North Devon, but that's another message board!

I really don't want to put you off going into the sea at Plakias Julie, as it is one of the best things about being on holiday there. I got stung when the water was quite murky after a very windy spell and was not close to the shore.  Usually it is so clear that you would see a jellyfish miles away! In the unlikely event of getting stung, get vinegar or beer onto it, which I found out about later. Don't rub it while screaming your head off, which is what I did, as it spreads the poison. Better still, DON'T worry about jelly fish, get in that lovely water and have a great time.

I've been to Plakias several times and in May last year, I got stung by a jellyfish. It was after two very windy days and the water hadn't calmed down so it was quite murky. Not the calm, clear blue sea I am used to in Plakias. I was out on an "exercise" swim (you have to displace that scrummy olive oil somehow!) so I was not that close to the beach. I had some spectacular sting marks, probably not helped  by swimming from the end of the beach which I now know as "far end" from this board, and being suitably underdressed. Went back October last year and saw nothing although I had the full cozzie on, just in case , when going on more than a cool off session. Stick to the shallow bits jules numbers and just enjoy clear, clean water and the rest of Plakias. It's great!!
