well that's pretty conclusive!

so i suppose the next step is to decide what we put on the map

I suggest a number on the point of interest with an index. It's got to be the simple solution Chris.
Also the extent of the area the needs to be covered, I suggest just beyond the Oasis at the top of the hill through to Souda Beach.

The input from members is also going to be heavy
(Might I suggest that we all keep quiet until there's something to look at)

Then, where is the map going, so it's easily accessible for everyone? (Admin??  )

This is gonna be brill!!!

I can host it on the Plakias website.

Numbered pins seem a good idea.

What size image do we want (roughly translates as to what altitude do we take snapshots from).
Fitting the whole lot on one screen wont provide enough detail i'd imagine unless you have one of these Dell 30 inchers.

Another option apart from a static image is to start messing with the Google Maps API but I'll leave that until i'm really bored!

well....i'm not going to brag about how many inches mine is

this is the one i put together, it is quite big and i suppose it depends on which browser you are using, as to what image and what zooming you are able to do

eg with opera you can zoom right in

(edit, made pic smaller as there was little point to showing it full size)

How about this.

I think its pretty slick. May need to change to satellite view in the top right.

Edit: Added a few more places. Lots of possibility with this. Colour coded pins, links direct from articles/reviews (when set up) etc etc.

Looks good Paul. Just to let you know, when I displayed the map, I got a few errors -
Line 16: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 31: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 46: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 61: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 76: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 91: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 106: <styleUrl> is not supported

The satellite view is very good - frustrating that the coverage of my home area in the uk is nowhere near as detailed.

Thanks Graham,

Just a test really but I have got rid of those errors.

Need to think how to utilise it now.

Do we have everything on one map, i.e Accom, Tavernas, Bars etc with different colour pins?
Seperate map for different categories?

I would go for all on one map with different coloured pins. Although it might be more congested, often people want to see where a restaurant is in relation to their accommodation. Also. it might not be much more congested than havong separate maps as the areas with lots of restaurants are not the same as the apartment areas etc.

That is excellent Ploppy!

Now I'm going to have to take a computer on holiday with me so that I can look at the map while I'm there.

Absolutely fantastic, Ploppy.  I am of the same opinion as Graham and Karen.  Look forward to seeing the end result!

This is better than I expected guys, your doing a great job.
I do have one critisism though, keep in mind all the hotels, apartments, bars, taverners and other places of interest that readers might want to see, the map is going to be a bit overloaded with pins, unless you have seperate maps.

Good idea about eventually incorporating the FAQ file into the pop-ups!

It's a pity that the pins have such large heads.  In these circumstances the proposed map will only be really usable if you use maximum zoom-in.

Yes - I must admit, I was thinking the same. I was expecting the pins that look like inverted teardrops - pointed at the bottom. If these could be simply colour coded to indicate the different categories, they could be kept quite small. Thanks again, Paul, for all your hard work.
