Plakias / Car Hire
« on: May 11, 2022, 05:29:19 PM »
Hi. I know that car hire has been discussed before, but companies change, and prices certainly have. Just wondering what recommendations other members would have. We will probably get a taxi transfer, but will want to hire a car when we're in Plakias, and certainly want to use a local company.
 :)

PlakChat / Sunbed Guy (sorry - didn't get his name)
« on: October 16, 2014, 08:03:08 PM »
After a break of 5 years, we returned this year and so it was the our first year not seeing Freddy collecting the sunbed money. We were very impressed by the new chap who's doing it, noticing that he diligently picks up any cigarette ends or other litter he sees and puts it in a bin. He even reprimanded the doughnut seller for dropping his cigarette end when he was on his fag break at the far end. :)

Where to eat...or not! / Where to Drink!

Ostraco is great if you're wanting to stay close to the centre, but walking back from the Far End today, we popped into the Paligremnos, as we have done many times in the past. Not at all welcoming - maybe they want afternoon trade to use their beach bar. No milkshakes and all soft drinks (for Karen) are in small bottles, so we moved on. The beach bar is 4 Euro for a 500ml Mythos, so we gave that a miss. Antoni's Place has a nice feel to it, and at 2.5Euro for a Mythos, it gets my vote. :)

PlakChat / Dentist
« on: September 27, 2014, 06:26:23 PM »
Looking forward to our trip to Plakias on Tuesday but annoyingly, both Karen and I have toothache that our own dentist hasn't fixed. Painkillers are just about working but i was wondering whether there's a dentist in Plakias or whether we'd need to go to Rethymnon. Hope it won't be necessary to go while on holiday, but at the moment the odds are about 50:50 :(

Where to go / Santorini
« on: October 12, 2010, 09:16:32 PM »
Just back from 2 weeks in Santorini - our first time, but possibly not our last. We didn't know what to expect but hoped to have some of the things we love about Plakias - laid back; friendly; plenty of good walks. We went for the last two weeks of their season, staying in Perissa. It was quiet, which was good (we could imagine it would feel crowded in peak season), but over half the restaurants had closed for our second week - many people go back to the mainland for the winter nonths. Although Santorini has some expensive places to stay for those wanting romantic views over the caldera or of the sunsets, there were also plenty of cheaper places to stay. Overall, we thought it was less developed than Crete, Perissa restaurant prices were similar to Plakias. Bar prices varied considerably: 3 to 4€ for a 500ml Mythos in the bars by the beach but only 2€ away from the beach. Plenty of walks to keep us happy with clearly marked tracks which was useful as we didn't see a decent map in any of the shops. The hourly bus service to the main town of Fira was excellent (even more frequent in summer). As the island is so small, you could run out of new places to explore when returning but fine for a place to chill out. For those interested in ancient history, the ruins at Thira were very interesting as was the pre-history museum in Fira. The archeological site of Akrotiri is closed until June 2011. Beaches are not a patch on some of the beaches in Crete and the water gets deep quite quickly, so not ideal for children. We did find a naturist end of one beach but can't say how acceptable it would be in summer when the beaches are much busier.

We have seen kingfishers in Plakias before but were especially lucky to take this shot while enjoying a lunchtime drink at Ostraco's.

Where to go / More Walking Ideas
« on: September 28, 2009, 11:12:47 PM »
Kakamouri (hill at the far end of Plakias beach). Walking above the cliff following an anti-clockwise path up and round with a gentle scramble to the top.

Asfendou gorge - starts near the small village past Patsianos. Didn't see any other walkers on the way up or down. Only downsides - spent more time looking down at our feet than we would have liked and there's nowhere to get a drink in Asfendou so take plenty with you.

Moundros to Nisi (deserted village)

Kanevos to Mirthios via the the col around Kyrimianou, then back up the Kotsifou gorge. We enjoyed a very nice meal at the taverna in Kavenos.

Often we started with a walk from the Peter Thomson website, then adapted it when we either got lost or realised that it was going to take a lot longer than we thought.

Where to eat...or not! / Favourite Eateries - 2009
« on: September 28, 2009, 10:02:18 PM »
All restaurants will have their off nights and most people will have their favourites but here's a snapshot of our experiences.
Best service: Siroko, and Manousses
Best food, overall: Harakas, and Siroko
Best atmosphere: Manousses
Nicest individual meals: Mushrooms a la creme with Rice at Harakas, Plakias Plate at Mouses, and Spicy Pork at Medousa.
Best value: Any of the set menus
Most disappointing, overall: Mouses and Medousa (I was lucky, Karen wasn't)
Best raki: Harakas (sadly we weren't offered any the second time we went there  )
Also tried and ok: Gorgona, Kri Kri.

I'm glad to say, in the main, we had excellent meals and service.

Plakias / Many mozzies this year?
« on: September 07, 2009, 08:50:25 PM »
Wondering whether to pack the anti-mozzie plugs. We've packed them in previous years but haven't really needed them. Has this year been any worse than previous years?

If you're into treasure hunts, you can always try to find some of the geocaches in the area. There's one at the top of Timeos Stavros, Paul - look out for it when you're there.

If you are new to geocaching, it's worth checking the home page to find out what it's all about.

Forum and Website discussion / PM System Disabled?
« on: April 12, 2009, 01:49:14 PM »
When trying to view a new PM, I got a message saying that the Personal Messaging system was disabled and that a software upgrade was required. I presume it's not just my laptop.
