Plakias / Back again
« on: September 10, 2017, 11:34:42 AM »
Back for our regular Plakias fix.
Staying with George again at Creta Mare.
First day here but place seems little changed from previous years.
Very hot at32 deg and little to no wind.
Ate at Geo Ma last night and it was  first class, as usual.
Will eat with Sonya tonight.
THe town is very busy with a good mix of nationalities.
This we find a good thing.
Now for the beach.
And will assess the sunned hogging issue.
Will give a full report when we get back to UK.

Plakias / Building work ?
« on: December 23, 2016, 10:03:58 AM »
Been looking at the Plakias webcam over the last few days.

I may be my eyesight, but is there some building work being carried out at the back of Gio Ma Taverna ?

A big, black square building seems to be appearing ?

Plakias / September update
« on: September 18, 2016, 11:37:15 AM »
Now half way thru our annual pilgrimage to Plakias.

Weather is hot.
Very hot at 35 deg plus.
Some wind but not enough to be a nuisance.
But the sea is beautiful and warm

The place is as busy as we have ever seen it at this time of year.

Excellent mix of nationalities with no one being too prevalent.

Staying with George at Creta Mere as usual and eating out at our usual places....Harkas, Geo Ma, Sifis etc.
Every taverna is very, very busy.
We are needing to book a table a several places to ensure getting in to eat at a time we want.

Changes from last year ?
Very little, in truth.
New Tarmac roads in part of the village and a few small building changes.

But the biggest change for us that our favourite place to eat, Sirocco, has now changed hands once again and not now on our eating out rota.

I will update further on our return home next weekend.

Plakias / Early September date
« on: September 12, 2015, 11:09:50 AM »
Back in Plakias again for our annual fix.
Weather hot.
Very hot
34 deg and sea temp at 27 deg
Mythos at 2 deg.
The town is very busy and most Tavernas doing very well
We have eaten at Sirocco, Gio Mar, Harakas and Lysseus and tonight we go to see  Siffi.
Best so far ?
Maybe (just) Lysseus but all top class.

Prices this year ?
We feel that on average we are paying slightly more for our evenings out.
Maybe 10 pc or there abouts ?
But still excellent value for money

As for the Greek crisis;
What crisis ?

Off to the beach now.
Not "far end" but up by the beach bar.

Yamas.

Plakias / Any changes ?
« on: May 18, 2014, 04:59:33 PM »
We are due back in Plakias on the 29th May for 2 weeks for our regular summer "fix"
Car booked from the airport and room with George at Creta Mere sorted out (I think !!).

From those who have been there earlier in May, are there any major changes from 2013 ?

I know things don't change at any great pace in the village but are all the same tavernas open and do any of them have changes in staff/owners ?

Is Sonja still at Harakas ?

Plakias / Holiday report from 30th May to 13th June
« on: June 14, 2013, 08:29:39 PM »
We are just back from 2 weeks holiday in Plakias, our 10th visit since 2006.
We did not visit Plakias in 2012 so some of the changes we saw might not be as recent as we thought.

These our our observations and views:

Fights:
We flew with Eastjet from Manchester 7.10 Thursday morning and arrive in Iraklion 13.20in the afternoon.
Return flights to Manchester 2pm Thurdsay 13th June.
All flights on time and service by airline first class.

Hotel:
We stayed with George at the Creta Mere for the 8th time and as usual had room no 7.
The hotel is "basic Greece" but spotlessly clean and the view from the balcony is to die for.
We will return to Creta Mere same time (ish) next year

Weather:
We have usually been to Plakias about the second 2 weeks in May and had some very mixed weather.
So we thought to go a little later to see if thing improved.
Were quite surprised at the mix of weather we had.
The weather was very unpredictable.
Yes, 14 days of sun and no rain ( except for a down pour on our return drive to the airport)
And only one very windy day which kept us from the beach.
But it never seemed to be settled into early Greek summer weather.
But if truth were known , we would gladly settle for the same again next year !!

Eating out:
We used Harakas, Sirocco,Sifis, Kastello and Medousa.
There are many more to chose from but only so many nights to do so.

Harakas:
Topclass food and sevice.
Our favourite place to eat in Plakias
Thank you Sonja.

Sirocco:
Under new owners since Stavros and Maria Left 2 years ago.
Food now is as good as, if not better, than before.
We ate there 4 times and will make it a regular haunt in future

Sifi:
Sifi is as Sifi always was

Kastello:
Food goodbut the place was almost empty when we ate there
The walk back in the dark can be a bit of a problem

Medousa:
Good food and service.
First week good with very mixed nationalities.
The second week it became far to Anglicised for us.

Clothed/unclothed:
We thought that this year the mix of clothed and unclothed beach goers was just about right.
The sunbeds outside the last beach bar (opposite Pelagrinos) were for clothed bathing and there were signs up to that effect.
The next 100 yards of beach was a "transition zone" with the first 20 yards clothed, going to nude bathing after that up to the far end sunbeds.
All seemed to us to be in order with little or no problems.
But others may have other views.

Changes in Plakias:
As said, we did not go last year so these may not be new changes
The supermarket next to the campsite has doubled in size and now stocks everything you could need.
They have also built a huge concrete extension at the back of the supermarket which noone seems to know what for ?
The main bakery has been refurbished and opened Monday 9th June  and is much as it was, still very good.
A few places were closed and either left empty or replaced with other things but on the whole, Plakias is as Plakias was, at least to our eyes.

Visitor mix:
First week was very quiet with a very wide range of nationalities
The second week was very much busier and the percentage of English/British voices heard increased a lot.
But the town was still only half full or just over when we left.
Eating out in the evening, there was not one place at which a table or more could be had at peak eating times.

Holiday overall was top class and we will be back same time, same places, next June.

Where to go / Stoupa in September 2012
« on: January 17, 2012, 02:55:38 PM »
We will be giving Plakias a miss this year afrer 5 years of going May and September.

Instead, we are going to try the mainland and the resort of Stoupa in early September.

Has anyone on this site ever been or had any experience of that resort ?

I know that there is a website for Stoupa (similar but not as good as the Plakias one) but I would value any information Plakias regulars might have on Stoupa.

PlakChat / Mythos
« on: August 13, 2011, 03:14:52 PM »
Shopping at Booths in Ilkley this week and found Mythos on sale at 10 pounds for 6 bottles.

Could not resist the offer !!

Now Saturday afternoon and the first sip of Mythos since May......

Ahhhhh.

But only 4 and a bit weeks to go before the first real drink at Sifi's.

On another subject, we are pleased to hear that Sirocco's has re-opened, even without George's son as front of house.
It was closed in May when we were last there but speeking to George and Maria, they did plan to open early June.

It looks loke they have got going again.

It will be interesting to see what has changed

We think that it was the best place to eat in Plakias, so let's hope that it still is.

Where to stay / Pelagrinos new build ?
« on: May 28, 2010, 05:28:24 PM »
I noticed this year on a walk up the hilside that there was a new building going up next to Pelagrinos.

Does anyone know if this is to be part of Pelagrinos or is it a separate new building.

It does not seem very large or intrusive, unlike its grey concrete neighbor ( which is still far from finished).

I took some pictures of the area and when my daughter gets home to show me how, I will try to post them.

Plakias / May 2010 price rises ?
« on: May 02, 2010, 10:55:17 PM »
Ruth and I are due back in Plakias again on Tuesday the 11th May for 2 weeks (and it can not come quickly enough)

But I wonder what effect the financial problems which Greece is having will have on the prices we will pay this year.

The Monarch flight from Manchester to Chania and 2 weeks hire car are already paid for (in England) but has anyone any idea what other costs may/may not have risen or are due to rise ?
These will be mainly eating out costs, accomodation costs and supermarket prices.

It may be to early to know what will happen and we may well have to wait and see for ourselves when we finaly get there.

Holiday Companies / Jet 2 from Newcastle
« on: April 16, 2010, 10:02:45 AM »
A bit late for us as we are already booked for May and September but have just seen some new flights to Crete from Newcastle with Jet 2 which look quite good.
They might be worth a look for anyone not yet booked for Plakias.

Plakias / 2010 flight prices
« on: July 13, 2009, 10:44:18 PM »
I now see that the flights to Plakias for 2010 are coming on line.

We have just booked for the  for the last 2 weeks in September 2010 at a cost of 506 pounds for 2,  from Leeds Bradford with Jet 2.

And we still have this years holiday in Plakias in September to come!!

But what are the sites thoughts on the probable 2010 and onwards costs of independant travel?

At the moment, it stacks up with us as:

Flights for 2 = 506
car for 2 weeks = 275
Accommodation for 14 nights with  =  430

Which is c 1200 pounds.

I know that it can be done for less but we have tried both ways, and I know which we prefer.

But I do not see the costs (particularly of flights) coming down much in the near future.

What we were  pleased to see, when we visited Plakias in early May, was that the prices in  supermarkets, accommodation, restaurants/tavernas and bars had been held very much at 2008 prices.
This compensated in a large amount for the dismal exchange rate.

Now back to the computer to see what we can find for Early May 2010.
It may well be Monarch, to Chania, which will be a change!!

Plakias / New harbour
« on: July 25, 2008, 01:48:56 PM »
It was last September when we last saw the building work on the new harbour.

Have any of those who have visited Plakias this year a progress report/pictures on the work to date?

We are to visit again at the end of September for 2 weeks (but taking in the tourist festival) so maybe it will be completed and in use by then?
