Holiday Companies / INDEPENDANCE

Well that's me sorted for this year.
I booked independantly for the first time, and I was surprised how easy it was.
OK, it turns out more expensive than the Holiday companies but the choice of flights and accomadation gave me so much more to choose from. I can understand now why so many people do it!

I got the apartments I wanted and the room I wanted, overlooking the beach and the Dinosaur sunsets, and the flight gets me into Plakias in time for lunch, and at peak time, 21st August.

If it all turns out OK, I think I might be a convert (thats 'convert' Mandy), until the holiday companies start including a more varied catalogue, and show a little bit more consideration for the lone traveller.

Like George we have booked directly this year.

Our daughter is fed up with us continually praising Plakias, so she is joining us this year, and like so many others have found the single supplements are a rip off. We will report back to the forum with our experiences as independent travellers on our return.

This will be our 3 visit to Plakias in as many years (George has got a lot to answer for......)

26 weeks and counting.

Hope to see some of you there.

Santa

good news! i look forward to seeing it next month

as for the fountain, it's got to be an improvement! )

OK- I just returned from a weekend in Plakias- Things are getting quiet, but the good news is that they have started on the constructionofm the harbour. The beach below Skinos 2 is the site and by the time you all come next year thare should be much progress by then. Also, these persistent rumors about a large development east of town seem to be correct. I asked around and it seems that this development will become reality sooner than later.

Santa

Hi Santa

Does anyone know exactly where the new development is going to be situated?

george g...

Yes - I'd be interested to know as well. If you mean the 'Plakias Panorama' development, off the main road then I'm not surprised work has started but a year or so ago there was also a development much closer to the beach planned, west of the Paligremnos. Any sign of work there?

Graham

As far as the development is concerned, nothing has started. However, I was curious about the land west of Paligremnos- it is clean and fenced and just looked ripe for some excavation and that is why I asked my friend about it and he said what I posted above. Had lunch at SIFIS- great new place. I understand that he will be open during the winter, so come on down- With all the rain recently, there have not been the mud slides that everyone was so worried about because of the fire,so far- so let us keep our fingers crossed.
Santa

Please could someone add the location of the new harbour on to the map, for those of us who are not familiar with the beach below the Skinos 2.

It should be noted that not all airports are going to implement the new baggage arrangements immediatly.
If you are travelling within the next day or so (as we are) it may be wise to stick to the clear plastic bag - just in case.

I would be very surprised if it was intentional, we've known him for a few years now and like him a lot!

Hello everybody, I'm the latest Newbie.

My wife Chris and I will be visiting Plakias for the first time, during 5 and 19 September, staying at the Leman. Looks to be a popular time with members.

We definitely qualify as Saga louts and would welcome the chance to make some new friends.

We normally like to do a couple of organised excursions, as well as a little personal exploration. Any suggestions on which excursions are worthwhile and which to avoid?

Thanks for any help.

Mike

Welcome to the forum Mike,

We visited Plakias for the first time last year and went on the organised trip to Knossos.
Although the trip was OK, and the guide was very knowledgeable it was very difficult to hear her above the noise. All the coaches seem to arrive around the same time, hence the place was heaving. Following the guide was also a challenge, running was the only way to keep up on occasions. I think in future I would drive there, buy a good guide book (or use one of the individual guides that hover aroung the entrance touting for business) and wander around at my leisure.

Although I don't have personal experience, a couple we met last year went on the Santorini trip. The whole trip took 22 hours door to door, of which much of it was either on coaches or boats, or waiting for coaches and boats. They would not recommend the trip to anyone.

If you are prepared to drive, then get a local guide book and just explore, which is what we did, and had a fantastic time, so much so that we are back at the Lamon in 11 days (and counting).

I'm sure you will have a great time.

well I used to go to spain before I was old enough to argue. I used to go with a friends family that liked all the usual touristy airtours type places....eating MacDonalds..that kind of thing. Then when I was about 15 I went to Greece with my Dad somewhere in Corfu that was tiny and unspoilt. Deciding I loved Greece I then went to Sidari snd hated it.......ever since then I am very fussy where I go!

We stayed in Sidari in Corfu a couple of years ago ----- probably the worst holiday we have ever had.

What do members think of this Hotel?

We stayed there for 2 weeks at the begining of May and were most unimpressed by it.
Poor breakfast, laughable plumbing, tiny pool area,no view from room and poor staff.

That's the downside of our holiday, however the upside made up for it:

This was our first visit to Plakias and we enjoyed our stay in the town so much that it will now become a regular destination for us but in future will will find other places to stay. Our next visit will be early May 2008.

We found the general "feel" of Plakias and the local people to be probably the best we have found in over 15 visits to the  Greek Islands. It has everything we need for a relaxing holiday, with good walks nearby and first class eating places. The beach (close to the far end) is also first class.

Only Thassos Town comes close to it for us.

The Hotel was the only downside of our stay.

Welcome to the site Daniel

We stayed at the Lamon last year and added the following to this forum on our return.

"We stayed in the Lamon the last 2 weeks of August. The rooms are basic, we were B&B (Breakfast was bread, butter, jam and a cake + tea or coffee, a bit boring after 2 weeks) and apart from a fridge in the room, it had no other cooking/drinks facilities.
We were in one of the rooms that had not been refurbished, but it was OK. The air-con was extra (3 euros per night). Safety deposit was in a locked draw in reception (1.5 euros per night).
The seating area in front of the hotel is wonderful to 'people watch' (It is also where breakfast is taken)
The serving staff were very attentive and helpful. The rooms were cleaned every day, and the linen was changed very regularly.
We did not suffer from any nuisance noise problems at night (people on an early morning departure woke us on one occasion, with the wheels of the suitcases on the marble floor). We had expected some noise due to its location, but were pleasantly surprised. The pool is small (approx 10metres x 10 metres), but the beach is only across the road.
We enjoyed our stay at the Lamon and would not hesitate to return there (only not on B&B)."

Although the rooms are very basic, (we were lucky to have a view over the hills behind Plakias) we spent so little time in there the issues stated above did not bother us. In fact we will be back in the Lamon in 3 weeks.

I will report back to the forum if standards are any different to last year.

21 days and counting.

Sorry to hear about the fire.
We are arriving on the 15th August for 2 weeks and stopping at the Lamon, we fly out from Birmingham.
We are really looking forward to the break.
Is anyone else on this forum staying at the lamon on those dates?
Can anyone tell me if there is a hole in the wall anywhere local?
26 days and counting.

We are staying at the Lamon the same 2 weeks, but we are flying from Gatwick. I suspect we will probably be on the same transfer.

Hope to see you there.

Hi all!

Me and my wife are going on a 2 week holiday to Plakias in July this year.We are self-confessed Grecophiles, but we are usually in the Ionians when we go away, apart from the two occasions we've been to Rhodes.
I have been to Crete before, but that was back in 1988 with 9 workmates and we stayed in Aghios Nikolaos, the rest of the holiday was an alcohol-induced blur!
We're staying in Lamon Aporthotel (I'm sure you'll have lots of things to say about that!),but all we require in accomodation is somewhere to put our weary heads down for the night, and somewhere to wash, etc.
From what I've read and seen about Plakias, I'm sure we're going to have a great time as we don't do "Rowdy", even though we do like to occasionly have a "mad one"
If any of you regulars are in Plakias during the "arse end" of July, then perhaps we can meet up and have a giggle!

    All the best to all!

 Chris Harris.

We stayed at the Lamon last August (Bed & Breakfast) and enjoyed it so much we have booked again for this August.
Rooms are basic and clean (our room was at the rear overlooking the mountains. The location is fantastic, many an afternoon was spent on the seats at the front of the hotel.
I hope you enjoy Plakias as much as we did.

As for your fishing rod, there were people fishing from the harbour, but I don't know how sucessful they were.

We have just returned from our first visit to Plakias.  We loved the place and the people. Thanks to George who made us interested enough to visit.
However, we heard a rumour (from 2 different sources) that the Meltemi music bar is not having its license renewed when it expires at the end of the season, and that there are plans afoot to build a 300 bedroom hotel on the site and adjoining land. Does anybody on the site have any further information? Those of you who are still to go to Plakias this year (lucky devils) please could you investigate.
