PlakChat / Oo look what I found !!!

Most certainly will be going with an open mind as I always do when visiting a new place.  We've been to some wonderful places and some have been revisited. Pefkos on Rhodes is very relaing for us as we usually stay on the outskirts of the village. Jan says it is bigger than Plakias and probably a bit more lively.
Arillas in NW Corfu is an absolute delight and we have already booked to go back there next May. Have a look at arillas.com.
Also fell in love with Paleochora further along the coast westwards from Plakias. One day we will return there.  Been to lots of other places but none have captured lus like the ones I've mentioned.

George we always keep our beer in the bottom of the fridge (coldest part) and our glasses in the freezer. Tend to leave a smidgeon of water in the bottom of the glass. Helps to give a bit of extra to the head.

Yep we have our shopping list ready for the visit tomorrow night.

Incidentally we fly out to Plakias on 21.09.10 staying at Kosta  Chrysoulas.  My first visit but will be Jan's second.  She is worried sick that I will think that Plakias does not live up to what she has been telling me.

Hi,
my partner and I have recently booked for our first holiday in Plakias. Thanks very much to all who have posted on these forums, it was a great help in deciding on Plakias and in giving us some information about where to go when we get there.

Maybe bump into some of you while we are there?

Hope you have a great time - I'm sure you will. We arrive soon after you depart so we will look out for your footprints in the sand. You have a very good price there - and from Newcastle as well (our local airport).

John R

Hi John We arrive on the 21st September to Kostas so may well see you there.

In 2005 Jan ( my then fiancee) visited Plakias for a week with her daughter Lucy and stayed at the Lamon (good old Kosmar days). They found a particular place to eat and went there a few times. She cannot remember the name of the taverna but she says the name of the waiter was Charlie Babis.

Can anyone throw any light on which taverna this could have been as Jan wants us to eat there when we come to Plakias in September.

Don't know about Charlie Babis, but a (or "the") Babis owns and waits at the Medousa which roughly speaking is behind the Lamon hotel.

Thanks for this John. The name doesn't ring any bells with Jan but maybe when she sees the place it may well come to her then.

Has anybody else noticed that the Olympic website is only showing prices for 2010 at Kostas, Dora & Irida.
All other properties have no prices displayed in the price panels.

Could this be because they have not negotiated next years rates yet, or are they dropping them?

Peter&Dawn

The brochure for 2010 is the same. I will be staying at the Santa Maria in a few days time but it is not included for 2010. There seems to be a general trend to withdraw closer to the airports. I have checked a number of brochures for 2010 and resorts previously listed have disapeared. i.e Paleochora and Myrtos. There is very little now listed for the south coast of Crete.

Derek.

You are quite right , Derek . Since Kosmar pulled out there are sadly no packages to Palaeochora from the UK. There are some from Germany I think.

I have stayed at Santa Maria and the Irida looked pretty good over the road . Nice pool away from the wind.

I seem to remember that last year some people who had booked for the Santa Maria found themselves transferred to the Irida. Or am I hallucinating again  ?. Lucky them I say as the Santa Maria is an odd place all round.

Heather.

Despite it's many faults Kosmar is sadly missed. It covered more locations in Greece than any other company. It had an interest in Greece because it's owner was Greek but this interest died as soon as XL took over.

Derek.

Bit of good news. A company called Goldtrail now do Paleochora. Specialists in Turkey but they have set on a lot of Kosmar staff to look after there new Greek side. have gone into many of the old Kosmar accommodations.

Plakias / 2010 flight prices

I now see that the flights to Plakias for 2010 are coming on line.

We have just booked for the  for the last 2 weeks in September 2010 at a cost of 506 pounds for 2,  from Leeds Bradford with Jet 2.

And we still have this years holiday in Plakias in September to come!!

But what are the sites thoughts on the probable 2010 and onwards costs of independant travel?

At the moment, it stacks up with us as:

Flights for 2 = 506
car for 2 weeks = 275
Accommodation for 14 nights with  =  430

Which is c 1200 pounds.

I know that it can be done for less but we have tried both ways, and I know which we prefer.

But I do not see the costs (particularly of flights) coming down much in the near future.

What we were  pleased to see, when we visited Plakias in early May, was that the prices in  supermarkets, accommodation, restaurants/tavernas and bars had been held very much at 2008 prices.
This compensated in a large amount for the dismal exchange rate.

Now back to the computer to see what we can find for Early May 2010.
It may well be Monarch, to Chania, which will be a change!!

Catch the bus from Chania over the mountains to Paleochora on the SW coast. Just google the name and loads of info for you to have a look at. Went there in 2007 and hoping to go back in the near future. Proper greek village.

Plakias / Holidays 2010
« on: July 13, 2009, 11:44:47 AM »
Don't know if this is the right place in the forum to put this topic as we are complete newbies.
About 4 years ago my then fiancee came to Plakias with her daughter for a weeks break. On her return she raved about how much she enjoyed her holiday and Plakias.  Force of circumstances have prevented both of us coming to Plakias but we are in 2010.
Booked with Olympic yesterday to go to Kosta Chrysoulla on 21st September 2010 for two, hopefully, glorious weeks. Reckon we got a bargain at £733 for both of us.
