Plakias / Greek lockdown
« on: November 05, 2020, 07:23:38 PM »
I've just seen on another site that a lockdown has been announced for the whole of Greece, from 6am this Saturday (7th Nov).
This has an initial duration of three weeks.
Non essential retail closed.
Text messages required to request leaving home for essential shopping, work, doctor or exercise.
Travel between regions banned.
Senior schools will close -primary and nursery to remain open.

I wish everyone well. There were limited restrictions when we were in Plakias in September - remarkable to me how well this was supported by everyone. I'm so sorry further measures are necessary.

PlakChat / Sun warning
« on: June 30, 2020, 06:25:29 PM »
I've recently been receiving treatment at the excellent Dermatology Department of University Hospital Plymouth - better known as Derriford.

While chatting to a nurse specialist today, I mentioned Sunscreen, assuring her I always used factor 50. She then reminded me that almost all sunscreens have a shelf life - which she finds many patients are surprised by. She suggested I write the purchase date on any bottle as I buy it, and check it's not expired before use. She showed me several bottles which have a small picture on the rear label, usually with a little '12' inside a bottle. That's the shelf life -in months.

So before setting off to Plakias, check any lotions you pack!

Stay safe!

Plakias / Still hoping to make it this year!
« on: June 29, 2020, 03:17:52 PM »
Hi everyone. Is anyone else still hoping to make it to Plakias this year. I am! Currently booked for early September. We've booked EasyJet flights, so if they are forced to cancel we can use a voucher later - next year if necessary. Personally I'm happy to go in October if I must.

I see from 'Keep Talking Greece', flights will NOT be allowed from the UK until July 15th at the the earliest,

Article:https://www.keeptalkinggreece.com/2020/06/29/no-direct-flights-from-uk-sweden-to-greece-until-july-15/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+KeepTalkingGreece+%28Keep+Talking+Greece%29

We've booked accommodation on a 'no fee cancellation' basis, similar with car hire. Fingers firmly crossed!

Holiday Companies / Olympic discounts?
« on: January 06, 2019, 04:45:51 PM »
I must be on an Olympic mailing list somewhere.
Yesterday I received a mini-brochure regarding this years holidays.
There was a section offering the following discounts:

  • £80 off when you spend £800 - code SALE80
    £150 off when you spend £1250 - code SALE150
Solo travellers - £35 off your booking - code SOLO35

I have no idea if they are still current, but if you are about to make a booking, it might be worth trying one!
Please let us know if you do.

Plakias / Re Lance Chilton - HELP NEEDED
« on: January 03, 2019, 03:48:34 PM »
I'm hoping one of the long standing Plakias regulars can help with this request I received today.

  • First I'll explain a bit about myself. My name is Rutger Niemeijer, I'm a 22-year old student from the Netherlands.
For my studies, Ecology and Wildlife, I am doing an internship at Archipelagos, an organisation on the Greek island Samos.
With a few other people, I'm trying to make a list, or an index, of the plant species on the island. During our research we found a post you made in 2014 which said that Mr. Lance Chilton has sadly passed away. As you might know he once authored a book titled 'Plant list for Samos'. This work would be very useful to have for us. Since we couldn't find it online I was wondering if you perhaps know any place where we can find a digital version of the book, or if there is anyone on the island that we could borrow the work from.
My e-mail is rutgerniem@gmail.com, in case you want to answer this question.
I hope to hear from you soon.
    Yours sincerely,
    Rutger Niemeijer

It looks as if Rutger is engaged on some important work - could anyone help please?

Plakias / Lance Chilton - Sad news!
« on: August 13, 2014, 04:20:30 PM »
Many forum members will have encountered Lance during their time in Greece. Sadly, I never met him, but we swopped email many times. I was always impressed by his knowledge, gentle manner and downright enthusiasm.
Below is the text of a message I received from one of his close friends.

If you did not already know, Lance Chilton died of an acute heart attack in the evening of 30th July, in his 60th year.  Hazel and I had a 'phone call from his wife Hilary the following day.

Anyone interested might like to know that he will be cremated at the Mintlyn Crematorium, Kings Lynn on Monday 18th August 2014 at 13.00.

We know that many of his friends from the early 1980's (when he began the Botanical Specials and before he produced the walk booklets as 'Marengo') through to the 2000's will be attending the funeral.

He had been ill with an entirely unrelated condition for some years.  This had slowed him down. Also, because of a change of policy by the owners of several guided books, he and Hilary were unable to update their walk booklets alongside their contributions to guides of the Greek islands.

Hilary is proposing to scatter his ashes on the island of Thasos sometime next year.

Lance  was a lovely man who gave much pleasure to many people with his kindness, patience and love of plants.  His freehand drawing of maps was unsurpassed so that his walking guides actually worked - he had walked them all several times and often in the reverse direction!

Lance, you will be missed - but you've left a legacy that will endure for many years.!

Plakias / Off season.
« on: July 28, 2013, 03:28:30 PM »
Anyone visited off season? It's worth the effort, as Plakias is totally different when the season ends. We had a great time, and I'd love to do it again. However, we had to fly Heathrow-> Athens -> Crete. This was not as bad - or expensive- as it sounds, but takes a great deal more time.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's visited in the quiet times!

But the main reason for this post is that a group of Crete ex-pats are currently trying to get direct flights to Crete from the UK all year round, which would be a great benefit to them, and to us when we decided to go for a winter break. Please take the time to add your name to the petition here:

Announcements / New site
« on: November 21, 2011, 08:02:57 PM »
I've been aware for several years that the information on the 'Welcome to Plakias' site is out of date - and in places, just wrong! I kept promising myself I would get down to a complete update, and this message is to let you know that I've started work.
Ploppy and I had a lot of discussion about hosting etc - and you'll be aware that the site now sits on a new UK based server. We've also got this swish new forum - all credit to Ploppy, as I couldn't do it without him.
He kept the old site up and running for me while i worked on the new one. It's years since I tackled designing web pages, and I was so rusty I even stared an evening class to try to jog my memory. I'm surprised how things have changed since the site first went live in '98.
I finished my first go at two new pages today, and I hope you'll have a look at them for me, and let me know what you think. Comments on design and content are welcome, and suggestions on what I've done so far and what else is needed  would be much appreciated.
While I'm doing this work, I will keep the old site live, and put the new one at  www.ostraco.co.uk. At first you'll just see links to the pages, then I'll pull it together as a site as things develop (and I remember how to do it!).
I know this is a cheeky way to develop a page, but I feel the strength of Welcome to Plakias is in the input from others!
Feel free to tell me what's bad (and good?) - message me through the board, respond here, or mail me: ostraco@plakias.co.uk.

PlakChat / Top Ten....
« on: September 18, 2004, 07:40:34 PM »
Having got back from Paradise on Wednesday morning, I've just about finished sorting the washing and hundreds of emails.
It was a great trip - as ever - and we're getting ready for the 2005 bookings.

One of my mails contained this link - CLICK HERE - which gives a listing of 'Ten of the best nudist beaches'. And yes - Plakias is there!

I hope that doesn't mean we are going to get swamped with Telegraph readers next year!

Announcements / Getting help
« on: August 29, 2004, 11:00:25 AM »
Just to let everyone know that although the forums will be running, both Ploppy and myself will be away for holidays soon, so queries will not be answered as quickly as usual.
I'm setting out this morning (Sunday) - staying over in Guildford and flying out on Tuesday for 2 weeks - Ploppy is flying out on Friday - again, for 2 weeks.

And where will those holidays be......

Ploppy and  will be holding a site planning meeting on Ostraco balcony soon! Watch for developments when we get back!

Looking forward to seeing a lot of regulars out there!

John

PS - I've had a very busy time leading up to the holidays, and haven't been able to respond to all mails yet - Many apologies, I will try to rectify things on my return

Gossip / XP SP2
« on: August 26, 2004, 09:57:25 PM »
Anyone else installed the new Service pack for XP yet?
I did it tonight, as I was having a few concerns about security.

Since then, I can't access parts of the Welcome to Plakias site properly (the Board is OK) - and I also am having a few problems with other sites I used to use frequently.

Anyone else having trouble?

Forum and Website discussion / Profile
« on: July 14, 2004, 06:34:31 PM »
A couple of people have had problems with adding a profile picture.
It's not difficult, but you need to know where to click:

First, select the pic you want to post, and make a note of where you have it stored.
Go to My Controls - from the Top Menu
In the Left hand menu, select 'Change Personal Photo'
On the right now, where you see Change photo, copy or type the location of your stored pic.,
(Or click browse, and use the chose file box to find and select it, then press open)
Once you've done that, just click on 'Update Photo' - the board software will do the rest for you, including re-sizing it if necessary.

Hope to SEE you soon!

Gossip / Beach Bar
« on: July 08, 2004, 11:09:41 PM »
[attachment=3:attachment]
I know someone mentioned the new Beach Bar a few posts ago, and I replied that I thought it was quite good.

I was saving this until we got the new forums running - 'cause now you can take a look - and click on the pic for a better view!
Just another new feature of the forums.

Announcements / IMPORTANT: Upgrading Forums
« on: July 05, 2004, 01:25:57 AM »
Just to add to Andy's note - there are further server upgrades going on at IPS, my service provider.
This might mean that the site and/or forums are unavailable for a few hours a few times over the next week.
If you can't get on - just leave it a few hours and try again!

Announcements / Older posts
« on: January 30, 2004, 04:30:51 PM »
Just a quick reminder that normally when you view a topic you will only see postings made in the last 60 days.
If you want to go back to older posts - and there's a lot of information there, then go to the forum you are interested in.
You will see that the bottom lne of the panel listing current topics has three  drop down menus. The one on the right defaults to 'the last 60 days'.
To see the older posts, click on the arrow beside it, and select the last 90 days, or 'the beginning' - when you will see ALL posts made in that forum.
In some forums, this may run to several pages, and you can select the other pages on the bottom left of the screen.
Happy browsing.
John
NB - if you add a post to an old topic, it will again feature in the 'last 60 days' list, so you will easily see responses.
