I’ve used Moto Auto Plakias for more years than I care to remember.  Never had an issue and always reliable.  Alianthos Car Hire also reputable I believe.

At the risk of going on about something unrelated to Plakias, Thomas Cook have only gone and done the same for a family holiday (18 people in total) to Rhodes in July.  To make matters worse they have changed us to a flight before the schools break up!!!  Not a happy bunny trying to sort it out.
I have been happy with Thomas Cook in recent years but now I would not book flights with them too far in advance.

I had booked for 10 days next May into June but Thomas Cook have decided to cancel Friday flights from/to Glasgow.  At first glance their email notification suggested only a flight time/seat reservation change and I nearly missed the fact they had changed my return flight by 3 days!!

When I phoned up they offered either chance to cancel or come back 4 days later than planned ‘at no extra charge’.  Fortunately I had already sussed that their prices had dropped since I booked so I decided to cancel and rebook saving £175 in the process.

So alls we’ll that ends well and the saving will pay for my extra 4 nights accommodation in Plakias!

I share this just to put you on alert to read carefully any emails you might receive from Thomas Cook but also to point out that they are offering some very good prices at the moment - cheaper than EasyJet, Jet2 etc.

Huge waves today but sun now shining.  Warm and very humid.

I remember the tourist festival being cancelled 4 years ago due to wind/rain - a shame after all the work that went on.  We arrive Friday so will try and bring better weather with us - the forecasts are mixed to say the least, but we’re used to September/October weather in Plakias and hoping all will be fine.

Raining again!  But just a few spots.  Warm but overcast this afternoon.  Sea lovely and calm though.

Thanks for comments/suggestions.  Turned out free return flight not what it seemed - bit of a con if you ask me.
Free flight available going out June but no free flight back until August!  There again 2 months in Crete no bad thing if you could spare the time.
Ended up having to pay for flight back.  Still saved a bit though and Plakias here we come again!

Thanks for the info.  I have a few weeks to decide so will mull it over.  I have done Plakias twice a year on several occasions but maybe should try somewhere else??

Just to say this worth a try if you are prepared to persevere.  I won free flight for next summer (exc school hols).

Only problem I had just booked with Thomas Cook the week before!  What a dilemma do I come to Plakias twice or try something different?  Maybe Cephalonia as there are flights from Edinburgh?  Anyone been and can recommend a resort?

Hi basic price Glasgow to Heraklion £180 return for 26th September.  But I added on luggage, extra legroom seats and meals and worked out around £280.
I thought that quite good.  Been going independent now for around 15 years now.  Allows you a wider choice of accommodation and often you can pick a particular room. Better than leaving it the hands of the tour operator.

I suspected it was too early for dates I wanted but prompted me to search the Internet anyway.  Ended up with surprisingly good/cheap flights with Thomas Cook so don't rule them out!!  Way cheaper than previous years I've looked.

Plakias here we come again.

Plakias / Re: Maybe the last time?
« on: October 17, 2016, 12:09:50 PM »
This post and its sentiments resonate with Ruth and myself.
Each year we ask the same question:
Will this be our last visit to the old place?
It is and has been our favourite holiday destination since our children left home but:
We travel independently and with old Father Time starting to catch up with us, then the car journey brown to Plakias is becoming a major issue.
I now that we could use a taxi service but the convenience of having a car on call whist on holiday is a must for us.
And taxi transfers are not cheap.
One of our morning walks are now off limits
The walk to the Old Mill is no longer safe for those no longer sure of foot
The same goes for the path along the foot of the cliff, above the far end, and onto the tunnel thru the rock. Now not safe for us to use.
All resorts will change over the years and we feel that as long as they are not major changes, then so be it.
It is the Plakias people's village and it is up to them to change it as they think fit.
If we do not like/agree with those changes then we vote with our feet (and euros)
We are very, very undecided what to do next year.
BUT:
Where do you find another beach and swimming as good as Plakias?
Where do you find another resort as friendly as Plakias ?
Where do you find another resort with the choice and quality of tavernas as Plakia ?
And and and and................

Maybe one more time?
[just to let you know that the local Plakias car hire companies can arrange transfer from and to the airport as part of the deal.  That's what we do as it takes away the stress.]

Plakias hasn't lost it's magic for me but I understand where you are coming from.  When we first visited it was a dirt track to Souda (or boat trip) and a scramble over up and over the rocks from Damnoni to Amoudi.  The waterside tavernas were a bit basic and no brollies on any of the beaches.

People walked just about everywhere but I too noticed a large increase in the number of cars everywhere we went this year.  Having said that we too do now rent so can't really criticise!

Also remember the days of cold showers and communal fridges in the accommodation - wouldn't want to go back to that though!
