Title: First Visit
Post by: DOTTY on April 10, 2004, 10:43:11 PM
Hi just to let you know we are now getting excited   as it is nearing our fist visit (this Year) to Plakias. We also notice that on the events board we appear (I know we won't be) to be the first and last visitors of the year.

Do leave just a little bit of Plakias for us latecomers. We come late Sept / early Oct.

Hope everyone enjoys Plakias again this Summer.

Very proud to be classed as a regular by forum manager (Andy) - who surely deserves a medal, a subsidised visit to Plakias at least !! and many thanks. One day I might be classed as a regular in Plakias. This year will be our 7th visit and we still feel like (very welcome) newcomers and I suspect shall do so for the next many years to come.

Yes Dotty - we booked shortly after Christmas, and got an excellent deal with First Choice - cheaper than 'go it alone', and far less hassle overall for us, as there will be 15 of us this time! (I think - I didn't do the bookings).

I'm sure we'll catch up some other time - have a good one!

Well - how about this for an early booking   . First Choice 2005 bookings available today (1st day I think).
I have just booked 2 weeks in good old Stella pension from 27 September 2005  .
First Choice really do have good prices for the all in deal.

You are keen! I expect we will book again with First Choice soon after we get back from Stella this Sept. I know one thing, we won't leave it as late to book as we did this year (Jan) - we got the last available room in Stella. At less than £600 for the two of us, you can't go wrong.

£454 for two of us this time (Newcastle airport as well)

We're with First Choice this year - first time for about 5 years - but the prices were too good to miss.
We will certainly be checking out next years booking soon - probably have a chat about it when we are there in May, and do the bookings just after we get home.

Agree with you all on First Choice our two visits are with them, early and late visits we know, but for both (one at Costas Chrysoulla the second at Stella)  we only paid £749.

Sounds like a bargain Dotty.  We've booked with Olympic this year for 2 weeks in May at Costa Chrysoulla and are paying £630!  - the reason being Olympic were doing a flight returning to Bristol on the Friday evening instead of Sat. 5am, but now they have changed the flight to return on Saturday morning.  We'll have to look at First Choice next time

We had problems last year with Olympic changing our flights - 4 times in all! It meant that we ended up with 13 hours less time in Plakias     Here's hoping that First Choice are better.

Have to say that we've used Olympic for the past few years, and not really had trouble with them at all.
We're going First Choice this year due to prices and availability - interesting to see how they do, as a few years back they were not that impressive!

This is severely tempting fate, but for the past 6 years we have had zero problems with First Choice - except for the variability of their reps - which hasn't affected us anyway (just one very poor one). Basically nothing so far has ever gone wrong but the test is really how they would cope if anything does go wrong and I hope we don't have to find out. Their reputation in the industry seems to be not too brilliant, but for us they happen to fly to the right place (Plakias) with - for us - perfect accommodation (Stella) and from our local airport down the road (Newcastle) all at a very reasonable price (£454 for two weeks for two of us, late September). The night flights are a bind but it is worth putting up with that for the price and in particular the flight from a local regional airport. The flights alone from up here in the North would exceed the cost of the complete holiday which also includes transfers so there is no scope for us going it alone.

This is the first time I've posted, so I hope it works. We've always used First Choice and have always been ok. Cheap and cheerful and worth the overnight travelling and that painful early morning airport transfer on the journey home! See some of you in Ostraco's no doubt. 20 days and counting.

We used Argo Holidays (found on an internet search).
Stayed at the Apollo self catering 4-18 May. £309 each flying from Manchester at 0600 & from Heraklion at 1300.
The only downside is you then have to add taxi transfer at £109.00.
As we had planned to hire a car for a week we decided to make it 2 weeks starting & ending at the airport, so the taxi transfer went towards the car hire.
Total for the holiday was £970 for 2 people and 2 weeks car hire which we thought was not bad.
Next time we go I'm thinking of booking a cheap short notice holiday to anywhere on Crete and tell them we don't want the accomodation. Hire a car at the airport and then use "rent rooms" and spend 3 or 4 days at different places.
We could not fault Argo at all. Flights were with Air Malta, on time and the roomiest aircraft we have ever flown (Airbus 320 I think it was). I think they use Excel Airline later in the year.
All in all a really good holiday with no snags.
