Plakias / Lampyland

This is an open letter to all members and guests.
The member Lampyland has been quiet for over ten days and I suspect he is back in hospital. He has been seriously ill for some time.
The one thing that is inspiring about Lampyland is his love, not just of Plakias, but of Crete itself. He grew up on the island and whilst he now lives in Wales his heart is with the mountains, forests and beaches of Crete.
Lampyland is the best thing about Plakias Forum. He stands head and shoulders above the rest of us. So please everyone can you do more than just wish him well. When you are on holiday in Plakias set aside one day for Lampyland. Tempting as it is to spend every day on the beach, why not one day go and explore some of Lampyland’s beloved Crete. You won’t regret it.

I suspect that quite  a lot of people would find 'beach nudism' an alternative lifestyle choice practiced by slightly odd people. The best thing about Plakias beaches is that they are clothing optional and people in all forms of dress or none seem to coexist fairly comfortably.

I seem to have touched a nerve. But you are well out of touch. It is now school holiday time here in Plakias and both Souda and Shinaria are now totally textile at the weekend because they are used by the locals and their families. Which is lovely. But it is simply not done to strip off. So much for your happy coexistance.
Perhaps for the moment draper10 you could explain to everyone why you find the term 'textile' divisive. And I don't think any sensible person equates going skinny dipping with 'an alternative lifestyle choice practised by slightly odd people'. That's just nonsense.
Going home tomorrow. So no more postings for a bit.
Sorry Barny. Now I've said my bit I'll shut up.

Quite right Draper - very sensible and balanced view.  I do agree with your dislike of the 'term' textile' too - it is very divisive and insulting.  Sometimes I am on the beach naked, sometimes topless and sometimes both halves of my bikini are in place.  People tend to fall off their sunbeds laughing whatever I do :-).  Glad you had a good holiday :-)

Why is the term 'textile' divisive and insulting? It has been around now for so long. The term 'naturist' I find insulting when people call me that. I'm a beach nudist. The term 'naturist' conjures up images of slightly odd people with 'alternative' lifestyle choices. Or of people who spend their weekends at sunclubs. Or who go naked rambling. I simply like swimming without a costume. And I hate sunbathing in a wet costume. So uncomfortable.

Plakias / Cretan Safari

There I was with my wife on Micro Amoudi. We went for a swim and looked back up the beach. Above the beach on the dirt track were about a dozen Cretan Safari jeeps with the people in them standing up taking pictures of everyone on the beach. The lead jeep had someone with a big video camera filming it all.
Does anyone else here on Plakias Forum think that this is quite disgusting and should be stopped? Or am I over-reacting?

Went to Phaistos and Matala today. Phaistos interesting but too hot to think today. At 4 euros to get in, it's a bit of a bargain imho but some of the restoration could be a bit more sympathetic.
Matala............ weeelllllll! It's a bit of a 60's theme park, particularly now with the beach music festival next weekend, but is a lovely place. It's just such a shame that it's overrun by hundreds of versions of me (ie tourists!). Go,'cos it's lovely, but don't expect Joni Mitchell to pop out singing Carrie. No 'scratchy rock 'n roll' more reggae. The first song lyrics that sprang to mind were from The Eagles. 'You call some place paradise, kiss it goodbye'.

Didn't 'Big Yellow Taxi' by Joni Mitchell spring to mind? 'They paved paradise and put up a parking lot'. That's Matala for you now.

Plakias / Re: Plakias far end v Souda

VERY windy today. Plakias beach not really an option so we did some exploring in the car and then went to Souda about 5pm. Our first time there and we will go back. I don't know what previous years have been like but Plakias has had an influx of Russians and East Europeans who give the beach at Plakias a very tacky feel. Most of them arrive by bus on a day trip and don't go up to the far end but all the same. Not nice. Souda has a much nicer feel to it and the beach is so clean.
Then we had a drink at the Delfini taverna. We were the only people there which was a shame because it is really nice.

Have to say that despite not living in the SE of England, I've never found the meals in Plakias expensive. Some are better than others, and it's not always the most expensive which are the best. Had a couple of beautiful lunches at Delfini in Souda which were around 15euros for two with drinks. And we have in the past cooked in the apartment from time to time.
'A Bar' in Plakias, however, charged me 15euros for 2 coffees and 2 Metaxas, which we bought the following in night in Costas Chrysoula for 9. Now THAT was a rip off. Went back once more to check it hadn't been a mistake on my or their part............ it wasn't. Hell of a price for a comfy seat!!

Thank you draper10 for the information about Delfini. We will try it out for lunch one day. But about Plakias being expensive.....

My wife went to one of the bars along the front with a friend and they were charged 12 Euros for two ice cream sundaes. As you say - Hell of a price for a comfy seat!!

My thoughts exactly, Mike.

A shared starter, 2 mains and 1 litre of wine NEVER cost us more than 30 euros, even with a tip.
And we have yet to leave any tavern in Plakias feeling hungry.

We have travelled widely to very many Greek resorts, island and mainland, but Plakias is by far the most reasonably priced place we have found.

My wife and I hired a car today and went to Margarites because we are interested in ceramics. We had an excellent lunch for two in the little square under a beautiful shady tree. Total price for two was 14 Euros.
I guess if you live in London or the SE then 30 Euros may seem a snip. But for those of us who live in the real world and have a mortgage 30 Euros for an indifferent, samey meal is a rip off.

Plakias / Plakias far end v Micro Amoudi

My wife and I went yesterday to Micro Amoudi for the first time. And what fun it turned out to be. We were taken there by a couple of gay Dutch guys because we find the far end at Plakias rather dull. If you are over 60 and just want to lie in the sun and read all day then I guess it's fine. But Micro Amoudi is quite different. Access is not that easy so there was a much younger crowd there. The place felt alive and a little bit naughty! In the beach bar at the back of the beach Marianna (I think) is a stunner!
Getting in and out of the water is not for the faint hearted. The angle of the beach at the water's edge is so steep that we found the best way to get into the water was to lie on one's tummy facing the sea and then wait for a big wave to come up the beach. The wave picks you up and then you just aquaplane at high speed into the sea! My wife decided against doing this. One for the lads I suppose.

My wife and I are currently staying at Manolis Apartments. Great location and has a pool. We are in the new block which has spacious rooms with simple but adequate cooking facilities. The prices in the restaurants in Plakias are a bit of a rip off so we eat in most nights and then go out for a drink. And there are other young people staying (we are in our early thirties). Good fun. Irene and Manolis are very friendly and so are their kids. We booked here because it rated highly on Tripadvisor. We are glad we are not staying at Morpheas, Livicon or the Lamon. They have great views out to sea and are probably OK early in the season but they are right on the main road and must be very hot and noisy in July and August.
