Holiday Companies / Re: Small Planet Airlines
« on: August 09, 2013, 09:07:17 AM »
We have gone independent for many years now as we used to hate the long transfers with Olympic and have had many which lasted well over 3 hours!
We contact the apartment owner by email.
Book flights with Jet2 which have always been excellent & without a hitch.
Hire a car from Just Car Rentals for the duration, excellent service and no hidden charges.
Last time we got off the plane, reclaimed our luggage and were in our hire car in less than 40 mins.
The drive over takes between 1.5 & 2 hours depending on traffic but it is very straightforward and it couldn't be easier.
Going independent may work out more expensive but it gives you so much freedom.
Also having the car gives us the option to visit the surrounding countryside or go on excursions if the wind gets too strong.
We met a family during our stay who had flew with Small Planet from Birmingham and had lost a full day of their holiday due to last minute flight changes, they were dreading the return flight and were constantly having to check to make sure it was still on!
I totally agree with everything you said there PL and I've not used a travel company for many years either. To email the apartments for vacancies and booking a flight is so easy and like you I pick up a car from the airport (using 'Just') and returned it to the airport when I left...... and I got a flight to Chania which in my opinion is much prefered than Heraklion.
It is more expensive, but the freedom is there to organise your own holiday and to have transport waiting for you at the airport gets you to Plakias in no time. I always get an early morning flight out, then I can get into the room, get organised and be out on the town by 3-4.00pm and settle in nicely.
I could possible use an agent again, but I would always get a car for the transfers and have the availability of it for two weeks. (I hate that bus transfer, it took 4 hours once it was yuk!)
Highly recomended, but it can be costly, but not excessively so! There's only the one agent from the UK going to Plakias now and if they withdraw..... private travelling can be fun and to have the freedom it gives you makes the holiday so much more satisfying.

PlakChat / Re: Plakias-On My Own ?

Thanks everyone..you have all been a great help..

I'm not sure what I will do yet..but what you have said will certainly help when I make a decision (probably on the night before the flight !)

I guess its a choice between -sit round weeping in rainy London or sit round weeping in the hot sun !

Thanks
Well Robbie, did you go?
I was in a similar situation, but my partner and I were fine, but she was ill so I had three years of not going to Plakias but then the stress of the situation overtook and I had to get away!
It was difficult for a few days as the memories came flooding back but once the shoulders had relaxed a bit I quite enjoyed myself and went back again for several years after that, but I got bored with my own company during those times when 'you need some one close and to be alone with' if you know what I mean, so I've been having a break for a few years looking for a suitable companion (my partner passed on BTW). I'll be back though I have some ashes to scatter! Good luck to you Robbie and I do hope your return, if you did get there was enjoyable.

This topic goes on and on.... I wonder why some  people are so set on getting the far end changed to textile ..... I feel there would be no more demand from UK holiday companies  for this resort than there is now (2 I think im  correct in stating ) so why change something so popular and established?
We started holidaying in Plakias purely because of the naturist beach .We simply like an allover tan and swimming in the sea unclothed.Weve tried the naturist club thing but its not our scene so maybe we arent true naturists. We d just like to point out that  every time  we  have been at the beach there have been families using it,some clothed, some naturist  .
The resort has its own appeal but having visited for the past 12 years we can honestly say we wouldnt return if the naturist beach was closed.
After a day at the beach we enjoy a few drinks at the beach bar and then wander back to our apt.
We would not choose Plakias as a resort if it had "normal" beaches, in our opinion we find it a  little boring in the evenings, same old chat ,same music videos, so once youve enjoyed a pleasant meal theres nothing much going on.I dont want discos or tv bars but theres not even a decent stroll to take as theres no real  harbour etc.
We are certain that ,as the facilities are now , Plakias would NOT appeal to families as a holiday resort so why argue the case at all?
This is just our opinion.
My sentiments entirely and a few years ago I answered a guy who was making his first trip with his wife and two small children and told him exactly that. I've no idea if he still went as I don't remember a response.
Re: The far end, it's a total unoffensive area located at the 'far end' of the beach for visitors to take advantage of and be naked if they want to, that's why it's at the far end away from the rest of the 'ordinary' sunworshippers. It's not seen from the road and it's not overlooked by any high rise buildings as far as I'm aware, so why all all this discussion about it. You go there because you know it's there and want to make use of it, and if you don't you don't! Easy peesy, simples!

Gossip / Re: Freddie & Emma
« on: May 15, 2013, 09:10:01 AM »
Sad news John, Freddie was one of the major characters in Plakias and always had a smile for everyone and Emma was lovely. I never ordered a drink in the Levicon 'cause she always knew what I was drinking and it just appeared automatically. I'm sure they'll be missed by everyone! Enjoy your stay John.

Spot on Mickey!! If I use Olympic again, I'll pick up a car at the airport and get back to Plakias in 90ish minutes.
If it's an early morning flight you can be in the resort by 3.00pm check out the room, get some stocks in the room and still have time for a walkabout and a couple of drinks before dinner.
Then watch the Olympic bus turn up!!

Hi Mike,

Thanks for you comments,
We are moving to the Central Coast, NSW, somewhere around Gosford, about a hour or so North of Sydney, as close to the sea as we can get.
A location similar to the Livicon would suit us fine  ;D

Peter&Dawn

Don't know it. I've done Melbourne, Sydney, Gold Coast and Brisbane.

My wife's late uncle used to live in Ocean Grove about an hour out of Melbourne, but he wasn't placed as well as the Livicon!

Mike

Just a quick message to Pete and Dawn. Their leaving the UK this evening for their new life in Aus.
Kali Taxidi guys and best wishes for the next four years and beyond. You'll be missed in Plakias by your numerous new friends and hopefully you'll remember us all and the fact that I introduced Plakias to you. Keep in touch OK?

Just read the headlines in the Mail about the weather up’t North. It looks a bit nasty guys for anyone north of Manchester and the further north you go the worse it gets, so take care ok.
Us down here basking in the mild temperatures of the southern riviera are thinking about about you OK!! Summers coming... ;)

Try hitting the Plakias Map link (top right hand corner of this page) and hitting Amoudi in the 'Beaches' index. Simples!!
