Title: New site
Post by: ostraco on November 21, 2011, 08:02:57 PM
I've been aware for several years that the information on the 'Welcome to Plakias' site is out of date - and in places, just wrong! I kept promising myself I would get down to a complete update, and this message is to let you know that I've started work.
Ploppy and I had a lot of discussion about hosting etc - and you'll be aware that the site now sits on a new UK based server. We've also got this swish new forum - all credit to Ploppy, as I couldn't do it without him.
He kept the old site up and running for me while i worked on the new one. It's years since I tackled designing web pages, and I was so rusty I even stared an evening class to try to jog my memory. I'm surprised how things have changed since the site first went live in '98.
I finished my first go at two new pages today, and I hope you'll have a look at them for me, and let me know what you think. Comments on design and content are welcome, and suggestions on what I've done so far and what else is needed  would be much appreciated.
While I'm doing this work, I will keep the old site live, and put the new one at  www.ostraco.co.uk (http://www.ostraco.co.uk). At first you'll just see links to the pages, then I'll pull it together as a site as things develop (and I remember how to do it!).
I know this is a cheeky way to develop a page, but I feel the strength of Welcome to Plakias is in the input from others!
Feel free to tell me what's bad (and good?) - message me through the board, respond here, or mail me: ostraco@plakias.co.uk.

Good to see you back on the forum.
The new site looks really nice: it has a "clean" feel to it.  The Links page is very useful.  A good job so far.  :)

Thanks Noopsy - it's good to be back. It's one of the many benefits of retirement. Life's been hectic for the last few years (although I always managed to get my Plakias visit in), but now I can take time to do what I really want.
I'm pleased you like the look - I wanted to get away from the blue and white, and make the whole thing cleaner and less cluttered. I always thought the Links page was important, and will hope to add to it as time goes on! Any suggestions?

Hi All,
I'm still working on the new site. Please help.
I don't usually use the hole in the walls, but want to add in the locations.
I've got one at Allianthos Hotel. Am I correct in saying there's also one at the Allianthos Car Hire Office in the main street?
Also, is there a third (near Platea Bar?)
Thanks

John,
There is one to the left of the Alianthos beach hotel reception, There is one at the Alianthos car rental office and yes there is one to the right of Platia.
There used to be one at the old town hall but I think it was taken away?
If you all have a 'whip round' for my ticket I will go over and have a look?

                                     Barny.

Cheers Barny - I'm working on the site now, having just got home from the gym.
I'll add those details in - will be posting another new page soon. I forgot how time consuming this web stuff can be!

You're right - the one in the old town hall (used to be the Swing Bar) has gone.

Hope the whip round goes well - I'll come with you and collect that Mythos!

Me again,
I've just completed the first draft of the new Frequently Asked Questions page, and posted it here http://www.ostraco.co.uk/faqs%20play.html (http://www.ostraco.co.uk/faqs%20play.html)

I finished my first go at two new pages earlier in the week, and I hope you'll have a look at them for me, and let me know what you think. Comments on design and content are welcome, and suggestions on what I've done so far and what else is needed  would be much appreciated.
While I'm doing this work, I will keep the old site live, and put the new one at  www.ostraco.co.uk (http://www.ostraco.co.uk). At first you'll just see links to the pages, then I'll pull it together as a site as things develop

In your FAQ section of your new site you say that you wonder what happen to the "Alianthos Express" road train which used to ply its trade in Plakias. As I understand it was not really powerful enough to cope with the rugged terrain around Plakias. It was relocated to the Plaka / Thissio area of Athens where it takes tourists around central Athens!

The new site looks very good. The new forum is a great improvement.
Congratulations to John and Paul
The Town Hall + the Mayor are now in Spilli.

What is the difference between sr member hero member ETC?

          Barny.

It is based on the number of posts made by a member. As you have made 500+ you are a Hero.
This is just the default bahaviour and can be changed. Let me know if you have any good ideas.

Thanks everyone for new information and feedback - I'll be building in info as it's received.

I had heard rumours about the train - good to know for certain what happened! Thanks Rogataber.

I wasn't aware the Mayor had moved to Spilli - it's a pity he didn't leave instructions to keep the old 'town hall' looking respectible before he moved on. The place is a bit of an eyesore now.
I know very little about politics in Plakais, and how the town is run - can anyone fill me in? It might make an interesting addition to the site - and an email address might be good, as I'm sure he'd like to hear from the visitors the town relies on!

Well I said to myself that I would get the new site live by Christmas! It's a shame so many other things got in the way.
If you go along to www.ostraco.co.uk (http://www.ostraco.co.uk) you'll be able to see the results of my efforts to date. It's clearly not ready to go live properly yet, but I think what I've done so far will give you an idea!

I wanted to give easy access to the forums from the main page - I hope you like the way this has worked out. I have checked in 3 different browsers, but if you have any problems, please let me know, and tell me which browser you use.

I've been keeping all comments received, and will begin actioning these over the next few days. Please keep them coming - I particularly want more info on taxi charges, and a couple of pictures for the 'TOWN' page. If you have a panorama type picture that would fit in the top margin where it says 'Welcome to Plakias' that would be most welcome.

Thanks for all comments and mails so far - please keep them coming! Merry Christmas!!!!!!!

The main page is coming along nicely.  However, reading the Town and FAQs sections I noticed a few typos which I've detailed in the attached doc.
With regard to places where you can access the internet, the Morpheas can be included, and wi-fi is also available there.

Happy New Year!

I've got a couple of panorama shots, you're welcome to them if they can be of any use... I've tried uploading them to the gallery but can't see how (post count too low perhaps?)

They're up on my flickr account, if you need them at a better resolution, PM me your email address and I'll send any on (big files tho ~2mb)

Cheers! :)

I managed to get a little more done today. Raymond, I included a link to your site - and Noopsy, many thanks - typos now corrected!
Other bits and pieces added in from mails and previous posts.
Next job is to get some better pictures included, and sort out a proper banner.

Any comments gratefully received - especially additions or errors. Please check at www.ostraco.co.uk (http://www.ostraco.co.uk)

I've found a few more typos - sorry!  :(  They're in the attached doc.  Also don't forget to add the fact that wi-fi internet connection is also available at the Morpheas (I will try it out this summer).
