PlakChat / Snorkelling masks
« on: September 08, 2017, 06:30:02 PM »
When I was in Plakias this year I noticed a number of snorkelers using a new type of mask.  It covered the face in full and had a little breathing pipe protruding from the top.  Does anyone know anything about them?  Are they better than the usual goggles/snorkel combination?

I'm surprised that no one has commented on this yet.  Has anyone else noticed the stone 'structures' at the far end of the Far End?  I believe most, if not all, are the work of the chap who looks after the sun loungers.  I didn't take my DSLR with me to Plakias so haven't any pictures to post but surely other people must have taken some shots of them.  I thought they were most interesting and artistic.  What does everybody else think?

Holiday Companies / Expedia
« on: July 29, 2014, 06:36:22 PM »
This topic is probably of more interest to those of you travelling independently.  I don't know how you make your travelling arrangements but I 've always used Expedia ever since I started coming to Plakias.  To be fair, I've never had cause for complaint but this year has been an exception.  For a return flight (business class) they quoted £607.85, which is roughly what I paid last year.  However, when it came to actually paying, the price shot up to £1,460.45!  When I queried this, Expedia said that the airline can suddenly change the fare between the time that the fare is advertised and when it is actually bought.  I checked Expedia's site 5 days later, and guess what - they were still advertising that journey at the lower price.  Seems to me that they have taken to luring people with low fares knowing that a higher one will actually be payable.  Needless to say, I will be closing my account with them, and using a different agency in future.

PlakChat / Piranhas sighted in Plakias Bay!

No, not really...but is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that the fish in the sea have acquired an increasing taste for human flesh?  Time was when you could stay in the water as long as you liked unmolested.  Then, early in the morning you might get a nip.  Now you can get bitten if you go in in the early afternoon.  The fish seem to have lost all fear of us; I've seen a group make a bee-line for my legs the moment I plant them on the sea bed.  And they swim up inquisitively when I'm snorkelling.  Now where did I put that spear gun...

Gossip / Rachi?
« on: August 23, 2013, 05:08:32 PM »
After finishing my meal at the Gorgona the other night I asked for the bill.  The owner said something to me in Greek.  All I could make out was the word "rachi".  I asked him if he meant "raki" to which he replied, "Μπραβο!".  This was odd as the "ch" sound does not exist in the Greek language.  So, to all you linguists out there: is "rachi" the Cretan dialect for "raki"?

Gossip / Plakias Blues

I guess we are all suffering from them now with our next trip so far away, and Britain currently gripped by freezing weather.  So for a quick pick-me-up how about a short trip to the Maldives?  I've just come back from a week's holiday there, and feel sure that the blast of sunshine and temperatures up to 31 deg. C will help to keep me going until the summer.

Gossip / Mythos commercial
« on: May 15, 2012, 06:49:28 PM »
When I was in film school we had to make, as an exercise, a commercial of a product or service of our choice.  No prizes for guessing what I went for!  ;)

Where to eat...or not! / Restaurants in Plakias
« on: January 31, 2012, 12:16:04 PM »
I've recently finished drawing up a list of restaurants which I've settled on when I visit Plakias.  It's not a comprehensive list of all restaurants there, and the comments I make focus on features that are of importance to me.  In short, I've produced it purely for my own benefit.  But others, particularly those new to the resort, may find it useful as a quick overview of what is available in the way of places to eat out.

Forum and Website discussion / Anniversaries
« on: June 18, 2008, 09:30:52 PM »
Looking at the Board Panel I was amazed to discover that I was shown as celebrating my 4th anniversary today.   But I've been married for over 20 years!    And then I realised that the date referred to the anniversary of joining the forum.  Silly me.  : " />

Holiday Companies / Heraklion Bus Station to Heraklion Airport
« on: July 03, 2007, 08:50:32 PM »
Has anyone made this journey by bus? If so, could they tell me:
a. where can you buy a ticket for the bus; and
b. on walking up to the main road leading to the airport (I believe it's called Ikarou) do you turn left or right to reach the nearest bus stop.

Thanks in anticipation.

Plakias / Fowl (at) play?
« on: September 20, 2006, 04:13:53 PM »
I'm surprised that no one so far appears to have mentioned the "far end's" latest attraction.  I'm referring to the 2 pairs of geese that have taken up residence there.  They've taken a gander   at the rest of beach , and have decided that, clearly, the "far end" is the place to be.  And who can blame them?  With a stunning location to waddle around in, running fresh water to cool off in or slake their thirst (they haven't heard of Mythos), and the company of "cool" humans who feed them the occasional tasty tit-bit, what more can a bird want?

PlakChat / Health "Alert"
« on: August 08, 2004, 09:23:26 PM »
This topic is for the information of those who have never travelled to Greece/Crete before.

Being such a person as described above, and travelling independently its down to me to do the necessary homework.  Part of this involved running a routine check on Ceefax for immunisation requirements for Greece.  Not expecting to find anything I was astonished to see that vaccination against Yellow Fever was recommended for anyone travelling to that country.    So I got onto the DOH website for clarification, and found that this vaccination is only required for people arriving from an infected country, and specifically not for anyone coming directly from the UK.

So relax and ignore what it says on Ceefax.  No jabs for Greece are required.

PlakChat / Request for info
« on: June 20, 2004, 12:26:07 PM »
I'm holidaying in Plakias for the first time this year, and was wondering if anyone out there could advise me on a couple of basics:

1. Arrival.  After the bus has dropped you off in town, how far is to walk to accomodation at the eastern end of the beach?

2. Crime.  What are the levels?  I mean, how safe is it to leave your things on the beach unattended while you go in to the sea for a dip, the taverna for a drink, etc.?

3. Insect life.  Are there any mosquitos (they love me, unfortunately), and, if so, how troublesome are they?

Thanks.
