I haven't been to a welcome meeting for years and this year in Plakias was my 10th time and always with a tour company. This year however I did make the effort just to find out why FC was pulling and I must salute Gary for his honesty. He did tell me that if Plakias ever gets back onto the FC portfolio he would be volunteering for the reps job.
The meeting consisted of me and one other older couple and that was it, and I didn't have to correct any of the spiel, he had done his homework very well.
I know you've been reading the site Gary, hope your ok and look forward to seeing you back in Plakias sometime.

Where to stay / Albatross Apartments

Re. Aghia Galini. I have never been there but have always remembered the comment in my ancient (late 1980s) Let's Go, Greece which said.

"Once a peaceful fishing village, Aghia Galini is now a casualty of the tourist trade and about as Greek as Frankfurt."

Well, I have been to Frankfurt and it isn't very Greek!

I totally agree with Mike G, I've been to Gallini a few times and it is very busy during the day and it must buzz at night. The place is full of bars, restaurants and souvanier shops and beware if your not too fit it is extreemly hilly with cobble stone roads. This could be a resort anywhere in Europe ie Spain.

Holiday Companies / Kosmar

I went to the agent last Saturday with a list of 15 combinations of dates and apartments and got the first one on the list with no problems.
The following 4 were all available too.
Try Olympic for the Dora or the Kostas Chrissy on the 30.08, looks like plenty of spaces, unless they sold them all on Saturday. Sorry!

I wanted to book the Lamon with Kosmar but they are not allowing any 'singles' in any of their rooms, but they did offer me the Apollon with a £13 suppliment per night. You can guess what I told them to do with it!
I had a day flight back from Heraklion this year and it was a horrendous experience, I am aiming for Chania in 2005!

Where to go / Gravel tracks

Hi Wakefossil
Get hold of the 'Road' Edition maps, they are pretty well up to date, I used them this year to find the type of road you are looking for so I could get my jeep dirty.
I also confirm what Martyn said, lots of white roads down there and yes, Gallini is only worth stopping for some refreshment, you'll need it after that road. Great fun!

Hi All
I tried to book the Lamon last night with Kosmar, but they would not allow any single person booking in any of the appartments. They did however offer me the Apollon but they wanted £120 per week, single suppliment.
I'm still looking!

Plakias / Concert
« on: September 21, 2004, 10:01:11 AM »
Hi All
Regarding the booklet, I had a look at the website on the back and it duplicates everything that's in the book, so if you haven't got the book go to www.plakias-filoxenia.gr and it will give you all the info except the 'actual' locations.
Agree about the map though, I tried to do one a while ago but it got a bit complicated we need something simple.

Plakias / Concert
« on: September 17, 2004, 08:46:40 AM »
Hi all
Can anyone tell me what the concert was all about on Tuesday 31.08 in the car park in the front of the Navaro? I asked around and all I got was that, there is a band in town and they are going to play. Well I sort of worked that one out for myself!
I get the impression that it might have been a local PR exercise as the organisers were handing out booklets with all the local contact numbers for the area’s accommodation. So if anyone needs any telephone/fax numbers or email addresses for any of the apartments, hotels or studios in the area. I’m your man.

Plakias / IM BACK!
« on: September 13, 2004, 02:26:29 PM »
Hi All
Got back from Plakias on 07.09, it’s been four years since my last visit, or anywhere else for that matter. I’ve had a few probs, so holidays have been on hold.
It was quite emotional as I turned left and down the Plakias hill, mainly because I had to leave Tina back in the UK.
It hasn’t changed a bit, a couple of new bars but basically the place I know. It was good to see John O again and I apologise for not getting back to you on that drink John. Next year you’re on, and you will probably be sorry you asked. This year was an attempt to get back to reality and I am still finding my feet.
I’ve been keeping in touch with the board, but for obvious reasons, my contributions have been minimal.
I followed the First Choice saga with interest, as I had booked the Irida with them and attempted all the things that others had tried, to get some info for next year. That’s why I grabbed Gary at the welcome meeting (my first one) and got the truth. I, and probably everyone who spoke to Gary appreciated his honesty. I know Gary has been reading the message board, and I would just like to say that you’re a nice guy Gary and you are doing a great job. I know you are going to be sorry to leave Plakias at the end of the season as you have acquired Plakiasitos, it’s a disease which is not easy to get rid of and I think that you have a lot of sympathy for the problems that FC has caused the regulars.
It’s great to be back on the board and hopefully I can make some contribution, I’m going up the agent on Saturday to book for next year, now I know who’s taking over.
One question: Who nicked the ‘Welcome to Plakias’ sign at the top of the hill? Souvenirs are one thing Guy's, but that’s not nice!
