Where to eat...or not! / It's tradition
« on: August 15, 2003, 11:18:41 PM »
There are so many good places to eat in Plakias. Earlier this year we were there for 2 weeks. The only places we ate at twice were Sophia (on the front), Gio Mar and (shame I can't remember the name) that place where Gina works and they do Morocan food, just up the road from Ali and Dave's supermarket.

First and last meals were in Sophia. That's the tradition bit. It always used to be Glaros, but since Nikos moved on, we've followed him to Sophia.

Apart from the 3 above, places I will revisit:

Castro, looking over the village and worth the walk
Lysseos, just by the bridge - get there early, as it's always busy, and some of the specials run out!
Ariadne - just cause it's great there
Christos - no one can get enough of the shrimp saganaki

Out of town, Platia in Mirthios - get there early and watch the sunset.
& take a taxi up to Selia and eat in the town taverna. This is a great little place, now run by Manolis that used to work in Ostraco. Limited menu, but great food.

And with our forthcoming meal in mind - I will admit I've never eaten in Medusa.

Announcements / A few changes
« on: August 15, 2003, 07:18:50 PM »
Just a few little changes to report:

1. I removed the 'Bad News' forum - seems there isn't any!

2. At John's (compage) suggestion, I have added a new section in the Plakias forum - Where to eat. Let's hear about the good and bad places.

3. Take a look at the very top of the board. Right next to 'Welcome to Plakias' on the left, there is a new link - Portal. Click here, and you'll get a summary of what's been going on on the board recently.

4. As the number of posts is building up, I have re-set the forums to show postings made only during the last 60 days. If you want to see older posts, there is a box at the bottom right of the forum listing which allows you to select all posts.

As usual, please let me know in the Forum Problems, Feedback and Features section what you think.

Can I also just publicly thank Andy for getting us through the upgrade!

Another point - you can now include your photo in your profile - so when you're in town, everyone will be able to recognise you.

Now, I'vw got a decent pic somewhere.......

PlakChat / Sad news
« on: May 03, 2003, 05:57:58 PM »
Many Plakias regulars will know Kelly, either as the Olympic Rep, or more recently the wife of Zak, one of the local taxi drivers.
I first met her when she was with Olympic, and for several years she really looked after us.
With the arrival for her son, Nickolaki, she went part time, but still was there when we needed her.

Things became difficult for her, and a complex array of symptoms were eventually revealed as Hodgkins Disease. She struggled to overcome it - returning to the UK for treatment several times. Sadly, she finally lost the fight, and passed away earlier this year.

With deepest sympathy to Zak and Nickolaki, I thought that everyone that knows them should be aware before they see them this year.

And Kelly - you'll always be one of the sunniest parts of Plakias to me!

PlakChat / Your last chance...
« on: May 03, 2003, 05:39:29 PM »
A little bird in the village told me that this will be the last year that the (in)famous Meltemi Dance Club will be running.
Word has it that the land it occupies has been bought out by the folks who own Alianthos, for the development of a 5 star Hotel.

Mixed reactions from me - I don't like to see too much building in the village - and certainly not spreading too far east. A furthermore, I have had so many good nights in Meltemi in my time! And I hope it won't mean too great an increase in visitor numbers.

Will this mean that we see the Hexagon back in business? That would be good.

Have you heard anything about this?

Gossip / 2003 news

Well the season's started. Some lucky Olympic customers will be there already, First Choice getting going soon.
The solo travellers will be enjoying the walking and wildlife - and staying for Greek Easter if they are lucky!

Ken and Kathy seem to be the first of our regulars going - setting off next week. Hope you have a good trip - looking forward to the first of the 2003 news!

Announcements / Any bad news
« on: March 15, 2003, 11:32:19 AM »
I've added a new section into the Ostraco's Bar forum.

Called 'Any bad news', it's for talking about the downside of Plakias.

This could be amusing (failing to get home after a night at Meltemi?) - or a warning to others (forgetting a torch when staying at the Olive Groves and getting lost in the dark?).

Either way - it might give others something to think about, and help them avoid a problem.

What happened to you.........

Thanks Andy,
I must admit it took me a while to get used to using the tags!
I find the Preview Post button very useful - so I can see what my message will look like before I post it to the group.

Announcements / Maps
« on: February 02, 2003, 12:28:24 PM »
Maps have been mentioned many times, and I really would like to get hold of a good one - especially showing where all the different places to stay are.

For starters, I have scanned in a small (and I guess not totally accurate) map of the village. I don't want to put this on the site yet - as I pinched it a while ago from a brochure.

I thought that the forum members would be discrete about this - until I get permission to use it - or find something better.

Go to MAP for a quick look.

Feedback please! ! ! !

Announcements / Avatars
« on: November 14, 2002, 11:55:26 PM »
If you'd like to put an avatar next to your postings (like my little OstracoMan), then Andy has now enabled a feature on the board so that you can easily do so.
All you need to do is get a logo, picture or design saved somewhere on your PC. It must measure no more than 64 by 64 pixels. (I used Photoshop to do mine)
Go to My Controls, then select Edit Avatar Settings on the left hand side.
In the section headed 'Your image avatars', click the browse button next to Upload an avatar, and click on the avatar file you saved.
Press the 'Add this avatar to my profile' button, and away you go.

Let me know if you have any problems!

PlakChat / Sometimes...

I was watching BBC News 24 at lunchtime today. The weatherman said that Greece has had 5 inches of rain in the last 36 hours! It's been pretty wet in Plymouth - but not that bad!
