where to eat...or not!
« on: June 27, 2005, 02:54:56 PM »
Hi, just got back after 2 weeks of pure pleasure !!....Secret Nest and Glaros are now closed.
Recommendations:-
best Restaurant overall....GOI-MA
best pre-dinner drinks....Bar of the Hotel Livicon(on seafront)
best after-dinner drinks and quiet/friendly bar....On the Rocks(last bar going out of Plakias towards Souda)
best mine-hosts.....Theo and Maria ( on the Rocks)
Restaurant with most varied menu...Haraksas (steaks/chili sausages/lemon chicken/grilled goat)
Restaurants with best views......Panorama and Plateus(think that's how you spell it) in Mrthios
Taverna with most enjoyable Cretan night......Peligremnos (Far end) on a Thursday night
well that's my choices but I'm sure wherever you go you will have a great time.M

Thanks Marmaliser - that is interesting and useful
Where is GOI-MA-and what makesit so good? I cannot place it
I assume you mean Harakas - next to Lysseos =which is definitely my favourite
I hope that Dionysos is still in the Livicon ?

What happened to the Secret Nest? Whattapitty!!!   Is there something else in the house now and what happened to the family? No rooms to let anymore? [we lived there for two weeks many years ago and we really liked the place. Whatabout Nikos Papadakis? Strange... It seems almost as if the "business plakias" is going down a little bit in the last years...?

And for Nikos: We'll even try the eyes if you only reopen the Secret Nest!!!

There is an extensive menu here, but the pastitsio I had in May was the smallest and worst I have ever had in Greece. A bit like macaroni cheese, i.e. no meat. My three year old granddaughter could have managed to eat it, it was so small.

For a good meal I would go to Gorgona also on the main road on the way to the bakery shop.

They always have a large selection available.

A tip for all the taverns and restaurants: we like to eat vegetables and they think we only like chips or potatoes !

Remember always to look for the vegetables on the menu as normally not many vegetables are included (1 leaf of salad and 3 slices of tomatoes ?

Look on the menu for green beans, big beans or maruli salad (a sort of green salad)

For the Brits : it is not neaded to stick to eggs and chips there certainly are other things.

Other favourites are Gorgona, the Castro: best with car or on foor in early evening - excelent menu and in the daytime: Nico's tavern near the sea (just past Meltemi)

Here you can have a drin,k or eat a Greek salade or have an omelet .

Nico is always very friendly. (+- 30 years old)

Only a short time ago they serve a mezze for 2 including almost everything they have on the menu......

If anyone of you thinks of going there give our greetings to Nico and tell him we wish we were there.

On an other note, has anyone ever noticed the memorial plate across the road of Nicos' taverna ?

The plate is in Greek and has a rose bush in front of it, it seems it is in memory of a friend of Nico who died in a car accident.

The stone and memorial plate stand with their back to the sea so you have to look at it from the side of the road.

We actualy noticed this memorial sign when we stayed at the Lamon hotel and heard about the death of their son. (the plate has nothing to do with the son of the Lamon hotel)

On behalf of the Brits, I only eat Greek food in Greece, plus the occasional pizza or Spaghetti  Bolognaise. My prediction that most of the regulars to Plakias on this forum do likewise. We are more adventurous than you give us credit for.

Certainly everybody in our large crowd eat Greek food and my wife has no problems finding an adequate (large) supply of vegetables when we eat (Medousa). I agree that at holiday locations like Plakias, Brits seem to be as adventurous as anyone from any country. I don't think many of us can be compared with the crowd that inhabit the likes of Malia. Having said that, when we were in Malia about 9 years ago (accommodation allocated on arrival job) we found a Taverna in the old part of that town, the likes of which cannot be surpassed in Plakias. It was all Greek food and terrific. Gillian would almost go back to Malia for that reason alone !!!!!!

The family are still there and the rooms are still available, evidently the father ,or son, has more work with the building trade(excavators and trucks) so can't be bothered with the restaurant any more.

No GOI-MA is the one that shares a building next to the harbour....... Harakas has great food but a horrible view( everyone walking past at kneecap level as it is lower than the road !)

Thanks for the news 'bout the Secret Nest! We saw Mr. Papadakis driving through Sellia and past the old bridge near Kato Preveli with his Truck having huge rocks loaded. We wondered what he would cook with them...
That let us hope that fish will be served after crete has been finished...

Sorry to Mike G and John R, no offence was meant.

My remarks were just meant as an advice to some.
