Title: The Pelion - katigiorgis
Post by: Susan K on July 22, 2012, 10:23:20 AM
As much as we love Plakias, the situation at the far end has made us look at somewhere else this year. We got fed up with having to rush down to the beach in the morning just to get a bed. We always stayed at the Peligrimnos and we used to sit on the balcony and watch people drive up between 6.30 - 7.30am, go and put their towels on the bed, and drive off again. This is in September when it gets really busy. It isn't a holiday if every morning you have to rush down to the beach just to get a bed. So it's katigiorgis, in The Pelion for us this year. 2 small tavernas and a little mini market. Lovely apartment with magnificent views towards Skiathos.  Very quiet but no rushing around in the morning!

The far end should be OK in August.

Does katigiorgis have a nudist beach like the far in Plakias? Can you avoid the irritating tendency to "bags" a sun bed by putting towels out hours and hours before people intend to arrive?

Barny - we go in September which is the busiest month for the far end

Rogataber - the point is we don't want to have to do that, we want to be able to walk on to the beach and know we can find a bed, which just isn't possible unless you get there very early and put your towels down. I think we got spoilt last year when we went to the Maldives, and we had our own sunbeds on the beach outside our villa!

We always got our shade from the Tamarisk trees at the end of the Far End :). Hope you have a great time in Katigiorgis: sounds like you're guaranteed a relaxing time.

To stop the tumbleweed rolling through the Forum!

The situation on sun beds at the far end does not seem to have improved since we were last in Plakias in 2011, so if Santa reads this and has any influence with the current mayor, he might point out that people who are annual visitors are actively looking for alternative holiday destinations. In the present economic situation in Greece, surely everything to encourage visitors, especially regulars, should be top priority?

I agree with my namesake that someone in authority needs to rectify this situation asap.

It won't suit everyone, but could I suggest that for less than 1 day's rental of umbrella and loungers you can buy an umbrella and use it for your whole holiday to keep the sun off while lying on the sand. You can then go anywhere! The downside is that you need not to have a dodgy back and be aware that these portable umbrellas aren't as stable in the wind.

Just a thought!!

Its amazing comparing the difference between August and September at the far end. I will be going from 14th to 29th August and would not forsee any bed problems. Why September?

September is - as far as I know - much busier than August. Our accommodation has very few bookings July/August but is full in September.

We've never been in September, we normally go June/July but this year its going to be September, not really looking forward to it if we can't get a bed at the far end, any one know how busy the other beach round the corner is in  Sept?

John R is right as usual. In addition the popular tavernas are full by 8pm in my experience.

Personally I prefer the quiet in May. Unlike other places in Greece I go to, the Plakias high season does seem to be September. Odd!

Is it busy all through September ? or just early Sept?  I'm headed out there 25th - I hope it's not a hive of activity then. May was fine.

Last year it was busy right to the end of September but with a distinct dropoff at that point. Last year we went from 20 September until 04 October and yes perhaps the 2nd week (27th onwards) was a little quieter. Guests at our place (Stella) were complaining about the beach bed / towel situation. We are not beach people so that aspect did not concern us. Medousa Taverna filling up too early was our only potential "concern". One evening during our stay Medousa broke all time records for the number of diners served in any one evening and came very close again soon afterwards.

I was there approx. Sept 27-Oct 11 in 2010 and 2011 and it was extremely busy all through both fortnights.

When Fredi was working on the sunbeds he told me that September was "British month". He said two other months were German and Dutch, but I can't remember which.

we were in Rhodes in July, hardly any Germans, loads of eastern europeans, just like being at home.
