Where to go / Overnighter in Chania
« on: October 15, 2003, 09:04:36 PM »
We stayed in Plakias with First Choice this year and hired a car through them with Europcar, although probably more expensive than the local outlets even at 4 days for the price of 2 (196Euro's).

As part of the deal the rep Afroditi, who was an excellent rep by the way, said she could arrange a free overnight stop elsehere on the island if we wanted.

Consequently we had 2 days in the Chania area staying in an excellent First Choice appartment in Platanias just outside the main town.  The local rep said we could have stayed on for more nights but we had to get back.

By car from Plakias I would say Chania is about 1.5 hours.  The town itself is interesting particularly around the harbour and the old town back streets.

The beaches on the western side are fantastic, we particularly liked Falisarna.  The Akrotiri peninsula has a nice beach at the extreme end called Stavros.

For 2 weeks I would still prefer Plakias to the Chania resorts, which are very touristy, but it makes for a great diversion and change of scenery.

Where to eat...or not! / Where to eat?
« on: September 23, 2003, 07:30:32 PM »
We've just returned from 2 weeks from Plakias and to be honest we weren't that impressed by the food served up in most of the taverna's.

The first week we went tried some of those recommended  most by others and were disappointed.  Sorry to say this but Medousa and Sirocco served up the worst meals we've had in 13 years of Greek holidays.  The best meal in the first week was the Souvlaki bar next to Plakias Market!  Even the chemist had sold out of imodium.

The saving grace was we found Lyseos in the 2nd week and ate there from there on.

The food is like traditional home cooking.  The service was also excellent.  If you ask for oven potatoes she will usually oblige if you wanted an alternative to chips.
I can really recommend the stuffed chicken in vine leaves, stuffed pork, stifado and kleftiko.  To finish it off try the fresh strawberries and ice cream.

You don't get free raki or melon or anything else.  What you do get is excellent food.

10 out of 10 to Lyseos.  The others need to try harder.

P.S Can't comment on the fish as neither of us are great fish eaters.

Plakias / Mosquitos and Chemists
« on: July 20, 2003, 11:29:26 PM »
We will be in Pakias for 2 weeks from end August staying at the Costa Chrysoulla. Its now only 5 weeks and counting and the more I read on your website the more I can't wait.

It'll be our 2nd time in Crete as we stayed near Chania 2 years ago and really enjoyed it.

Only annoying part was that I had more mosquito bites than I have ever had in 15 years ofgoing to Greece.

Appreciate any comments and advice on how to avoid being bitten.  Also is there a chemist/pharmacy in Plakias?

Oh, and Jane wants to know if its really windy in Plakias.  I was browsing through a travel guide in WH Smiths (Rough Guide, Lonely Planet or something like that) and it said it was very windy.  She normally wears contact lenses but wouldn't if there was a lot of sand blowing around.

Thanks,

Martin & Jane
