Good to hear Dotty.
We'll be there on Tuesday afternoon - can't wait!
Which company was Gary with?
Hope the renovations aren't too extensive - staying there this year!
Full report on my return......

TIA

At the back end of last year there was a lot of talk about the MELTEMI
closing and a new ALIANTHOS hotel. Its all gone quiet, has anyone who has been this year anything to report? I was also told that new laws were coming in for 2004 requiring any hotels with swimming pools to have lifeguards, were any visible?

Hi there and welcome to our happy little gang

Meltemi should be open for this season I believe (See this post (http://forums.plakias.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=252))

Does of course mean I will have to have another farewell shindig there   Sigh... the things we have to do!

Hi everyone,
Gary was with First Choice John, There was no inconvienience to anyone only empty rooms being done (no worry over noise). Hair dryers, Electric kettles and Irons (all new, were teli's in before?) been added to rooms. Pack plenty protection everyone it looks like a good year.
It would appear as well as Beach bar they are building a lookout tower on the beach only the one I think, a lot of beach to watch for one don't you think?
Freddrick still doing far end beds. Doughnuts still as tasty as ever and Meltemi open. New Supermarket being built in front of Church.
Hope you all have as good a time as we did and you will remember us to everyone
Dotty & Gary

Glad you had a good time Dotty - One good thing about going later in the year is the anticipation throughout the summer, fuelled by reports and photos from those that have already gone. Must lose a few pounds before Sept to make room for the doughnuts

I hope the new beach bar doesn't play loud music, I enjoy the peace and quiet! Where is the lookout tower being built? Not sure about all these changes, sounds like they are gearing up for more tourists. Please leave our Plakias alone.

Hi everyone,
We are the Butt family, Mark, Sue, Rebecca and Aaron, hence the 'Butties'.
Went to Plakias back in July of 2001 and had a really good time at the Christos Chrysoula and on Crete in general (second visit to Crete, Ag. Gallini 2000).
2002 did Arillas on Corfu and 2003 Latsi, Cyprus and have to say neither were as good as Plakias / Crete. So guess what? We are going back to Plakias and the CC again this July.
Found this site a while ago, and made anonymous visits and have finally gotten around to registering.
Have to say slight concern about hearing of renovation work at CC's, but have paid now so not we can do! Any info on this much appreciated
Can anyone confirm if Plakias now has a hole-in-the-wall or not as I seem to be getting conflicting info on this?

Mark

Me again, I believe there are three "hole in the wall" at the very least two, one at the Alianthos and one at the Town Hall. Don't worry about C/C as I said they are only doing the empty rooms in fact it is the Block on the left as you go down to pool and reception (you will know where I mean John) sorry if I gave anyone worries I promise you there is no need.
The Beach bar is built on a long trailer "only way allowed on beach" I don't think they will have music definitely hope not I prefer peace and quiet too. it is built opposite the long time partly built building on the way to the far end, the "Watch Tower" just before it. Just a little bit worried myself about changes much prefer how it was.  Dotty

The beach bar will draw the textiles towards the end of the beach
This will possibly squash the far-enders into a smaller space

We have just returned from Plakias after a 2 week stay.
This was our 1st stay in Plakias but hopefully not our last. We stayed at the "Apollo" - very quite - ideal for us as that's what we like.
We experienced our first "sandfall". Woke on thurs 6th to find the whole island completely covered in a thick layer of sand. What a mess. Apparently it comes from the Sahara Desert under certain weather conditions.
On the whole the weather was pretty good but we were driven from the beach a few times by cold winds.
We visited  Plakias a few years ago on a day trip and it was still pretty much as we remembered it. Not much sign of any major building work going on but while we were there 12 new beach umbrellas/sunbeds were installed along with a changing booth on the beach, also some new street lights are going in along the promenade.
Our best holiday on Crete so far, can't wait to go back

having visited Plakias in May, i can confirm that the NEW beach bar is in the textile area of the beach, not in the nudist area and it looks pretty permanent to me ( i saw no signs of it being on a trailer) but it's not that bad, there is music but i could hardly hear it from the road. it reminds me of the beach bar at paleohora.

I had a look at it too - then bumped into Manolis that runs it one evening in Ostraco.
It is a trailer (that overcomes some planning laws!) but they've built some sort of screening around the wheels.
I thought it looked good, and certainly didn't do anything to detract from the beach at all - in fact, it's another useful place to stop off and get a drink on the way back from the beach.
As they are taking care to keep the area around it looking nice, to me it adds to the place!

Oh so it is a trailer then!

I agree that it's an improvement, we usually stop off at the pelegramnos for a beer before the arduous walk back into town lol

Ostraco, I see your last visit to plakias was in May 2005, any chance I could i borrow your time machine?

We have been looking for some info on the beachbar, and could not find any info on it. Suddenly this topic was seen when looking at "last click".

Hi Harribobs,

Indeed the last 60 days are showed by default. For older posts we have to use the search engine.

We were told it s now there for the second year and in our opinion not a trailer.
It is runned by Manolis in the evening and by his Czech girlfriend during the daytime. Great fresh orange juice!

i think there is a misunderstanding here,

i wish i could speak more dutch/flemish, my friends in belgium had wonderful fun trying to make me pronounce some words :'(
