Plakias / Back on the Forum - and to Plakias
« on: July 09, 2007, 03:36:04 PM »
I am now back on this Forum after quite a long absence caused by a virus problem . Every time i trtied to access by my normal route - the google search engine and then the first site headed Welcome to Plakias - I got a warning that the site contained a virus - so immediately logged off and did a virus check . I have recdently found another route - using a header called Plaias Forums powered by Invision Power Board - where there is no such problem
Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there an explanation or solution ?
I have just booked to stay in the Kostas Chryssoula arriving n the early hours of Wednesday 22 August and returbing in the early hours of Wednesday 5 September . It would be nice to meet up with any forum friends - I see that both George and Peter and Dawn who i have met before will be there - and my normal patter is days on the beach sometimes at the far end but more often Mikro Amoudhi , early eveings in the Livicon , and then dinner at the Lysseos . Probably easiuest to find in the Livicon

Where to eat...or not! / Lysseos
« on: August 02, 2006, 06:45:04 PM »
Could anyone who has been to Plakias recently and , like me , regards the Lysseos  as a really good restaurant , help to whet my appetite . Is the food there as good as ever ? Any notgable additions to the menu or just the usual excellent dishes - the roasts , lamb in the oven , pork afelia , chicken skordata , duck a l'orange , and above all , kleftiko - by far the best kleftiko i have had because it is the Cypriot  version and not the Greek one = the chef is a Cypriot
Three weeks tonight and I will be sampling  my first meal there = and be spoilt for choice

Holiday Companies / Olympic Holidays
« on: August 01, 2006, 01:11:55 PM »
In skim reading some contributions on the conference , I am horrified to hear some stories about Olympic - a company I have had problems with before - which stem from the lack of a rep in Plakias , including people arriving in the middle of the night , as I shall , and not being able to find their room with no one to refer to . Can someone reassure me that it is not that bad - and what to do if I cannot find my room !

Plakias / I am back
« on: July 31, 2006, 03:14:40 PM »
I am back using this Forum after an absence of nearly a year = though I have sometimes lurked - for personal reasons which one or two of you may be aware of . And i am about to book to go back to Plakias from 22 August to 5 September .
I cannot book with Kosmar as they do not accept bookings from singles - which I now unambiguously am !! - so I cannot go back tot he Lamon which I liked last  year and so it has to be Olympic - depsite having had a row with them in 2001 over noisy accomodation in Skiathos which I got compensation for after taking them to ABTA - and the Costas Chryssoulas which is ok but no more than that
It would be nice to hear from any old Forum friends including George who I met at the Livicon last year or Susan K who sent me some super messages when I was down , or new Forum friends especially anyone there the same time
I have tried posting up my stay on the calendar but while it appears under future events, it does not appear on the calendar itself and I note that is also the case for some opther similar postings. is this as a result of the recent hacker ?
Looking forward to a few beers at the Livicon , good meals at the Lysseos , long days mainly on Mikros Amoudhi but when I am too lazy to get there , the Far End , and of course some doughnuts !

Plakias / Places or people ?
« on: August 15, 2005, 01:32:58 PM »
Last year I was due to go to Plakias with my then new partner , Penny , but we had to cancel a week beforehand because she could not fly on medical advice . She wanted me to go alone but I refused because , as I said on a posting on this site at the time , people are more important than places and much as I love Plakias , I loved her much more and wanted to go on holiday with her . Instead we went to the Highlands , had a lovely time - or so I thought but recently she has cast doubt on that by complaining about things on that holiday - and got engaged. However it has not been an easy relationship with several break ups - including on boxing day when she threw me out of her house with no transport - and she has caused a lot of problems by phone calls to friends , work colleagues including my line manager, estranged family members , and exes. But we have tried to move forward and decided to have our postpned holiday in plakias as we said at the time of cancellation that we would .However the weekend before last ,little more than two weeks before we were due to go to plakias , after another difficult time = caused in part by friction over her looking  to buy a house for us to live together in an area which would have involved about five hours a day travelling to and from work for me - she said we were through - and really there is a limit to the number of break ups a relationship can survive . She has refused to pay for her share of the holiday cost though she is considerably better off than me and has recently bought a car for about £40 000, and she has refused to return the engagement ring which was not cheap .And my passport has mysteriously gone missing which involves me in considerable additional cost and inconvenience in getting a replacement and it is touch and go whether I will get it in time
But I have decided to go to plakias anyway as I need a holiday and I love the place but it will be very difficult as I will have a lot of time to think about things and we had talked so much about the place - she has never been there .
So I think that I now feel that perhaps places are more important than people as you can rely on places not to change their mind or act in a volatile way etc but you cant rely on people !
If by any chance anyone would like to take her place on the holiday - flying from birmingham on 23 august for two weeks - and is able to do so at this notice ,please e mail me - rather than posting a message here -but asap and certainly before friday as this is a work e mail address , preferably giving a phone number so we can discuss the possibilitiy and make arrangements if appropriate
Meantime I imagine that I shall be supping more beers at the Livicon than would otherwise have been the case !

Plakias / train timetable
« on: June 20, 2005, 05:14:42 PM »
Can anyone who has been to plakias recently provide any information on the train timetable this year ? In particular what are the times between plakias and damnoni ? I am also interested in whether  there is still a trip to myrrthios every evening , whether there are sometimes trains to sudha beach , and when and where the longer distance day excursions go
A full timetable would be great but any info very useful
And if no one has this information can someone going in the near future provide it
Many thanks

Forum and Website discussion / correcting the calendar
« on: June 01, 2005, 11:42:24 AM »
Can anyone advise on how to correct a posting on the calendar - oor alternatively can one of the administrators correct it for me
The calendar says that I - and Penny - will be in town from 23 august to 10 September . However in fact our last day will be 5 september . Much as we would love an extra four days holiday we would miss the flight back ! And esp as the period from 6 sept onwards has a lot of entries , it would be sensible to delete the incorrect ones
Can anyone help please

Plakias / Postponed holiday
« on: June 01, 2005, 11:20:14 AM »
I did not get to Plakias last year. I had booked to go with my new partner ,Penny , but a week before we were due to go , she was advised by her doctor not to fly due to high bllod pressure - so instead we had a terrific holiday in the Highlands though not quite as hot ! But we always said that we had not cancelled the holiday but rather postponed it until this year .She is now fit to fly and at the weekend we booked to go on 23 august , with Kosmar , staying at the Lamon . We got the last room there . So nearer the time I will be trying to find some of the very helpful postings last year with ideas on car trips = we plan to hire a car for probably three days and as I do not drive , I do not know the off the beaten track roads - and restaurants which are good for vegetarians .But I might need help either in tracking these down or in any new ideas - or both . Is anyone else going to be there between 23 august and 6 september ? On the calendar there is no one else in the first week but in the second week Mary and Nick , and George ,are down - but I know that lots of people do not put themselves down on the calendar
I am really looking forward to showing Penny around Plakias including the Livicon , the Lysseos , and the beach bar at Damnoni

Plakias / No Plakias this year
« on: August 04, 2004, 01:19:57 PM »
Yesterday . I often thought of where I would be that time next week as we were due to fly out next tuesday . But when I got home I had a phone call from my new partner which changed everything . She had been to her doctor yesterday afternoon and has been diagnosed as having extremely high blood pressure .She is on medication and has been advised strongly not to fly in such circs - advice which I felt bound to re-enforce . She wanted me to go by myself to Plakias which I have often done previously but we had both been so looking forward to a holiday together that I would not even comtemplate that .We discussed and explored other options and iwll now be staying in the house of friends of mine in the highlands whilst they are in france .Not so hot as Plakias and no beaches but stil tremendous scenery - and much as I like the Livicon , I will be able to drink much better beer ! So in about an hour or so , I lost one holiday but gained another. We are already talking about going to Plakias next year but it is perhaps temtping fate to assume that the relationship will still be strong then but I hope so
I will miss Plakias greatly but people are more important than places and I am sure I have made the right decision
I must make sure to keep some of the great ideas on day trips from Plakias - esp those from John R - as they will be very useful next year
Anyone live in the highlands and might want to meet up for a drink and a chat about Plakias ?

Where to go / Advice on day trips
« on: July 26, 2004, 03:19:54 PM »
My travelling outside Plakias and damnoni has previously been restricted to a few excursions - chania and rethymonon , heraklion and knossos- a coupleof train trips including one over the mountains, and abus journey again over the mountains to Sfakion . This year though I will be with a new partner who can drive and we plan to hire a car ,probably for about three days which seems to be the standard deal .My initial thoughts on possible excursions are
1 defintely the trip west over the mountains towards and poss as far as Sfakion . I dont think you can get any further west than there though? Any places worth going to in that direction ?
2 Hania definitely worth a visit though I fear the natural inclinations of the fmale species to shopaholism will kick in ! But she is the driver and I know she will love Hania for all sorts of reasons , as I do . Not sure though whether there is any where else near there worth visitiing - poss Kournas Lake on the way back and /or Georgopoulos
3. If poss  Paleochora which has always seemed interesting to me as a poss place to stay but not until and unless I can try it out .But that mioght be too far ? And I think you have to go north and back south again which of course would extend the journey time
Any advice would be much appreciated .And any other ideas - esp inland .and in the mountains
Another thought is evenings out - we will not want to go very far but where are there good restaurants in nearby villages .Myrrthios of course - though we will probably go there at least once on the train .Are there good restaurants in Sellia ? and anywhere else near - Lefkoia . I wondered about Spilli but that might be a bit too far for an evening so instead a pit stop on the way back from somewhere ?

Plakias / Festival of Assumption /Panagia
« on: July 26, 2004, 03:04:26 PM »
The Festival of the Assumption or Panagia - on 15th august - falls on a sunday this year .Does anyone know the implications of this - ie will the monday be a public holiday like when Xmas day falls on a sunday and if so ,will this mean a lot more Greek tourists around and /or some shops closed in the towns?Presumably any festivities would still be on the 15th ?

Plakias / Soudha beach
« on: July 12, 2004, 12:57:42 PM »
I have noticed in an old posting by Susan K a comment that if the new beach bar encroached too much on the naturist area at the far end of Plakias by attracting more textiles to that part of the beach - a fear subsequently and thankfully that is not valid - then she would decamp to Soudha beach , with the inference that Soudha beach is fine for naturism .that is not my experience for many years though it may be significant that I always go to Plakias in august and so more poeple around may mean less scope for naturist . My experience has been very few people baring all at soudha beach and many textiles constantly walking along the beach
I would though be interested to hear the experience of other people
But it would take a lot to draw me away from the 90% naturist beach around the headland at Damnoni , especially now the train goes to and from damnoni and there is an easy walk around the headland

Plakias / car hire
« on: June 28, 2004, 11:30:39 AM »
When I booked yesterday with First choice ,I was offered discounted car hire of £52 for three days - normally £65 .Can anyone advise how this compares with prices in Plakias? I am inclined to wait until we get there - more flexibility on choice of exact days etc .
Also which days of the week are firstly the trip to Hania and secondly the Greek evening - and is this still in Soudha Bay

Where to eat...or not! / Vegetarian food
« on: June 28, 2004, 11:26:00 AM »
I am going to Plakias - from 10 to 24 august with a new partner who is a vegetarian - and that includes no fish . I am  a carnivore and a Plakias veteran so have long established my favourite restaurants - first and foremost the Lysseos but the occasional visits to HArakis , Chrystos , and the one everyone likes in Myrtios . It will probably be possibleto get vegetarian meals in any of those but the choice could be  very limited .I would therefore welcome any advice on the best places for vegetarian food , esp if any of the above are good , which will still allow me to enjoy the best carnivorous meals

Forum and Website discussion / time setting
« on: November 05, 2003, 03:19:45 PM »
i have just noticed from a message i have posted that this site is still operating in British Summer Time . Perhaps we should keep it like that all year round so we can all dream that it is summer . Alternatively one of the controllers might want to change the setting to the grim reality of winter time
