PlakChat / Plakias Map
« on: April 06, 2015, 03:42:57 PM »
For my sins it has been a while since I visited the forum so apologies for not keeping up to date.

I wanted to check a few things out so clicked on the useful links and went to the Plakias map link.  It is unfortunately not working any more.  I wondered if anyone else had noticed and, secondly, would it be feasible to get it working again as there must have been a lot of hard work put into it in the first place and it being there must be very useful to new and returning visitors alike?

I'm using Windows 7 by the way.

PlakChat / Malaria in Greece
« on: October 23, 2012, 08:30:50 AM »
Just stumbled across this article going back to 2011 which is reporting that after an absence of more than 30 years malaria is being seen in Greece again.  The cases (over 50) all are in the mainland but it is a cautionary tale in terms of protecting yourself against the pesky mozzie wherever you are.

Better safe than sorry eh!  The piece comes from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and is here for you to read in full http://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/activities/sciadvice/Lists/ECDC%20Reviews/ECDC_DispForm.aspx?List=512ff74f-77d4-4ad8-b6d6-bf0f23083f30&ID=1197.

Mind you I must say that I didn't see any signs of mozzies in Plakias in September but the didn't stop me spraying before going out and running to mozzie machine at night because the little b-----s love me.

PlakChat / Current £ / Euro Exchange Rates in Plakias
« on: July 25, 2012, 07:21:48 PM »
I usually take Sterling to Greece and change it for Euros when we get there.  Can someone advise me where is best to do this in Plakias and what the current (25 July or thereabouts) rate is so I can make a direct comparison with current UK rates.  I do it on the islands as I usually get a much better rate than from the robbers (Thos Cook & Co) in the UK who are rip off merchants.

Thanks in anticipation.  See you soon!

Where to eat...or not! / Traditional Greek Tavernas
« on: July 01, 2012, 06:08:55 PM »
We will be visiting Plakias for the first time at the beginning of September although we have been going to the Islands for over 30 years. I have read most of the reviews about the eating options by fellow travelers on this forum but so far haven't found the info I'm looking for. Maybe someone can help me. By the way we won't have a car and don't fancy tramping up and down hills in an evening to get to/from a taverna.

Now the question. Are there any traditional tavernas in Plakias, ie where the food has been slow cooked during the day and is 'on show' in the evening in a traditional 'salmonella cabinet' (it's an old fashioned term I grew up with when first visiting the islands as that was about all there was then, ie before tavernas got posh and started calling themselves restaurants) where after choosing your starter from the cabinet or sometimes even a menu you go into the innards of the establishment and point at what you want?

Haven't seen any mention of this in the posts I've read so far so I'm assuming, probably quite wrongly, your choices are all off the menu 'unseen'.

Am I right or just loosing faith in my old age.
