Where to stay / New Hotel??????

When we were over early July, workers were finishing off a new hotel, has anybody seen it recently?

It was massive for Plakias - it is situated off the main road sea on your left hand side - turn right at the Forum heading for the Anna appartments.

We saw a great improvements everyday- as if they had some sort of timescale, I was a bit suprised at this.

Yes - finished now - We've just got back. It is massive but thankfully at the back of the village. Very unpopular with the locals we spoke to. They say it is aimed almost exclusively at the Czech market.

The place was ful of Czechs over the last two weeks. Nice people but the locals say that they don't spend in the village beyond paying for this accommodation. I can't comment on that but on our last night (Tuesday), Livicon was full of them (spending a bit as well). Marcos of Stella Pension said the last 2 weeks was the busiest of the whole season for Plakias - not for Stella Pension though - more of that later elsewhere. It was certainly more busy thatn I've ever seen it during this period over the last 7 years.

Good picture John - brought back some great memories - I suppose the good thing about the Hotel is that the Livicon is getting some more business. I can see Dennis rubbing his hands and getting his Czech joke book out.

We spent a lot of time in the Livicon this year as we know Dennis and Gorgea from way back. Did you know Dennis used to be a policeman in the early ninties until his gun went off in it's holster - I've got some great photos of the Taxi mafia outside the Livicon - were they still hanging around waiting for business when you were there?

We are so glad that the Anna apts have been given great reviews - now just 2 sleeps wakefosill - wont be biking or driving - last year the drive up from Gouves (nothern crete) was a white knucle thing - the best bit was diving thro the gorge heading back to plakias and guess what - it was windy!  Rodger - will give my regards to Phil Silvers and try in my best greek to make him smile for the first time in 20 years (kinda goes like this - teekannis seemera karafala - how ye doin baldy) No (Ochee) wont say it will just think it! We are going for travellers cheques because we want to go cash them at the Livicon or Aliathos, we think it will be better than the hole in the wall. One small problem though  - what are the chances of using someones pool (in 1986 we accidently broke the diving board at the Alianthos -greeks NEVER forget a face) so if anyone knows a nice pool away from the wind please let us know ............. In the 80's/90's (man I'm old) we used to call the gyros resturant the soovie shop I will be spending a lot of time there I think - anyway thanks for all the advice comments etc - if my darling wife Anna allows I may become a far ender this year and get a photo with the doughnut man just like dutch Joe!!!!!!!

Where to stay / Anna Apartments
« on: June 23, 2005, 02:49:02 PM »
Have just received an email from Anna confirming our Studio booking for 14 nights starting July 5th

She informs me its Studio 7 - has anyone stayed in No.7? If so can you tell me what its like regarding size, veiws, balcony etc. I remember Ploppy posting a few pictures of the Anna Apts a few weeks ago so Paul if you have No.7 on film we would love to see it. (If it's tiny with no veiws etc - don't want to know - deal with that when we arrive).

What's best method for cashing money - 10 years ago we cashed travellers cheques at the Livicon (the guy looked like Phil Silvers - and still does - saw him last year when we were through for a few days), are credit cards or switch card a better option.

Ah well 12 sleeps and we'll there

Hi all

TV was terrible last night so we watched some plakias video from the 90's
- ok not been there (apart from a couple of days July last year) for 10 years.
Interested to know if anyone remembers Julias (past the harbour turn right past the laundrette and up the hill - it sat back off the road overlooking the bay) we used to go there for lunch sometimes.

It was owned and run by a big english guy (tall nicotine stained beard just can't remember his name) he was a bit of a blether (chatty in english) but really nice to us, the service was very slow {think he thought he was greek} but the food was good even though we were served individually.

When we were there last year we took a walk up the far end as compage calls it - to our suprise it was all closed up (shame).

Just want to know if anyone remembers the place and the big english gentleman. We talked sometimes - after drinking his mullberry raki (in the afternoon) he said he would retire to Plakias. I would like to look him up if he has, in July - so if anybody knows please let me know.

Kalispera o filios (well its after 2pm as I post)

I could spend a month eating at the souvalaki house, thats probably cheaper than cooking your self..................)

Where exactly is that? I remember some years ago there was a (very) small establishment selling gyros pitta on the seafront. Run by a lady I think. No Greek holiday is complete without 2 or 3 gyros pitta meals, washed down with retsina.

Compage just saw your picture PlakiasSouvlaki 030911-856. Can you tell me if the Anna Appartments are at the end of the road beside the gyros resturant

If you draw a line between the numbers 8 and 13 on [a href=\"http://www.compage.com/plakiasproperties.jpg]this map, Anna's is half way along the line.

So, yes, you could go down that road to get to it or you could go down the road past the doctor/pharmacy (D on the map) and then turn left.

Compage - thanks for the map directions etc - you settled an argument in our house!

hi michael
i go to crete every july and it would be a lie to say it was anything other than very hot  .  there is however a very strong wind to cool things down abit.  most people new to plakias complain about the wind  .... until it goes and they are very quick to want it back.  the locals say that the wind comes for 3days and goes away for 3days and i think thats about as accurate as it gets.
have a great time in july

Plakias / Plakias in the 80s

Hello all,

I am new to the forum, but not Plakias!  I thought I would drop a line or two and gather some info re Plakia and intoduce myself a little bit.

I first arrived in Plakias in 1983..Myself and my friend Ian walked there from Rethymnon!....we then walked to Agia Galii via Spili, then got lost and ended up in Lasithi!

I last visited Plakias in 2002 as you may gather things had changed dramatically, however, it still had that dramatic beauty and lovely feeling of isolation, added to that most of the Cretans in Plakias come from Sphakian origins and they are renowned for their, shall we say indomitable spirit!

I remember the Youth Hostel being in Mirthios and there was little else but a couple of tavernas in Plakias, however, I did meet my first Greek Scorpion there - sleeping snugly in my boot.

Anyone else who remembers that Idyllic era please share your memories with me.
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=2684\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

Hey was nobody there in the eighties!

Daskaloyannis

My first visit to Plakias was in 1986 - there was a crowd of us in Malia on a booze fuelled holiday - two of the guys said they had some friends in Mirthios / Plakias so we all thought yeah lets go see some of old crete.

So unlike yourself we jumped on a bus or was it two and arrived in Mirthios a good few hours later. On the way it was deciced we would stay at the youth hostile in Mirthios - some of the guys had stayed there before and said it was OK - the rest of us were a bit apprehensive but hey it was a team holiday (all for one and one for all and all that). The first thing I remember is the stunning view of Plakias from Mirthios the second was the room we all had to share in the hostile basic or what! A cat in the corner having kittens no wardrobes no sheets no en suite what a shock!

Once we were settled it was time to meet Georgio or Big Geordy as we called him.
It was his Taverna below the hostile(its now a gift shop) he was really good to us and his mother did all the cooking so we ate really well and it was very cheap, but that was in the days of the dracma.

In order to get to Plakias we had to go down the donkey trail (try that after a few Amstels) where we meet Georgios brother Mannosous - he also owned his own Taverna in Plakis - that first year we had some great nights in Plakias and Mirthios all fairly young free and single. I dont have any recollection of getting back up the donkey trail but always woke up in the hostile or just outside or sometimes on the roof!

My wife and I have been to Plakias on several occasions with pals from 1986,  mainly in the1990's, all those holidays spent with Mannousos and his wife Tina and all their family, they always made us welcome with their unique greek hospitality.

We went back for a few days in July this year - first time in ten years - it was great to be back - so much so we are making plans for 2005

hi yannis

do i remember the crazy dolphin - i practically lived in the place.  I am always in touch with manousos and tina, i refer to them as my greek mum and dad  manousos is in the middle of changing the dolphin into to 2 huge apartments. the first one is complete & the second one is getting there.  Tina works in the happy mart at danmoni and manousos still drives the school bus.  both are fine and still living above the dolphin.
i am also heading back in july 2005 and there are quite a few air con apartments available, but they will charge you extra for it but in july it can be worth it.
the alianthos & kosta chrysoullas definetly have it of the top of my head, and i am sure loads others too.
maybe see ya in july

Sheryl

When we were in plakias in July this year the first thing we did was to go see the crazy dolphin we were a bit shocked to see that it was being refurbished I knew manousos and tina lived above but thought they had moved on.
We had gone for three weeks (1993 I think) and most lunchtimes were spent in manousos and tinas living room - tina coming home from her work to cook lunch in her pressure cooker,  tidy up then go back to work as we slept all afternoon in
in the sunshine.

We have had some great holidays in plakias in the early 90's with M n T and have some great videos of our times together especially visits to tinas mum n dads at Frati. Manousos also took us to the village where he was born - Kalikratus (excuse the spelling) about 2 - 1/2 hours drive way up in the moutains IN THE BACK OF A PICK UP TRUCK oh happy days !

Its so good to here from someone who knows M n T, I could go on for ages but I am at work (but at least its friday). Do me a favour next time you contact M n T will you mention that John and Anna are planning a visit in July 05 or you could say that watermelon head (karposokefalos) as he used to call me - would love to meet and catch up.

Hi all first post so here goes

Making plans to return in July 2005 after a few days visit in July 2004. Stayed in Gooves last year and decided to hire a car and revisit Plakias - after a white knuckle ride in my bright red seat hire car  we arrived back in Plakias. Great to see after ten years, not too many changes (I expected more) but felt really good to be back.

Has anyone stayed at the Alianthos as it looked to be upgraded or has anyone got any other suggestions. (air con a must too old for the hostles)

Does anyone remember the Crazy Dolphin Taverna next to the Alianthos

Great site
